Maybe I'm just biased. CoP's script just reads like a terrible anime, complete with inane pseudo-philosophy. There are decent concepts and world-building in there, as TM and Armando pointed out, but that doesn't really excuse the poor presentation.
It really gets under my skin how people sing CoP's praises as though it were some unparalleled tale, but when I've gone through it I've been face-palming and head-desking through just about every cutscene. Characters babble at length without saying anything and there's stuff that just isn't explained clearly. For example: I still don't know who or what the Keeper of the Apocalypse is. I suspect it refers to Promathia, but it was never clearly confirmed and they go back and forth about who bears that title more than a few times, compounding the issue.

I'm sure part of it was just the satisfaction of getting CoP done way back in the day. Maybe it was a way to rationalize having gotten it done. Oh gawd! That fight was hard. We had to try it 5 times. But hey! We won! And this cutscene is awesome. We get a new town that we can't use the AH for yet or even the OP! But at least the cutscene was awesome!

Personally, I'm still completely lost about who this Louverance-generic-Elvaan-in-generic-low-level-gear character is and how he fits into the story.

Speaking of anime, I was just in the Anime subforum and you were talking about your hate for Neon Genesis Evangelion. I guess that's what you're talking about here. It's funny cause I just rewatched the entire Eva series and think it has held up well over the years. It's ambitious. At least, compared to most of the Mary Shounen Sue anime out there there that really don't aspire to anything at all.

It's funny cause I just rewatched the entire Eva series and think it has held up well over the years. It's ambitious. At least, compared to most of the Mary Shounen Sue anime out there there that really don't aspire to anything at all.

I wasn't thinking of Eva actually, but more the generic dregs that are cranked out each season. It's the same vibe I remember getting from things like Heroic Age. It looks ok on the surface but then it tries to pass itself off as meaningful when it's really quite shallow and/or underdeveloped.

Eva is distinct, I'll give it that but I don't agree that it held up very well. I still believe a lot of that has to do with the fact that I didn't watch it until college, whereas most of the folks who defend it so fiercely encountered it when they were young and impressionable.

If you want examples of series that have held up well over the years I'd point you to both Cowboy Bebop and Slayers.

If you want an example of a series that's good but hasn't held up so well, I'd point to Trigun. I loved what I managed to see of Trigun when I was younger, but when I finally sat down and watched the whole thing earlier this year I found it slightly lacking compared to how I remembered it and how much hype it got. It still stands head and shoulders above the majority of what's out there, but it wasn't quite the masterpiece I once hoped it was.

I'll give you that, when you're young, you watch Evangelion thinking: "OMG, ROBOTS, AND BIBLICAL REFERENCES, AND BOOBIES!" ...generally.

I personally just enjoyed it in my recent viewing when I realize that all the religious text is really just decoration and didn't actually have all that much to do with the story being told. Like in a way, calling the giants "Evangelions" is no more meaningful than naming the biggest planet "Jupiter."

That makes me think about a series that I used to think I liked, Hunter X Hunter. I used to think it was cool and deep, for a shonen series. At some point, I just ended up throwing my hands in the air saying that it's all a bunch of pointlessly complicated bullshit and dialogue.

Got a new linkshell I can run with to do Voidwatch. Did a few Voidwroughts tonight and a Jeuno gnat thing. Yay! I got a Strendu Ri...owait, I had that already. Shucks.

In other news, Cloudsplitter might be weak...

...but at least it's pretty!

Finished Yacumama 6/6 this morning. Only 14 more VNMs and then it's time for me to spam Carabosse and CC.

I'm still not sure how it happened. I finished Kannagi and I told myself "No... no more... never again... to hell with Empy Weapons" and now here I am on the final legs of my second one. WTF is wrong with me?
