  • Teleport-Anything <No, thanks.>

There's always a lot of discussion about Teleport-Anything prices. What is fair price to offer, what is fair price to ask. Why do White Mages charge so much (or so little).

I was bored while I was watching the Seahawks and Panthers play, and decided to run a little experiment. What would happen if I offered Teleport-Anything for 0gil while I watched the game.

Could I put the Tele-taxi charging 2k/3k out of business for the day? Could I get those people offering 5k - 10k to save thier money? It seemed like an interesting question, so I tried it with one requirement.

All you had to do was ask.

Now that being said, here's the exact situation. In Lower Jeuno, right now. People are offering 3k-7k for teleports in shouts. We're talking 5k for Dem. 7k for Yhoat. 3k for Altep. 4k for Mea. Not just one or two, but a constant stream of people offering these prices, with even the ocassional 10k offering. This is all to say nothing of the parties asking for teleports.

There is a single Tele-taxi opperating in Lower Jeuno offering 2k for Mea/Holla/Dem, 3k for the others.

My macro, with the auto-translate just to play it safe, offered all teleports for 0gil, /no price, please /tell thank you.

Every time the other Tele-Taxi would advertise, I would advertise. The difference being that I would not accept a Teleport unless someone sent me a /tell and asked me.

Standing right next to me while I did this was a friend of mine who was not advertising, but simply inviting people into her party and Teleporting based soley on what they offered, first come first served, even if they offered nothing.

Three people, three different methods. One offering free teleports, no questions asked. You join party, I take you there now.

    And what happened?

Advertiser: The person advertising the 2k/3k teleports - more expensive by 1k than any other taxies in the last week - had a constant stream of teleports. He /she would get a party, and then the advertising would stop for a min or two. Then they would start back up... then stop... start back up... and then stop. I could set my clock by the frequency.

My Friend: My friend was doing the same thing. Teleport, teleport, teleport, teleport. And presumably making good money from the turnover rate.

Me: Two teleports. Yes, that is it. In the time these people made 20+ teleports, I did two. I finally got a third /tell while I was typing this up, and it was an LS member (It is well known in my LS's that I never charge other members).

Honestly, this raises some interesting questions. We all know that Regional Teleports are a wonderful way to get around, and surely they are much cheaper than /sh in Lower Jeuno. But they do require an investment of time (and money for the initial teleports in most cases) to get them in the first place.

But even when presented with the option of free Teleports, those offering Gil for the same services had significant amount of trafic, and those /sh with thier own price offers -continued- to /sh outrageous prices instead of taking the free teleport.

In two cases I watched as a person was declined a teleport-for-gil because of a full party, and waited around -right next to me- while I was shouting giving away free teleports. They waited right up until the other Taxi came back, and then each payed 2k for a teleport, despite my three /sh.

Most people seem to be just too lazy, or don't play frequently enough to spend time on unlocking RTs. This is evidenced by the fact that Teleports, despite the increasing use of RTs, continue to go up in price. So I can understand taking a paid teleport over an RT.

But I'm entirely baffled that people would continually pay high prices when free was an option. I wonder if I would have any different results with this little experiment if I did it during EU or JP peak instead of NA peak...

They might have thought you were joking or lying. Somebody angry at the tele-taxis or just trying to **** with people. I once offered teleports for free and got flamed by the guys charging 500-1000 back in the day.

Edit: In fact I was often given money, sometimes way over the going rate, even when I asked for nothing. A few times I'd get money shoved at me repeatedly even if I refused.

I've seen this happen, and I'll chalk it up to people just wanting to be nice, and while I think its possible some people assumed I was lying, doesn't change the fact that you stand between the guide stone and the stairs to the MH, and over half the people wanting teleports will see you casting the spells. Agreed, people assuming i'm lying or joking probably accounted for some of the difference...

but only two teleports compared to twenty...?

I think your server is just taking a bunch of crazy pills. Even if you weren't offering free tele's, they are willing to pay out the ying yang for one.

