The PS2 is also limited by the amount of VRAM it has available to store textures. It only has 2MB available for anything that needs to be displayed, whether that's fonts, UI windows or texture on people's equipment. At the moment SE are getting around this quite well by either adding equipment that looks the same as others, so the same texture is used and by limitting the amount of people displayed at the same time, easily noticable if you want past lower jeuno's AH. It would mean future expansions would either have to continue this trend of adding identicle equipment which could get very boring and end up subtracting from the overall look and feel of the game. A drop in PS2 support would mean that more variations in equipment could be available in the future.

That said I doubt the PS2 version will be dropped any time soon. The biggest player base for FFXI is still Japan, and most of them play the PS2 version rather than the PC.

Re: Will we See FFXI on the PS3 or be left out?

Yeah, last I knew Sony still hadn't decided if they were going to release the PS3 with the HDD or if it was going to be a seperate purchase sometime later on. It's probably in part of this decision that SE hasn't announced if they are doing a PS3 version, I mean after all customers generally seem to be idiotic. Because of that idiocy if SE were to say they are releasing a PS3 version, while the PS3 being capable of supporting it when they make such a statement is unkown. It just makes sense that you'll have customers breathing down SE's necks when it isn't really their fault if they can't put in on the PS3, when it could be something Sony did stupid.

Unless I'm missing an announcement from Sony (which is possible) I could see SE's lack of announcing such a thing to just protect themselves even though it does seem kind of damaging. The best strategy there looks like it's on Sony's shoulders if they were to be more specific as far as HDD so that SE could make such a statement then we'd known.

Who knowns though being that SE has been working with Sony you could come up with conspiracy theories. Such as SE and Sony working like they are now to do some coup de grace to the XBox 360 or just get more profit out of the customers by making them think the XBox 360 will be the only one supporting it in the next gen consoles to get people to buy it and when they feel they've gotten the profit they want there then announce it'll be on the PS3 to tempt players who prefer the PS3 over XBox 360 to buy that. In a way giving a sale edge to both companies.

The only thing permitting me to buy an XB would be the prospect of getting on the FFXI beta and playing FFXI in HD on my TV and so on and so forth. If there is an announcement stating that FFXI is coming to the PS3, watch my interest in 360 disappear. . .

Just proved the point I was trying to make it my long message. If SE announces a PS3 release too soon they could potentially lose some profit they could get by getting consumers to buy it on both consoles. On top of this they are probably trying to make both M$ and Sony happy and best route there does look to let consumers think that it won't come out on PS3 and announce it as a last minute thing, that way the XBox 360 gets its fair share of new players in the influx and the PS3 doesn't end up alienating it's devoted PS2 fans that are currently playing FFXI on it.

During this kind of 'blackout' period SE is kind of alienating their PS fans but much like how SEs stocks shot up when they announced FFX, XI, and XII the animosity will likely vanish just as fast if they do announce it for the PS3.

Re: Will we See FFXI on the PS3 or be left out?

Macht, just FYI, the PS3 won't be coming with a hard drive built in. The confirmation is in the lack of confirmation; that is to say, while much of the specifications were revealed for the PS3 last E3, there was no mention of an internal hard drive; it's pretty safe to assume it won't be coming with one. I won't rule out the possibility, but it's 98% definite IMO.

That said; it does include a 2.5" hard drive slot; i.e. you can go out and buy any lap top hard drive (or 2.5" HD) and insert it into the PS3... which is a step up from 20gb for 100$ or bust model that the X360 is peddling.
The PS3 will also allow for USB mass storage devices to be used... so I'm guessing that also extends to the use of 3.5" USB caddy hard drives.... although I don't have a real confirmation on that, and is one of my bigger apprehensions about storage space for the PS3 (if it allows it, then storage space is no problem... if it blocks it for some reason or another... then mass storage for the PS3 would be more expensive than I was hoping...)

"The PS3 isn't going to come with a hard drive. This is true. That doesn't me mean it won't support mass storage, however. Sony is taking a cue from its experiences in other consumer electronics with PS3 and planning to let the consumer decide how much and what form of storage they need. After all, why drive up the cost of the system by including a hard drive when not everyone will make use of it? Sony intends to let the casual player save their games on low-cost flash memory, but if you find yourself downloading lots of movies and music, various capacities of mircodrives will be accomodated by the PS3's disk drive bay."

So yes the PS3's chances of launching with a hard drive are pretty slim. Sony is currently working on a 4 and 8 gb memory stick pro duo (probably more for the PSP than the PS3). Larger memory sticks could eliminate the need for a hard drive completely for most people. Let's face it, the AVERAGE gamer isn't going to do all of the things some of us technophiles are. (Technophiles....is that just fancy word for geek?? LOL)

Re: Will we See FFXI on the PS3 or be left out?

Someone mentioned about Fantasy Earth. A friend of mine who's beta testing recently told me that beta testing has concluded. The release date has been set I think and it looks to be released on 2/23/06 in Japan. There's also mentioning of the game being released in NA later on in the year or early next year, but will not be on a scale like FFXI. All indications point to FE being a Windows PC release only (No PS2 version) and that if an NA version is released, it will be on entirely different servers than the Japanese players will be on (In other words, no need for autotranslation and other unnecessary functions) It's made to be along the lines of WOW, so this is just SE's answer to Blizzard's MMO title, trying to get back the "casual" customer base that they lost to WOW.

I have the Xbox360 experience right at home--on my PC. Well, not entirely. I got mine hooked up to an HDTV/HD Monitor from Magnavox. Set it at 1024x768 resolution and it looks awesome. Of course, this is without the "enhanced visuals", so I imagine when SE releases these upgrades for the PC (Supposedly), I can really be wowed, and so will my video card.

As for SE not releasing FFXI on the PS3 it is very likely that they will; I have read that they are going for every platform (must find that statement again).
Almost four years experience playing FFXI. I am a Raccoon, not a Hyena--despite my name states I am one.

Get creative and pretend these happened.

It would be nice to see, as that's probably going to be my first choice for next-gen consoles.

4gb memsticks will be in the region of... 800 bucks when it comes out. Yeah... its kinda only for the foolishly rich and professionals (e.g. photographers).
That said, the PS3 will also support the other popular flash memory types include SD and USB flash drives.

The revolution is going to have 512MB of internal flash memory. Pleny for saved games and some roms, not enough to install a game like FFXI on.

Thank you Aeni ^^ That's the game I saw. Yeah, it did seem to deviate from FFXI's style plenty. The character design looks really cool though.
