  • english keyboard shortcuts for japanese letters?

    just wondering, i have a eng keyboard, and i cant figure out how to do some of they keyboard strings for letters, such as w. how do you make the curved one they use in the faces, as well as the A and upside down triangle. is thier a keyboard shortcut like using < doesnt bring up the arrow, but putting in <- makes a small arrow. if this is too confusing, sorry ><
    example:
    ←for <-
    or ゜for ’

    Type きごう and you'll get tons of misshapen characters.

      You need to have a custom dictionary loaded. There's one if you search for it on google called kaomoji. Basically, soundex of awa, kao and kaomoji (followed by hitting the space bar) will bring up menus of various unicode symbols and custom kaomojis (japanese versions of emoticons)

        assuming that u have IME running already (let us know if u don't), for 2 examples u brought up, here's how;

        ← : "yajirushi" or Japanese for "arrow."

        ω : this is the lower case Greek letter "Omega." u can either simply type "omega," or "girisha" (ギリシャ for "Greece") to bring up the list of all the Greek letters.

        but in an actual typing, u should have dictionaries installed like Aeni mentioned. here's a quote of my old post explaining what it is;

        those r called Kaomoji, or face emote, and r not one symbol, but rather strings of characters, whether Japanese or not.

        many of the characters used r indeed non-Japanese. one in ur example, ψ, is a Greek letter "psi." also, д, as u'd see in ('д'), is a Latin alphabet of "D."

        in actual typing, it's too much of a hasle to type them separately, so we use dictionaries. a dictionary file for IME is just a list. when properly registerd, it adds more "choice" in the list of possible Japanese characters. (the list doesn't have to be all Japanese - can register anything of any combination as long as IME is capable of handling those characters.)

        thus, if I wanna type (・∀・),

        1. type kaomoji (かおもじ)
        2. hit space
        3. keep hitting space till i get what i want from the list
        4. hit enter to select it

        it's possible because i have dictionaries registered.

        now, i don't know if Global IME is capable of taking any additional dictionaries, but u can try taking the dictionary file here (Japanese site);

        http://www.odysseygate.com/ff11/ime/
        the link above still works. also, s-e has their own dictionary files available for download (this one may not work w/ the English windows);

        let us know if u still have any confusions.

            Loading dictionaries isn't as easy as you'd think. ^^

              youre getting らもいきち(ramoikichi) from typing おめが(omega) then hitting space?

              I really dunno how youre getting hira from hira....either youre not doing it right or maybe you dont have the right dictionary installed?

                  .lzh is a compressed file. it's not an uncommon format (while .zip is far more popular in US, .lzh is more popular in Japan.), and apps like WinRAR is able to decompress it. try google-search for "lzh" and it should come up w/ other free softwares, if u don't like WinRAR. and unlike POL's, what u get from odessygate is in .txt format.

                  .dic is, as u can guess, is a format for IME dictionary files. like i said above, i don't know if those IME w/ English Windows can take it, so i'm afraid someone else must follow up on this.

                  EDIT: just did some quick search, and i found that Global IME can't take .dic files. although Global IME and those IME coming standard w/ Win XP and 2K r different things, given the nature i must say it's not likely that the latter can take it either.

                    hmm those special characters worked as soon as I installed IME. the dictionary tools help you make an already-made emocons but shouldn't be required if you simply want those characters.

                    ← → I use <- -> it works too.

                        To use .dic files I had to go into my language bar settings, and into the properties of me selected IME. Under one of the tabs you can load custom dictionaries as .dic files. If you click the buttom with the book and box you can load up .txt files.

                          *sigh* ok, i downloaded both the .txt file and the .dic file. i got winrar and unzipped everything, but i can't figure out where to load these language files. i looked under languages under the Control Panel, but i did't see any "IME" anywhere. what am i doint wrong?

                          i saved both the .txt and the .dic under My documents, if that matters.

                          i hope my pc can run them. i'm on english windows.

                            If what u saying are what i am thinking, first u need to enable japanese input and to do u may need the window xp cd. after that u may see a small icon on the bottom right for the lang, click it and choose show the lang bar after that enable it to japanese. after that from there i think is the IME thing and upload the file onto it ;p i cant remember lol but i remember there is a jp web that teach u how to do it

                              Similar question I guess. What are the keyboard shortcuts to switch IME modes in the Japanese PS2 version when using a US keyboard? I got locked into only being able to switch between hiragana and katakana the other night when trying the usual Windows shortcuts of Alt, Shift, or Ctrl plus Caps Lock.
