  • Noob here ^-^

Hey there, names Muffinabus, new to the forums and looking into FFXI. I just recently quit WoW after wasting eight or more months. Had two level 60's everything was goin good, but i felt like i did everything, been there done that.

I had always been a fan of the FF series (FFVII being my favorite) and thought this one looked interesting (; I played WoW with 5 or 6 friends that i knew before i started playing, and two of them quit with me, so we are kinda inbetween games right now, so depending on if its good or not, ima try to convince them to get it and play with me, maybe give one my guest pass... Which brings me to my point ^-^. This is probably frowned upon in the FFXI community but i was wondering if someone had an extra guest pass they would want to kindly hand over (: It's just that, i feel nervous purchasing it with all the things i have been hearing, and want to test it out first, and in an attempt to turn this into more than a begging for a guest pass thread, maybe someone can help me with some things ive heard.

Well first of all there is the economy... is it really as bad as they say? I know WoW had its fair share of Gold Farmers that would inflate prices and exploit the AH, but i hear they are worse here, if thats even possible O_o.

Second, whats the level cap? Such a simple question yet i couldnt find an answer for it in my hours of searching. What i did come up with though, was that around level fifty or so, you are required to do some complicated quests to advance every five levels. True or false?

Third, and probably the most important... whats the combat like? My guess it is not turn based like every other FF (which i wish it was, not too many turn based MMO's out there, but i guess it doesnt really appeal to the majority, huh). Are the battles smooth and finished, nice affects, lots of spells etc, etc.? And how do the summons come into play in this game (which i think are called avatars now, if im not mistaken)?

Well so yeah, so if you cant help me out with a guest pass... hopefully i can get some of my questions answered so i can be more confident when i go to the store to purchase it.

Thanks and hope to see you in game.

well I don't have a guest pass, but I can tell you that in order to get past a certain level you do have to complete a quest. The quests are called Genkai or Limit Break quests and you have to do them at 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70 to progress further. Not all of them are complicated. Some are difficult. Others are dangerous. A couple are fairly very easy.

I don't know how bad the economy on WoW is, but here we've had some inflation problems lately. Seems some genius gil selling companies decided to offer holiday sales on their gil and NORMAL players, not gillsellers, decided to capitalize on this by raising the prices of items 2 or 3 times as much over a very short period of time. So now a lot of people are complaining about it. That's the short version.

I'll let someone else talk about the battle aspect of the game, or I may come by and do so myself later if noone else has.

Well, the economy is suck in a few respects. Prices are high, but it ends up helping new players as much as hurting them. My fav. example is Silk Thread, a drop from cralwers in low level areas around Windurst where new players level. The price of those threads double a few updates ago, now selling 4k a pop. Hurts a lot of the high level Clothcrafters. BUT, because you (A new player) can sell those items at a higher price, and still purchase your first 20 levels worth of equipment from NPCs, you end up with more gil, sooner. I think its actually easier to start out now than it was a year ago when I began, if watching my roomates (who started this month) is any indication.

The current levelcap is 75, and yes, there are quests to do. The Limit Break quests are every five levels as you say, but like every quest you only have to do it once. So if you take a second (or more) job to 75, you don't have to repeat the quests. I don't know about other servers, but on Odin it is fairly easy to get parties for thoses quests.

Obviously the combat tactics for each job differ, but as a general rule the mechanics for combat are fairly easy. You target an enemy and attack. The computer does the rest. You will swing your weapon over and over and over again until you or it are dead.

If you want to cast magic, you just cast it. If you want to use a weapons kill or a job ability, you just use it. Magic, weapon skills, and job abilities all have recast/use timers. When they reach 0 again, you can use them again. There's a wide range of spells, though you definitly get tired of seeing some of them, just like in any game. I think I have around 120-150 spells right now across all my jobs. Maybe more. I havn't really counted.

All in all the battle system is pretty good for an MMO, in my opinion. Just the right amount of auto-attack + player control.

Summoners call avatars like any magic, and they play multiple roles ranging from damage dealers, to buffs, to curing. Avatars stay out as long as you want them, constantly draining MP, and can do thier special attacks aprox. every 60seconds I think.

      I hope that helps ^^

Level cap is 75, starting at level 50 you have to do a cap quest every 5 levels, only 5 and their not too hard.

Basic combat is like WoW, its auto attack with an occasional abilities used if your a melee, constant abilities if you are a mage. If you go Melee your gonna do Alot less macro using in FFXI. Shortest recast on ability timers your gonna use for melees are 1 minute, so no ability spamming for you anymore ^_^

Wow O_O This forum has a high reply:view ratio, ^-^ thanks for the fast responses. One thing im still kinda confused about though is the job system... So you pick one to start off with (i was considering white magic) then a secondary later on or how does that work? Like if i wanted white as my primary and black as my secondary, is my black going to be as powerful as someone else who has black primarily chosen?

