There's always a lot of discussion about Teleport-Anything prices. What is fair price to offer, what is fair price to ask. Why do White Mages charge so much (or so little).
I was bored while I was watching the Seahawks and Panthers play, and decided to run a little experiment. What would happen if I offered Teleport-Anything for 0gil while I watched the game.
Could I put the Tele-taxi charging 2k/3k out of business for the day? Could I get those people offering 5k - 10k to save thier money? It seemed like an interesting question, so I tried it with one requirement.
All you had to do was ask.
Now that being said, here's the exact situation. In Lower Jeuno, right now. People are offering 3k-7k for teleports in shouts. We're talking 5k for Dem. 7k for Yhoat. 3k for Altep. 4k for Mea. Not just one or two, but a constant stream of people offering these prices, with even the ocassional 10k offering. This is all to say nothing of the parties asking for teleports.
There is a single Tele-taxi opperating in Lower Jeuno offering 2k for Mea/Holla/Dem, 3k for the others.
My macro, with the auto-translate just to play it safe, offered all teleports for 0gil, /no price, please /tell thank you.
Every time the other Tele-Taxi would advertise, I would advertise. The difference being that I would not accept a Teleport unless someone sent me a /tell and asked me.
Standing right next to me while I did this was a friend of mine who was not advertising, but simply inviting people into her party and Teleporting based soley on what they offered, first come first served, even if they offered nothing.
Three people, three different methods. One offering free teleports, no questions asked. You join party, I take you there now.
And what happened?
Advertiser: The person advertising the 2k/3k teleports - more expensive by 1k than any other taxies in the last week - had a constant stream of teleports. He /she would get a party, and then the advertising would stop for a min or two. Then they would start back up... then stop... start back up... and then stop. I could set my clock by the frequency.
My Friend: My friend was doing the same thing. Teleport, teleport, teleport, teleport. And presumably making good money from the turnover rate.
Me: Two teleports. Yes, that is it. In the time these people made 20+ teleports, I did two. I finally got a third /tell while I was typing this up, and it was an LS member (It is well known in my LS's that I never charge other members).
Honestly, this raises some interesting questions. We all know that Regional Teleports are a wonderful way to get around, and surely they are much cheaper than /sh in Lower Jeuno. But they do require an investment of time (and money for the initial teleports in most cases) to get them in the first place.
But even when presented with the option of free Teleports, those offering Gil for the same services had significant amount of trafic, and those /sh with thier own price offers -continued- to /sh outrageous prices instead of taking the free teleport.
In two cases I watched as a person was declined a teleport-for-gil because of a full party, and waited around -right next to me- while I was shouting giving away free teleports. They waited right up until the other Taxi came back, and then each payed 2k for a teleport, despite my three /sh.
Most people seem to be just too lazy, or don't play frequently enough to spend time on unlocking RTs. This is evidenced by the fact that Teleports, despite the increasing use of RTs, continue to go up in price. So I can understand taking a paid teleport over an RT.
But I'm entirely baffled that people would continually pay high prices when free was an option. I wonder if I would have any different results with this little experiment if I did it during EU or JP peak instead of NA peak...
