Could PC FFXI ever get graphics update?

I was just reading how theyre making FFXI for Xbox360 and they said it will have improved graphics, is it possible that they can release a patch or something for the PC version to improve the graphics?

I think the game still looks OK, I play it at a very high resolution by changing the res in the registry, but the textures are just too low resolution, I think simply updating the textures would make the game look much better, I think the polygon count, draw distance, etc. is fine, but the textures need some serious work.

In an interview with 1Up, FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka hinted that the PC version of the game may enjoy a graphical update alongside the release of the Xbox 360 version of the game.

1UP: When the Xbox 360 version hits, will a patch be made available for PC players with high-end graphics cards to get similar high-fidelity graphics out of the game? The 360 version's character models look really nice, with deep shadows and rich colors.

HT: Yes, that will be possible, but the kind of video card you're talking about is extremely expensive!

So according to Tanaka, it will be "possible," but it is not yet confirmed.

It could, but SE is too lazy to do that >.> god knows, who would rebuy FFXI just for graphics enhancements?

Well so far, some of them are simple. Draw distance is proven easy as it's already hacked.

But this is really assuming you have a great PC. The 360 is no slouch, and ffxi port to PC isn't the greatest.

I think the main problem is the fact that the port of FFXI to PC is, as mentioned, rather crappy. If SE wrote the program as a pure PC program, not adapted PS2 code, then it'd already look a ton better. 'course, there's no reason that they couldn't revamp the graphics engine entirely anyway. Just they haven't done it as of yet. IMO they probably have a trimmed down team mostly dedicated to generating content on preexisting toolkits, with a large amount of the original programmers having moved on to newer projects. The XBox 360 version is likely blessed with better graphics for advertising's sake, and MS's insistance on improving ports. Until the graphics get to be so comparably bad that they hurt sales, you likely won't see any major revamps on PC. Given the success of Everquest, they're gonna have to get *very* bad looking before that happens.

What are you comparing it too? Most players these days confuse quality graphics with basic shine and gleam. You can see shine and gleam most easily in RFO, but it's also there in L2 and other games. It's basically glitter, which is cheap and shiney. For what SE had to work with FFXI graphics are unsurpassed.

Now if only they would just stop supporting the PS2 we'd see several major improvements. When I run the model viewer in 60FPS my eyes become spoiled, that's what I'd like see the most. Unfortunately if you weren't running the top of the line graphics card everything would lag. Currently weather lags me, and any draw distance above 2 gets me as well. I turn it up to 5 when I want to take nice screenshots.

I have a pretty good PC, Athlon 3500+ overclocked past 4000+ speeds, and a Radeon X800XT PE, 2GB of Ram, etc, so far I've maxed out FFXI as much as I can, and still runs smooth as butter, I didn't know you could improve the draw distance with a hack, is it against the rules to ask how I can do this?

search up FFXIEE i forget the exact name of it. element enhancer or somethin like that. mods can delete/edit my post if they feel its breakin some rule out there

um... considering they bumped up the shadow resolution on characters (check yer shadows. Tha difference is AMAZING) and they smoothed the interlacing issue in the sky it would appear that they are gearing for a higher graphical quality.

If you read some forums on alla...the uncover that this program is bogus, and a wait of money, all the "enhancements" can be easly done in the registry, and the installer for this prgram also is well known spyware.......
