Heres the news from Englands end....

Latest news I ahve heard is that the PS3 had teething problems, sony ar very tight lipped about what was going wrong with it, but it has delayed the release. The latest Uk release estimate (US and Japan may be different) is that they will be releasing it at Christmas at a cost of £360 ($604), so expect shortages of it like the xbox360 last year, as they do this on purpose becuase it gives them free media coverage. My friend did notice an xbox360 on uk ebay cbeing sold for 2k!! FFxi will not as far as I gather have a special release on the PS3 as mentioned above the PS3 comes with an emulator so why spend lots of extra money producing code for this when they can already have the game played on the system. Final fantasy 12 and Derge of Cerbarus is to be released on the PS2 this year as well, not the PS3, though of course you will stilll be able to play them on it. I think they are honing their resources now in producing a new MMORPG which will probably debut as the next FF installment released for the PS3 and PC (though i think they would release a version on the xbox360 to maximise their audience) don't expect this for at least 2-3 years if it follows in the footsteps of FF12!!!!

The teething problems are graphics engine based, the technology they have produced is giving developers some headaches in being able to utilise it to the full. Sony do not want to fall down the pit of the xbox360 where the first games released weren't really giving a wow factor that Microsoft wanted. This is from a very reputable console forum of which my friend whos a developer has exclusive access to which has members from the leading development companies.

As for the PS2 releases, the PS2's full potential still hasn't been used to the fully, however FF12 is going to exploit this and be a very impressive graphically game, there was no need to delay it even more until the PS3 release, so you can imagine seeing the quality of graphics etc. for FF12 on the PS2, what will the next installment look like on the PS3 whos graphics engine is nearly 4 times more powerful.

An example was quoted for a game in development where in the older games the graphics were just 2 texture maps melded together. Now the whole tree is drawn in full 3D solid polygon construction with excellent bark texture details, all the sepeate brances twigs leaves etc. all acting independantly in the wind and when cars drive past. You can imagine what SE could do with this high realism engine. Just think back to FF spirits within film and the detail in that. This is the next step and they will be even bettering it (if thats such a word!!). This is not speculation this is how the games industry is progressing and believe me SE are certainly not going to let us down and will keep on trying to break the boundries like they have done in the past.

Programing wize, the ps3 is quite alike to the ps2, both intentional and unintentional, so ffxi on ps3 all boils down to money and hype.

There should be very little(in relative sense) to do it for ps3. Though graphics wize, it's more of the same.

As for HDD...sony is taking the high road, with a slot for it, but not bundled(as of yet). As hot as the 360 is selling at, it's all hype trying to pass off a 20gig 2.5" drive in a fancy case for $100, and then DRM it to prevent 3rd party.

They made decide to bundle it in the future...but until then, 3rd party isn't going to pass up the chance anyway, once they specs are out in the open.

Maybe they might do it ala ps2 fashion, and release a Sony HDD value pack with a bunch of stuff preinstalled.

As for the last generation of ps2 games...look at soul calibur 3...the thing is almost xbox360 (launch) level graphics sans 720p.

Yes they aren't the same game but they are both fighting games and no way are they that close in quality. Now wait for the PS3, it has the potential to put the 360 to shame but the PS2, no.

Don't know if GrandMom's SM status is premanent yet or not, given to her for a specific purpose and current a temp status. Still got to wait and see if PiNG decides to leave it or not. Either way was recently so not to far off.

We still had our usual champaigne and welcoming for her though

ANYway, I was going to post similar screenshots, but I was going to add that unlike the conversion from Playstation to Dreamcast, the change from this generation hasn't made me say "ZOMG I NEED TO GET A 360!!"

In all honesty, I need a killer app for this system before I consider shelling out the dough. For some ppl, he FFXI beta was enough, for me, I'm not going to by a system that I can't get online with (my dorm is evil >.>), to play the game I only wanted to get it for, and play games I have no interest in.

I think that a major problem is that there is no WOW factor for the wvast majority, and the impending doom of the system is that we are expecting something better from Sony.

Anyone else read Dan Hsu's interview with Peter Moore? Talk about intense >.> He totally tried ripping Moore a new one, to which Moore showed his PR expertise by cooly dodging each blow.

He's like a damn THF in Ballista fighting a MNK who did Hundred Fists, to which he responsed with Perfect Dodge =[

Looks decently close to me.

You're so used to your 720p..you forget just how bumping up resolutions do to graphics.

I can't quite post pictures right now, but try putting ffxi on 800x400 screen shot then put it on 1280x720.

The quality changed magically just bumping up resolution.

There's smoke and mirrors, and then there's actuall quality. Related to a previous thread, your eyes need more relativity.

I don't understand your point Kuu. Since you can't play SC3 in 720p (its 480) the point is moot and the 360's graphics top it. Simple as that. You can wish all you want but its not going to happen. Now if you were comparing the PS3 to the 360, then there would be a discussion.

If you play the 360 on a normal tv instead of a hd-tv, it looks pretty much the same as the original xbox.
