I’m not saying I only play games with girls in them. I’m only trying to point out just how many games have female main characters.

So anyways, I finished Final Fantasy 6 and X-2 (along with all the other ff titles except 3) and I decided to try out ffxi. Ever since that fateful day, I’ve been picked on, made fun of, and been called names. I’ve had to endure constant sarcastic remarks from my ls and I’ve been hit on by complete strangers who didn’t even ask whether I was a guy or girl. I had one person accuse me of being gay, and I had another accuse me of harboring sick twisted fantasies

Why? Because my character is a chick, but I’m not. And why is my character a girl you ask? Cuz if I’m gonna spend the next 800+ hours staring at the same toon, it had better be something interesting to look at. I dint know the rules were somehow different in online games, but even if I did, I still would have chosen the same one.

I really don’t get it. There are lots of games with female main characters in them. I don’t pose as a girl, and I don’t lie to people telling them I’m something I’m not. I’m not gay or a pervert. I just like the way my character looks.

…But what really gets on me is that one time I got hit on by a mithra

Anyone in the same boat as me, or am I all alone in vanadiel? lol
It's really because this time around you chose to play the opposite gender, whereas in offline games, you aren't given the choice. Some people seem to think that gender should be enforced in online games, like in Ragnarok Online. Don't ask me why.

Pick whatever sex you feel like, just don't get pissed when I refer to you as a she instead of he. I just find it easier to say she for female characters but I think I will start calling everyone "dudes".
        Have fun.

Choose Mithra, then you at least have a creditable reason....

Re: my toon's a chick... but i'm not

I have always played female characters in my MMORPG's. I don't know why, I am just attracted to them, I also like to RP and it's easy to get into it if you are playing something that you are not in reality.

As for the whole phobia of being accused of being gay for playing a female character, ummm get over it. I for one am a homosexual and would never think of hitting on someone in game. Why? Because it's sad, not to mention that most gay men would rather just go to a gay bar or one of those online hookup sites if they wanted a cheap thrill. I also have met very few gay men that play online games, so for all you homophobics, have no fear. Online gaming is not very popular in the gay community.

So in the end, it doesn't matter what gender you play, people need to get over it and just enjoy their game instead of freaking out over insignificant details such as who the person behind the screen is.

Yeah, I still have to tell people I'm a guy... and they've been playing about as long as I. Soooo yeah, you're going to have to deal with it for pretty much ever.

                Essential Learnings

Girls dont play video games... havent you guys learned that yet. J/K!

Guy on our server fell for this girl, who played a girl character.
Girl posted a picture on ffxiplayers.
Guy spent months around this girl, and eventually started talking about meeting irl.
Girl gets quiet until one day it comes out that the girl is a guy (huge shock) and the picture was his irl GF.

Re: my toon's a chick... but i'm not

Well, the old myth of online games not having girls I do know is false. Even with rl female players the gender they choose is not always their own as well. When you play as a Cross Gender Character there are a few rules to it. There is nothing wrong in role playing as if you were female, but if a person does try to hit on you they have to be set straight right then and there. If you egg it on then anything they say to tease you was brought on yourself.

When I played Diablo's I had chosen a female character as well. They were fine to believe whatever gender they thought I was, I did RP as if I was female but the instant they try to take it to RL dicussion I either set them straight that I was a guy or made clear any RL edenver was never going to happen (Depending on their behavior).

The major thing of it is to never lead them on, if they are to think headed to take the hint then there isn't much you can do they guy will just make himself look like an idiot. In either case just be aware that in MMOs revealing your real gender when it isn't that of your character (or toon) can be risky, but if the situation comes to the right point then you will have to reveal it and as long as you didn't intentionally egg anyone on then you can't really be faulted for it.

Lol, hell in diablo's I even told the guy that I was a guy. He didn't even believe me, he thought I just said that to get rid of him. I even sent him a photo of myself to prove it and he thought the photo had to be a brother or something. Someone that thick headed all you really can do is make it clear that you'll never have a desire to met him in rl and then just enjoy the gifts he gives you.

On FFXI though I went with hume and it was because the character looked a lot like a self that I see myself as (or reflective self). It's actually my avatar here, I don't see it as boring. Also because it is of my reflective self I can enjoy it as an escape when I need to take my mind away from reality, in order to solve a problem in reality.

Re: my toon's a chick... but i'm not

Several male characters on Middie are played by IRL females. Why? Because they don't want the kind of unwanted attention you get playing a female character in a game populated by over-sexed males drowning in their own testosterone.

Only thing I will add is this: you chose the path, you have to deal with the consequence. Sure, it's wrong for people to discriminate on choices you made, but on the flipside, you really were asking for it with that choice you made.

A lot of girls who play FFXI lean towards being a taru anyways (and unless ur a pedophile, u won't hit on a taru).

It isn't so bad.....the people have to be messed up if they hit on video-game characters. And,you can at least still play.I'm a Dvd-rom and graphics card short.

I wish I had selected a female char, as subligar is not something I can stand to use on a male char. Outlandish armor in general looks better on females as is the far less restricted fashion for them in RL.

I think it is different from an offline game where you play a female character because people tend to put more of their identity on their online character. It is not like when you speak something in game, it is the character that is speaking. It is you, through the 3d model. So in lots of ways you ARE your char. That why some people bother with Cross Gender characters.

I say whatever, play what you want I don't care. People who are playing because they are searching for a companion are really doing it in the wrong place. FFXI is like those nightclubs full of men and with only a couple of womans.