What I find odd is that people who need a tele will try to scam a porter of the fee. Once had a friend who ported a player, after telling player how much it would cost (Player agreed to pay this) and right after porting, player disbanded. Now it is proper habit for a WHM to collect the fee first and then port off (Although there are a few bad apples out there that will take the fee and immediately disband the party)

I usually click to trade with the porter as soon as I can target them.

sometime people may not see what you shout or are totally blind somehow lol.
as for people who pay u even though u shouted free is maybe they are kind or responsible as everyone need gil and for your effort and time you should at least get pay some gil.
I usually will pay even though the teleporter shout is free.
Unless is my own friend who is teleporting me then is free ;p

It's not the money. The reason he got no business is the /tell requirement. People don't want to have to chit chat, they just want to invite and go. Compare this to the self check out lines at Wal Mart or atms. People like doing things quick. I would pay 2k for a tele if meant I could leave right away and didn't have to chat with them even if they said they were free.

I have always had bad experiences when a whm required tell. There was typically something funny going on that involved them being unable to tele you right away. Now I save the time and avoid ones that require tell.

By the same token... Why would you watch someone do free teleports, then stand around and wait to pay when you could do it for free? That's what really bafles me; that people would spend more time waiting to pay, then doing it for free right now.

As to the /tell thing, maybe next time I will just <Please invite me.> and see if that changes the outcome any.

                        I agree with Rones 100%

When I am looking for a tele I want the mage to invite me and then port me, nothing in between. Game time is sucked up enough with other monotonous chores that adding more to it (no matter how insignificant) is just a hassle.

Also by the same token, teleport services have standards that, once again, if you break from them it adds more time/delay/hassle. When I get invite I have a process - accept, map find the mage, target mage, trade, teleport. And that's fairly universal and gets me on my way. The only time I deviate from this is when I shout for express tele and offer the price of a full PT being tele'd for just me to be tele'd (this is when someone from HNMLS gets on the horn to say a *RARE* HNM is up and unclaimed - for instance Vinnegaroon the other day - at this juncture you don't have time to FK around. You need to get their and assemble in minutes.)

Then there's the cost - I offer 2K normally for wherever (sometimes 3K for yhoat/vhazl/altep on the weekends) and generally wait no longer than 1-2 minutes. I can average 1-4M/day crafting - what's 2K to me? I am sure this is the same with alot of other HL players/crafters. I'm paying for a service I need and it's not even putting a mark on my bank, it's the least I can do. If it keeps you taxis happy and keeps you from upping prices to 10-20K (given the economy and the "inflation" you could EASILY get away with charging that much if all the WHMs got together and standardized their prices.

i wont say his name but there is a stupid whm on ragnarok who expects ppl to pay him 10k for mea-holla-dem, 20k for yhoat-altep and 30l for vhazl

I also agree. I'm a whm and I can say that if I do "/t me" in my shouts that I don't get much business. People shout for teles and then want you to invite. They are lazy, plain and simple. The least amount of effort they have to put into it the better. I usually tele for free and I just invite people as they shout. The only people that have complained about my free prices were the JP. I think I offended them! >.<

You guys always make it sound bad for a WHM to charge for teles. I'm poor and trying to get the spells I need to lvl my different jobs. So I sit in Lower Jeuno and when someone shouts tele, reward or not, I invite them.

If they pay before or after, I don't care. If they don't pay at all, I don't care. If they ask me how much, I always tell them "Whatever you think it's worth". Because they're paying for the time I spend in Lower Jeuno instead of farming silk, not the actually MP/teleportation.

So I don't ask for money, but I gladly accept any donation amount. Is this wrong?

(although it does bother me when prices on my server seem to be 1k minimum that I get from people, and someone with over 20mil in equipment tipped me 500 gil for a teleport-mea. Mea is the hardest of the first 3 scrolls to get so normally people appreciate them more. Not that I really care about the 500 gil, but I didn't even get a thank you as they run off with their Emprerors Hairpin, Leaping boots, and full set of +1 armor....)
