  • Unanswered merit question

I read this merit point guide - http://www.koolaid-ffxi.org/linkshel...e/Merit+Points

but it didn't answer one question: If I level a job to 75, improve a particular ability with merit points, then use that job as a subjob will the merit improvements still be there?

For example, if I'm drk/war, and level war to 75, improve an ability, then continue using war as a subjob will the ability remain improved?

It depends on the ability. Some abilities only work on that one job and only when that job is lvl 75. Also, even the ones that work for multiple jobs don't kick in until atleast lvl 30, maybe 37.
I don't think war even has to be a subjob for many of the merits. If you merit a skill (like weapons or combat skills like evasion) then it will kick in whenever you hit the lvl minimum with whatever job (subjob doesn't matter here from what I understand).

job specific merits only work when that job is 75.
status merits will work with every job/level you use.

Status merits start at lvl 1? Wow, don't know where I got that you had to be atleast 30.

Actually I'm not sure about that part. I never really pay much attension to my status at low level :O

            Re: Unanswered merit question

it's actually lvl 10 when the first merit kicks in at low lvl's.

for instance, if u have a merit in total of +70 HP (10 * 7), and u start a job from lvl 1, for 1-9 u won't get any merit bonuses. at lvl 10, u get +10 in ur HP, and after that, u get another 10 for every 10 lvl's until lvl 50. next lvl u get the increased merit bonus is 55, and after that it changes to every 5 lvl's. in this example, the 7th phase kicks in at lvl 60, so after that, the amount of increased HP stays. but if u add another 10 later on, then it'll kick in at 65.

what ur subjob is at that time doesn't matter at all. for example, if u have a WAR 75 and u have +2 (1 phase) in ur Axe skill, and switch to BRD 10 w/ WHM sub, u'll still see the Axe skill of 2 in ur skill list. likewise, Enmity, Status bonuses, or every other merits, w/ the exception of job-specific ones, do kick in no matter whatever job u set to main/sub.

like Jei pointed out, however, job-specific merits (such as DRK's Last Resort enhancemenet) only work when the job is 75, and when it's set to the main job. just because that job is 75, that doesn't mean it works when it's set to sub. Last Resort used as sub will only have the same affect as when it's used without merits.

What about in lvl restricted areas such as BCNM's and some cop areas? Say my bst is 75 (which it isnt yet) and I have reduced call pet timer. Do you lose that in lvl capped areas?

never personally checked, but in theory, it shouldn't work in lvl restricted areas. in such places u r treated as whatever the restricted lvl is, and it's officially said that the job-specific merits only work when it's set to main and is 75.

note that non-job-specific merits still work as per the rules i've posted above, so for instance if u have at least +2 (1 phase) to ur H2H skills, u'd be able to use Raging Fists as MNK in lvl 40-restricted areas. (it's skill 125 so usually 41 and up.)

Don't you have to have some sort of skill in whatever skill you're lvling? For instance a lvl 75 war couldn't merit katanas?

yeah, that's correct. but once raised w/ merits, weapon skill lvl shows up in the list even if u change to the job which doesn't have that skill at all, like i mentioned above, and is usable. for example, if u have +10 in ur H2H, and switch to, say, WHM/BRD, u can still use Combo w/ ur bare fists, provided that ur WHM is at least lvl 50 as +10 means 5 phases and require u to be lvl 50 in order for all of them to kick in.

btw, katana currently is the only category of weapons that only 1 job can use; NIN. every other weapons has at least 2 jobs that have skills in them, although whether they can use them effectively is a different question.

You keep them in BCNM and Capped areas.

What a very useful post. I am currently maxing out my summoner in merits. So far i need 4 points for my next avatar damage and ill go on my second mp bonus. Is there a limit on how much I CAN upgrade?
