      Thanks for the responses/advice...

I may try leveling up BLM a bit I suppose, just seems to me that mage types are slower to level off the bat.

From my experiences in both EQ and WoW I am skeptical to join any guild/ls that publicly spams they are looking for members. There are exceptions, but 9/10, if not more, are just lousy guilds where you cant go more than 10 minutes without hearing "can ne1 give me som money"? Perhaps that is different in FFXI then the two games I previously had exp in.

For now im just taking it easy. Im level 8, did the first mission, and just spent some time chilling doing some fishing. Got a ton of kelp but no skillups heh. Sold enough crystals to get me my level 7/8 sword/armor (except for the whole no leather leggings on sale in AH or shop obstacle). Having a great time thus far.

You rarely hear this. It might become popular when Xbox comes out though

FFXI has the best MMORPG community, said by almost anyone who played it and any other game.

In EQ, I pretty much looked forward to just seeing new areas, experiencing that area and what not. But I also payed much attention to the End Game aspec of EQ too, though I only made it to Solusek Ro before I left, I thought it was the only thing you really have going for you in that game (least when I left). Now, in FFXI, there are a lot of things besides End game. There's a story within every mission. And I think you would enjoy that too, besides just having an end game. Quests are interesting to do too, some give you money, some reward equipment or furniture for your mog house, and some just have some great back drop stories that I think is very neat. Plus cutscenes are fun to see ^ ^.

Again, like what everyone says, just hang in there, see what job you think is fun, and just enjoy it.

Out of the two other towns it is... Bastok isn't too bad, at least Bastok Market should be decently full.

                  Re: FFXI feels so empty...

I kinda know how you feel, I just started the game myself.
Played EQ2 for almost a year and then they "revamped" it and
I thought if I have to learn the game again might as well learn something new.
I really like this game so far, get to level 12 or so and go to valkrum dunes
and look for a party, always people looking there, may take a while but you will
get one. i play on shiva server and teh only problem I've run into so far is
the language barrier really late at night. but its not a big deal.

For all you new players out there, Japan's midnight is at 11am EST. Plan your parties and search comments accordingly!

I always just use the same comments, no matter what time it is. There's JPs wanting parties at any time..so..yeah. lol

As for search comments, I like to put as much stat info as possible. That way if there's others seeking of the same job, the leader will think you're better at the game (or something) 'cause you made a 'complex' search comment.

                      My comment is usually:

                      @[ie. 3000] MP: 212 MND: 36
                      (/tell) ⇒ (/invite)
                      私は日本語まだへたです。ごめんね

Something like that is always nice. (You'll have to leave the JP out, if you're using NA client) Not to mention, you'll know if you're getting into a good party or not if the leader /tell's you first before inviting.

I never got to really finish my post because of work, but I actually like partying
with people from where ever, I love the diversity of this game, after I left EQ2
I did not go for wow like so many others, but in EQ2 I played on Highkeep server
which had a decent amount of HK and JP players and it was alyaws a great learning experience, I enjoy the diversity this game offers, its why I picked it.
it helps keep the game fresh. some JP players do not speak a word of english and rather play with JP players, and I respect that, I feel more comfortable playing with english speaking players, but sometimes you have to make the best of a situation and thats when things get really fun. I can actually read a little bit of hiragana but not enough to make a difference, but a good party will know what to do despite the odds and make the best of it, its what I love about this game so far, I'm still a noob but I'm enjoying myself so far.

                          Re: FFXI feels so empty...

The other day, I was playing, and I ended up in a party with a BLM who knew a tiny bit of english, and spoke mainly spanish. Because of highschool, I know enough spanish to understand basically what they were talking about. Good times though, since I have joined FFXI, I have found helpful and friendly people, who are all in all, just great. I need to update my profile, as I am up to lvl 9 RDM now, but I actually got a LS yesterday. I guess that makes this post on topic...

you say ffxi is lonely, but you never made it to the real partying levels yet (post 15. a lot of jobs/players simply solo to 15)

i was in sandoria the other day, when i saw someone shouting: "new player wants a linkshell." i gave him a linkpearl. i helped him to get to level 18 or so, when he switched to a bigger ls...

once you get above level 15 or so, finding people gets easy. virtually anyone who notices you don't have a linkpearl equipped will offer you one of theirs. a lot of players are eager to make friends with the newbies, but most wait until levels 15+ to do it i think...

Bastok Mines, it is empty. Bastok Port, it's not too empty. I think the issue is, there's hardly any places that are popular in the Gustaberg region. Movapolos hardly has anything in there worth getting excited about. Gusgen has been played out by miners and RMTs. People port to get to Altep and the Kukotz region.

Compare this to Windurst, where they feature unique guilds not generally found anywhere else. Clothcraft. Bonecraft. Culinary. Then you have areas like Toraimorai Canal, heavily camped NMs, the fact that Bibiki Bay and Attohwa Chasm are in the general area. You can go on and on about it. Sky up north and so is Moon. Go to the east a bit for Boyhada and DA.

Maybe better placement of areas and/or zones might balance out or distribute players more evenly.

yes most do wait, because alot of newbs end up quitting or they switch LSs alot, any LS leader doesnt like it when you LS hop too much. Not that you cant have any other LS, but when you have too many it does get hard to know you and how much are you going to contribute back when they do?
