I use a gamepad now, but before I did I used the keyboard exclusively.
I have to say, though - once you master the gamepad it's a thousand times more comfortable and doesn't feel so 1991.

One tip from another fairly new player - that warning that SE gives you about not forgetting your friends, school and work - take it seriously.

I have a method that helps in that. I make my friends play too!
currently 3 others are in progress of waiting their FFXIs to arrive.

The game that comes to mind for me is Wolfenstein 3D.

If you want to jump ahead a couple of years you could say Duke Nukem 3D as well...

Both had that keyboard only playstyle. Very rarely in the early 90s did you see a game that utilized the mouse in any way.

I know what you mean...my bf has really gotten into the forums, etc. while waiting for his game to arrive...and in the meantime he has gotten me hooked! I can't wait to start playing now!!!! So, at least when we're both hooked on it, we'll both be playing the same thing...lol...

After my 5 month break, I tried playing this with a keyboard, after 5 minutes, I Went and bought a new ps2 and just reinstalled everthing. God bless the controller!

it's been said before, but try the controller. after ten minutes of playing, you'll never want to touch the mouse again.

this game doesn't play like a normal pc mmo. it plays more like a ps2 game... which is exactly what it is, actually.

Both the USB keyboard and the controller are great. Different people have different preferences. That's all.

Well, now that this thread has evolved into another infamous, controller vs. USB keyboard thread, did you have any more thoughts on the actual game, Rei?

The fact that this game gives you so many options about how you want to play is an advantage in and of itself. Whether you choose Mouse+keyboard, numberpad layout, WASD layout, or even a controller is nothing more then a matter of opinion.

Control the character with my middle three fingers on the Numpad, move the camera with my thumb, and I can open the menu or zoom in and out with my pinky.

Ohh good description ^^ this is what I do too. Right hand for movement/camera/menu controls and left hand for macros/targeting generally

Macros and Auto run is your best friend ^-^

Mmmm-m. after some testing, I think I can do with 'full mode' and by steering with numpad. Only thing is. HOW DO I TURN THE CAM IN COMBAT >_<

You will get used to controller or keyboard only, dont use the mouse, my guess is they made it suck so bad just to force you to buy a controller, or play with keyboard.

Controlling FFXI is just like controlling.. say.. lara croft in tomb raider, the controls are very similar, move with left analog stick, shift camera with right analog stick, its so sexy but at the same time so taken for granted, i am SICK of point and click, mouses have no place in gaming as far as quick action is concerned.
