  • Still room for new players?

I was forced to quit FFXI about a year after NA launch due to financial reasons. By the time I got back up on my feet enough to start it up again, my brother bought World of Warcraft and begged me into playing it with him instead. It was a fun time, but I just never could get into it as much as he did.

Well now my brother is getting seriously burnt out on the game and has ordered the gold box FFXI and offered me his guest pass to get started again, and I honestly couldn't have been happier.

    I loved this game.

But I've been gone for so long, and if there is anything that I have learned from WoW and EQ, there is a point in which a game isn't that good for 'new players' any longer. Is this the case with FFXI now? The game was fine when I played, and I constantly had parties when leveling my jobs.

What difficulties am I going to have getting into this game?

Well if you haven't noticed XBox 360 version of FFXI is going to be coming out in April, that means there is a likely chance of many new players coming into the game. Also on April the new Expansion "Treasures of Aht Urhgan" is being released with 2 known new jobs with it. So many of the older players are likely to be playing the starting levels again to level the new jobs, so for any new players starting I say you still got a great chance finding parties and getting yourself up in level.

If you still have your old POL ID and password, you should try reactivating your content ID first. I was gone for almost a year and a half, and was able to get mine back. Saved me 70+ days worth of playing

Well, I would have to start over on a new server anyway. My brother will be playing with his friends on Leviathan and I used to play on Odin. The only thing that I would still use would be my Tetra Master collection, but I'll just start a new one as my old one wasn't that well stocked.

There's a couple reasons this isn't really a problem for finding parties, leveling, doing missions, etc.:

            1. XBox360 release. New platform, new players.

            2. FFXI already encourages (or forces) players to play multiple jobs. Every day there are longtime players switching to a level 10 or 20 job to level it up.

            3. Treasures of Aht Urhgan will introduce at least two new jobs (rumor says 3, but only 2 are confirmed yet), which even people who've been playing for years will have to start at level 1.

On the other hand, if you really, really love crafting, you kind of do have a problem. The market for every craft on pretty much every server is heavily oversaturated already, and past practice suggests that if they do create new servers, they will allow character transfers, thus the new servers will probably start with a base of high-level crafters already there. So, basically, it's impossible to level crafting without substantial losses, and will remain that way pretty much forever.

If you don't mind farming crafting materials, selling them (or making money any other way, but crafting materials are generally a good reliable source) and buying the products, then that's fine, but if you just *have* to do your own crafting, it's going to cost you.

                Sans the crafting, Macht. LOL

Karinya's right on the money. This game just has way too many veteran JP crafters who control the economy, whether they will acknowledge this is a whole different matter. To put it simply, crafting from zero blows. Good luck, though, maybe your server will have a different result ...

There are always people in Valkurm Dunes and Quifim... always leveling a subjob or 2nd job and whatnot.

You have nothing to worry about.

Not exactly, depends on your server.

Serveral veteran level crafters are not very old, and there is plenty room for more. Just like real life someone has to put in the time and gil before they can reach that status.

This does not mean you need to craft for an income either. It's in every sense a market economy, for every crafter, someone must provide them with farmed materials.

While being on the top of the weath bracket is a pipe dream, one has to be realistic, you can't be half @ss and expect to be king of the hill. Making stable income to live comfortably isn't hard for most of us, but don't think anyone who get's to level 60 is automatically entitled to have scorp+1s, or lvl 75, with full AF2.

I know someone who just came back into the game, after half a year, and having to remake a character. He's actually doing better off then he was with his high level char back then.

Im realy hoping that the xbox 360 will bring in alot of new people so i can do missions with them and stuff, at the moment is kinda anoying finding anyone to do something simplistic like rank 1-2.

You just need to be lucky and on the right server. I already said, before Kuu did, that you might be lucky or unlucky on your server. Either you play the role of material gatherer for crafters or you take up crafting yourself. However, most servers will screw you on both ends, as I've already got to live it on two different servers (The youngest servers as well) New servers do not always mean a good thing ...
