The 360 version is in beta, and the beta is available in this month's OGM magazine I think. You'll be required to have a hard drive to install the game though. You can use this period to try it out before you decide to buy.

FFXI appeals to only a certain crowd. It's considered more hardcore because you're required to invest more time into the game, but the rewards are far greater than any other MMO. It has a static plot like a normal console RPG, but to level up you'll need to be in parties all the time.

White Mage is a good starting choice mostly because it's the staple sub of the casting jobs. Black Mages, Red Mages, Summoners, Bards, Beastmasters, and Dragoons will all use White Mage as a sub job at some point. It's very important to keep your sub job leveled up so you can reap the maximum benefits. Black Mage is also a wise choice as a sub for White Mage because Black Mages have a larger pool of MP and gain passive traits that add to that pool. Tarus, Humes, and Mithra will be your best bet if you want to be a mage, but any race will do just fine.

Yeah i was thinkin bout jus gettin the magazine to try it out, but the way i figure it, i can probably get the full game on the pc for a few bucks more, considering how i dont have a subscription to OXM. Hehe, sigh, pc it is i guess ^-^.

Hmm kinda sounds like you wanna go SMN, a little tip for you...Dont start off as SMN..

To get the avatars you need to be

            A) High LVL and fight them then return to the taru who gave you the quest and get the SMN
            B) LVL 20 and you do a Solo fight which is pretty hard for a starting SMNs

Now if you want Fenrir which is pretty usefull at lvl 43, you need to get wispers from the 6 elemental avatars which requires fighting them but not returning to the quest NM, once thats done you go to windurst and talk to a NPC there that gives you the Fenrir quest..Just this fight is alot harder then the other ones...

And Diabolos which isnt really usefull till 65, but requires 3-5 in CoP, and is the hardest avatar fight...

Then the few items that SMN need that are hard to obtain like Carbuncle mitts and such...

So it would really be a good idea to be lvl 60+ before starting SMN due to SMN is highly focused on the summons you have and your skill where others are more gear based...

              new comers :D
i'd like to add a bit more to the battle system commentary.

i feel that ffxi battle system is more deliberate. if that's the right adjective. each action you take, each swing you take, each spell you case has more meaning to it. if you get interrupted while casting it makes a big deal. if you miss a lot of your attacks or your dmg output is low, it means a lot. when you land your sneak/trick attack it takes off a large chunk of mob hp but if you mess up and miss, you not only miss your atk but you mess up the skill chain as well. this is what i mean by deliberate.

in wow, i find the battle system very hack and slash. you can get interrupted 2-3 times during a spell but you still eventually get it off. melee attacks are very fast so missing a some doesnt make a difference since you are attacking again right after that. if you miss cast a spell, its not a big deal since your mana auto regens itself within minutes, as well as your health. timers on abilties are so fast compared to ffxi that you can spam the same ones over and over ftw.

in the end, its all ones taste, but i find ffxi to be more thoughtful when battling. battles are much longer in ffxi and aggro is more dangerous.

Hope you enjoy FFXI, I have played both and I must say FFXI is my favourite. If you think 8 months was a long time, /welcome to FFXI. say goodbye to the next 18 months of your life

If you like the "instances" in WOW you will really like FFXI. The co-operative element in WOW instances is just like normal EXP parties in FFXI. It is note worthy however that WOW instances are very "watered down" in comparison to FFXI parties, FFXI is far less forgiving than WOW and any mistakes you make will cost either you or your party dearly (you loose EXP on death and can level DOWN if you die).

The best advice I can give is play seriously, craft early and pay the utmost attention possible to how you actions affect others in your party. Understanding the consequences of your actions turns an average player into a great player and we all know there are more average players than great.

i don't suggest you start crafting until you have at least one job at a high level. crafting takes a massive investment in money before you start to get a real return from your investment.

I was thinking fishing and cooking, both are easy to pickup at low levels, ingrediants are readily available at low levels and you can actually make a profit on some items.
