  • Will we See FFXI on the PS3 or be left out?

Can we play the Ps2 Ver. Of FFXI on the Ps3? Or will they make a new update for it like a new updated version of the current on on ps2 for the ps3? I can't find ANY info. About this I just bought mine for the PS2 and and I LOVE IT! I know the Xbox360 is Getting it and the PC has it. So where does that leave the Ps3? Please help me out.
I am always looking to make new friends on FFXI. Also Its not looking to Hot for MMORPGS Im really getting depressed here.

PS3 isn't even out, so I'm not so sure why you're hot and bothered by this. Just play the PS2 version and eventually something will come out. In the meantime, if better graphics is what you're seeking for, move on to the PC version.

Yeah, trust me, if it had been mentioned for the PS3, you'd see it on this forum

I know it's tough for a lot of ppl, since not everyone has a compatable PC, so the PS2 is very ideal for that situation. the 360 and, eventually, the PS3, will be the same deal. Just wait it out, and things will turn out for the better.

Chances are you won't be seeing FFXI on the PS3 (maybe via the PS2 emulator that comes with the PS3, but that's it). Square Soft has been hinting (and I believe one of the higher up devs made some direct comments) that they are working on a MMORPG that would be a follow up to FFXI.

Do you have a link to that? I'd really like to see it, since its the first time I've heard it mentioned. I know of another mmo that SE is making, but its not a FF one. I figure it will be atleast a couple more years before we have a release date or anything like that, there is still too much money coming from XI right now. Also be interesting to see if its a sequel, or be like most other FF games and be totally new.

Re: Will we See FFXI on the PS3 or be left out?

Yes the chances of FFXI coming on the PS3 are looking very dim. You would have thought to combat the 360 having it that they would have announced it's coming to the PS3. This way the Sony lovers wouldn't even have the evil thoughts of buying a 360! LOL But no announcement yet about it so I'm thinking the chances are slim.

What I would hate to see is that they keep it for the PS2, 360 and PC only. If they keep supporting the PS2 version, they will never tweak it at all. This will not encourage growth but stifle it. Discontinuing support for the PS2 eventually would be better for the game, imo. Eventually people are going to have PS2's that die, HDD's that go, etc. it happens. Replacements are going to be hard to get and many people are very leary of buying used. So in the end the PS2 fans are going to wane and still supporting a small contingent wouldn't be prudent. But as they've show us over and over, they aren't very logical are they? LOL

Could it be that they are saving a big announcement for the PS3? I'm positive they are. I know that they have big plans for POL and adding many more games via it. I don't see them dropping that project for a while. While there won't be a big surprise when the PS3 is released me thinks, I do think that when they finally decide to release the hard drive for the PS3 there will be. Could the surprise to come on the heals of the hard drive be a new Final Fantasy MMO? FFXIII or FFIV online? I do think that there will be another FF MMO title coming. FFXI is a successful title for them that brought in good $$$. If the game start to slump drastically, there will be something they do....something.....

Re: Will we See FFXI on the PS3 or be left out?

My friend told me some things and I've taken a few conclusions:

For one, we started talking about how diablolos is over powered, then that moved on into the story behind him, and how CoP connected to RoZ, and how these will tie into ToA.

                New Summons

So now with all this in mind, SE seems very story oriented in their game, and I have no doubt FFXI will continue for another generation, in which they'll have to discontinue PS2 support one way or another.

I can't see why improving on FFXI would force them to discontinue PS2 support. Basically the only difference is PS2 is locked at a specific detail/resolution. It's just the 'minimum system requirements' for FFXI if you will.

The game seems to run inside a virtual machine (POL) which is the same concept behind Java. This is why they are able to have FFXI available on so many different systems - they don't port the entire game, just POL.

Anyway, back on topic. I'd love to see FFXI for the PS3, and I'm sure SE will probably release it. Why? Firstly the PS3 is going to sell like mad on Sony and SEs home turf (Japan, where the 360 is collecting dust on shelves). Secondly, it's obvious SE is interested in porting their POL virtual machine to every capable platform.

                    Just my 2 cents.

I would be mighty suprised if they don't release FFXI unto the PS3. I mean, what reason would they not? It wouldn't make very much sence not to do so.

FFXI is the first major FF game to come out on a non Sony console since FFVII.
(I say major because of the spin off FF games that have come out on other systems i.e. Crystal Chronicles, and the ones on GBA)

I really don't see them abandoning the Playstation right now.

The FF series and Sony go hand in hand. When the PS3 comes out, FFXI will be released for it. I don't see any other alternative. As it's already been said, 360 is doing rotten in Japan. I doubt SE will be alienate the JP players (most of whom play the PS2 version) by not releasing FFXI unto the next PS console.

You're probably thinking of Fantasy Earth, Armando. It looks pretty decent, but it appears to be JP onry. My Beta friend also mentioned that Front Mission Online was being tested for NA, but the devs were having some coding problems (idk WTF could be the problem, but we've seen that SE devs are retarded before. . .)

It's possible to rework core fundamentals once you eliminate the PS2 out of the equation, like making the draw distance not dependant on VRAM, such as the case of that in the PS2, and take advantage of the scalability of PCs and the new generation of consoles.

I think one thing SE CAN do is to take an approach similar to everquest, where you can set your machine on different levels of settings: the lowest would make a lot of different gear look similar and general to save memory and processing, and the higher level would show more articulation.

But these changes we speak of require revamping. If we want to face the honesty, this is an archaic game by design, and the only thing saving it is that it is intensely fun to play and the new content keeps us interested. I understand that there is a lot of life left in the game, that is why people don't support a new version, but with new hardware comes new possibilities, so don't be suprised if a new MMORPG by SE comes out in the next few years.

Yes, even if SE dumps the PS2, to make the graphics better etc. they have to rewrite the entire graphics engine (I've explained this in previous posts of mine, search for them). Which wouldn't be worth it if you didn't also update all of FFXI's art assets... which is where the bulk of the game development time/money goes. So yeah, at this stage in FFXIs lifecycle it doesn't make business sense for SE to do such a thing :\ In the end it is probably better for them to just let FFXI run its life and devote developmental resources to a sequel or another game where they'll actually get a real return on the money.
