Not that bright eh? If you for example change your Face 3-B model, other's characters with that face would have it too. So still won't solve the problem.. but yea, it's a way to stylize.. you and your "twins."
I think the simplest thing they could do to fix this whole 'I wanna look unique' problem is split up the hair and face .dats. Basically what I'm saying is if you were to make a new character you would be able to choose from one of the eight different faces available and then you would be able to choose one of the eight different hairstyles to go with it. With that simple (or at least it seems simple on the outside, I don't know how much coding would be needed) change, you would open up a lareg vararity of unique facial combinations.
Just think of it, the asian hume looking face with the tatoos from the bald hume or the smirky, young looking elvaan with the long white hair from the sephiroth wannabe elvaan. The possibilities are staggering! Add in the two different hair color option we have now and that just gives you more freedom and customization. They could even add a temperary NPC who can change the face/hair of existing players who decide they want a change.
Now will this ever happen? Nope, no way in hell. But it's still a nice idea =/

All nice ideas, but the PS2's Video RAM would not be possible to support any of these ideas. The more combinations you make the more that gets crammed into the Video RAM to handle. Having the like 7-8 slots for equipment already creates a huge number that's pushing PS2 to a limit.
Effects of so many gear combinations you can already see the PS2 struggling with when you go to Jeuno, and with as many people there that's still only a fraction of combinations that the PS2 would have to deal with. Start making the Head, Body, Hands, Legs, Feet, Main, and Sub object work outside of the current design you are just asking for major trouble with the PS2.
As it is right now if you haven't noticed the game keeps the character models in those 7 specifics. For exception of the Head the Body, Hands, Legs, Feet, Main, and Sub are the exact same model for each race and gender with Tarutaru sharing that model for Male and Female gender.
Now if you try to make the options Head and Hair you are separating the model even further. For the PS2 really it's doable but the combinations now start growing so exponentially that the PS2 already apperant limit starts to become even worse, and probably more quickly then SE is planning would max out what the PS2 can do.
As you may also of noticed equipment releases have steadily declined, with each equipment it's more for the PS2 Video RAM that it can't handle. As you also notice though the Stories seem to be unlimited on how many they can place, that is because to that respect they are not limited by the PS2's Video RAM. In that one respect the game is able to advance far further then anything else.
You might think what's wrong if the PS2 Video RAM takes slower to load the models, it is actually a big problem for the PS2 since it is quite apparent that the character movements relies of the Video RAM and the GPUs. If SE packs those to full the PS2 characters movement speeds will drop, it's a reverse of the speed issues that some video cards in the PC cause.
It would be really sweet though if SE were to recycle the code and bring it in as a true PS3 type. Problem is SE already stated they wanted to keep the code simple and not version it out, so the games platform limit is restricted by which platforms are able to work without changing the code. Only difference with the code would usually be it's compiling process.
So to that the question ends up how well is FFXI designed? Is it designed well enough that the code it has now is able to be converted to a vector program by just using a good recompiling program or would a lot of work need to be done to it? In either case though even if it doesn't convert over to a PS3 version it'll still be able to expand further on a PS3 emulating a PS2 due to better graphic cards and such it's working with.
So even if doesn't become a full PS3 version just being able to be used via a PS2 emulator on the PS3 would seem to benefit it enough to still carry out some ideas here.
