  • Needing Help With The Chocobo Quest In Bastok.

Now, I know this should be in the Quest Section, but I feel a bit apprehensive about it, because people have been posting most of their messages here in "General Discussion" and in this case, I feel that they get more replies in this way. Though having said this, I'm sure a moderator will move it, so it's fine.

    Anyway, here's my question.
I came across a quest in Bastok Mines yesterday. It's a Chocobo quest of some kind, and I think it starts in the stables there in Bastok Mines.

There is an NPC who says something about a resident mislaying a chocobo, and they want me to ride the Chocobo from Bastok, all the way to Windurst.
But my problem is...... how do you ride a Chocobo from Bastok to Windurst without taking the boat/ferry?
Is there a fairly long route that you can take?
If this is the case, then can someone please tell me what the route is, as I have absolutely NO idea.

Also, what is the prize that you get at the end of it please?

Is this a new quest which has been added in recently, because I cannot find it listed on any of the FFXl helpful sites.

That is a long route, and chances are you won't be able to make it without riding gear, and being very efficient in your movements. Basically, you have to go by way of the area around Jeuno. Zone list:

    South Gustaberg
    North Gustaberg
    Konschtat Highlands
    Pashhow Marshlands
    Rolanberry Fields
    Sauromugue Champaign
    Meriphitaud Mountains
    Tahrongi Canyon
    East Sarutabaruta

The zone to Sauromugue Champaign from Rolanberry Fields is in the Northeast corner of the map.

I'm pretty sure the prize is the same as the other quests: A bunch of Gysahl Greens and being told the record time someone made that run in, as well as how long you took.

      Windurst > San

My first attempt, I missed the time by about 15 seconds. I could've made it without riding gear:

-A 10 second period where I had choco on autopilot while I was stuffing my face with food. >.>

-I was far from efficient in my riding.

You do not need choco riding gear and if you rely on it, then it will only say a lot about player skills. Trust me, it can be done with more practice and experience. I have a friend that can make it from San to Bastok in under 5 minutes each and every time without a choco riding gear.

snowball you came to the right place. i do this quest every week. if you are fast enough you get a dragon chronicles scroll (free exp). now to explain about the quest; where you have to take the choco to depends on what day it is in game, lightsaday, darksday, iceday,etc... you can be asked to go to windurst, sandy or jueno. to sandy is the quickest and easiest. this can be done in under 19:00 minutes. 18:53 is my best fron sandy to bastok way i like to do it. you have to stay on the choco to complete this quest. you will ride up to the gate that the chocobos usually come out from. when you get to the correct spot your choco will freeze in that spot, and you will get a message, thanking you and it will give your time and the current record holder. if done in the time limit you get scroll. going to jueno gets a warp scroll. now as for going to windy, yes you can make it there in less than 30 minutes without losing your choco. there are some shortcuts. youll have to go to each zone and study the maps and find them. ive made it in 28 minutes. the route from bastok to windy, north gusta, south gusta, konstacht highlands, pashow marshlands, rolanberry fields, saromouge champlain, meriphataid mountains, tahronghi pass to sarutabuta.
hope this helps and good luck.

Wow! So, you're saying that if the quest was done on any day which is different from - lightsday, iceday, or darksday, (I don't know all the diferent days names, so please forgive me) then you have to travel a different route from what you have already explained?
I was never aware of this. Well....... I AM new to the quest, so you'd have to expect that of me.

          Double Post Edited:
Thanks a lot for the help everyone.
I have read all your posts, and I think I will be fine with this quest now

wait, you get the same time limit whether you ride to sandoria or windurst o_O? windurst would take twice as long.

~Minnime~, could you please tell me the correct spot that you stop at, in order to get the message which thanks you?

I need to get this right, so that can I get back on time with my chocobo.

just ride up to the gate like you were going to ride thru the gate. has to be the gate that the choco comes out of, if you were leaving town. gate at bastok is all the way on the far end of the map if you look closely. broke my own record 1851 now.

Re: Needing Help With The Chocobo Quest In Bastok.

Didn't mean to suggest that it was impossible to do it without riding gear, just that someone starting out probably wouldn't make it without it. And Bastok -> Jeuno is farther than San d'Oria -> Jeuno, I think...

Anyway, thanks for the info, I couldn't find much when I searched before, usually just a brief description of the update that quest was added in. Sounds fairly worthwhile once you're good at it, and a single green makes a lot more sense as a consolation prize than a quest reward, all things considered.

As for shortcuts... yes, indeed there are. Going by the lake in La Theine is particularly important for making good time from Sandy to Jeuno. Just be aware that there are often obstacles not detailed on the map. Windy in particular seems problematic here, each of the zones from Windy to Jeuno are rough terrain, often littered with debris. Even East Sarutabaruta is much more of a pain to proceed North through than South.

Re: Needing Help With The Chocobo Quest In Bastok.

Well, I did this quest for the first time yesterday, but all was to be in vain as I ended up going to the wrong exit when I got there, *sigh!*
But also, I got the NPC asking me to venture from Bastok to South Sandy Gate instead of at windurst. I went to North Sandy instead. I guess I lost my footing somewhere. I wouldn't mind trying again though.

Can I just ask though...... is this one of those quests which will only run for a certain length of time, or is it an ever lasting quest?

Also, is there a time limit for this quest or not?

There are two relevant time limits, as far as I can tell. One, assuming you're level 20+ with no riding gear, you have 30 minutes until your chocobo takes off on its own. Each +1 to chocobo riding adds a minute to that. If you're level 15-19, you get 15 minutes, period. Two, there appears from the site linked that there's a threshold time for each route that determines whether you get the named prize or gysahl greens.

first of all i keep seeing riding gear mentioned, if you have to use riding gear to make the trip without losing your choco, you are not going to get a reward for doing this quest. you only get a reward for making the trip in a certain amount of time. bastok to sandy or other way is 20 mins or less. the trip from sandy or bastok to windy can be made in less than 30 minutes. 29 or less i think to get the reward. you do not need riding gear to do this, just practice. this quest is repeatable once a week after the tally. yes you can say no thanks you have better things to do if you dont gte the route you want with no penalty.