Once again, thanks for the fast replies, im learning*... yeah, typos FTL.

lol just would like to comment on Nanatsu's post.. Your making out to be like a recent thing...people didnt start spamming IGE with credit card numbers since christmas, things have always been rising at somewhat unreasonable rates because of IGE/MOGS, but recently -> xmas <- . these redicualously inflated prices have became even more rediculous... prices doubling, tripling. Dont worry too much about it though.

When you start playing remember, you dont need the best gear, but the best gear for what you can afford, and if its over 50k before level 30 you probobly dont need it

What I was commenting on was recent. I said explicitly that gil companies had a sale recently and this caused prices to double and triple more than they already have. I wasn't talking about the state of the economy before that. I was talking about the state of things now, as in right now. And yeah, people did buy more gil over the holidays than usual because of the sales.

                Jobs

You can switch to any job at any time ( that you have unlocked )

                Starting jobs are:

                White Mage
                Black Mage
                Red Mage
                Monk
                Warrior
                Theif

you can level anyone you want to 75

The subjob system lets you have a job as a sub. So instead of being a lv75warrior, you become a lv75warrior/37Monk

Subjobs can only be half the level of your main while equipped. The Monk on that lv 75 warrior will be at 37 when he subs it, but when he unsubs it, it goes back to whatever level it really is. If his monk was at 22 and he subs it, He'll be a 75warrior/22monk. If his monk is leveld to 75 when he subs it, he'll still be a 75warropr/37monk, not 75warrior/75monk.

if you are warrior/monk, monk wont get any exp. Noobs commonly think you can exp your sub while its equipped. but no ^_^

Subjob quest is available at 18, its not har, just have to collect a couple items..

When a job is subbed you also get all the abilities that job has. a lv 50warrir/25 ninja will have all the abilities of a 50 war and a 25ninja. you also get some small stat boost from the job you have subbed.

And lastly subjob guides on what subjob to equip to your main you can find easily, i think the job specific forums have subjob guides for mostly every job.

                Double Post Edited:
Hehe dont mistake what i said, was just saying its not a new problem from a recent time. Its been here for a long time. "we've had some inflation problems lately" can be a very misleading thing to say

                  Re: Noob here ^-^

here's another thread started by someone much like you. he was thinking of quitting wow and switching to ffxi, and he asked his questions.

                  here's the thread

                  http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51966

in ffxi, you can change jobs at any time. unlike in wow where you have to stay the job you started as until you start a new character. in ffxi, you talk to a moogle in town, and he will change your job (White mage, warrior, etc) to any job you have unlocked. don't lock yourself into being one and only one job, and remember you can try out all the jobs before you choose to seriously level one.

there are different races as well. any race can play any job. there are minor differences in hp, etc, but those differences are minor, so pick whichever race and job combination you want.

at level 18, you are allowed to do a particular quest. once you have done this quest, you may equip yourself with a subjob. your subjob is any job you pick that you currently have access to, and you will have all the job abilities/spells that subjob has. the sub job, however, is restricted to being half the level of whatever your main job is. let's say you decided to be a black mage with a white mage sub. you would have all the spells of a black mage, plus all the spells of a white mage half your level. you must, of course, level that white mage ahead of time for this to work. only your main job gains exp.

remember also that, after about level 11 or so, 99% of all your exp will be gained in parties. at level 11, head to a place called valkrum dunes and seek party. anyone in game will be able to show you where to find it. kill weak mobs in the two zones next to valkrum (called konstat highlands or La theinne plateau) for some exp while you are waiting for a party invite. remember, invites are easiest to get on saturdays i think, because that's when other people play.

                  any other questions?

                    Re: Noob here ^-^

Ooo, i think i understand the job system now... and i had no idea that there was player housing ^-^.

So basically, you pick a job, at 18 you can learn sub jobs... but somethin i saw in your post Aegina is that if you change your main job at 18... it goes back down to level 1? Say i have my white mage, and i want to learn black mage for my sub at 18... i then have 1 Whm / 1 Bhm or is that only when you change your 18 Whm to be 1 Bhm / 1 Whm? Then there are quests you do around level 30 or so to get another job to unlock like summoner or something? So i could have a level 37 Whm while i level my summoner to 75 then make my Whm my sub and have 75/37? WOW THIS IS CONFUSING!

Also, are there attributes and stuff you can put points into like in most MMO's, or is it like WoW where it automatically puts points into the attributes best fit for the class you are?

you have no penalty for changing jobs. changing jobs doesn't cause you to lose xp, but each job must be levelled seperately

edit: but, your sub job will be temporarily capped to whatever your current main job is set to
