I believe studies showed that a human mind can only maintain peak concentration emersion for about 15 minutes. After that the mind becomes tired and slowly looses focus whether you want to or not.
The optimimal strat is to work for 15minutes, take 5 min break, and continue. Though loosing your train of thought is bigger priority to pass the 15 limit, but it goes to show that you'll not really doing any better if you cram yourself up.
This is a reason why harder isn't always better, many experts do suggest you take lots of breaks, or you'll run yourself nowhere. Especially studying.
Some people need quiet no distraction rooms to work in, other people all but require backround noise. Don't make empirical ideals based on your own habits. The key here is relaxation, and some people have it different.
Blech, I never really trust those studys. There are studies on studies that show a lot of them are bad science (especially the ones in the news)--which are you going to believe? At least I trust myself to make my own decisions.
And aren't you taking this a little too seriously? I'm not turning this into hard scientific data, I'm simply giving a hard line on advice, the way my dad gave it to me. A plan, ideal or not, is usually better than none at all.
I GOT AN IDEA! How about you get together with your friends in final fantasy and STUDY THERE! once you get done reviewing you can just chill out. (Dont take me seriously)

Let's see... double blind tests with possible hundreds of people, or one person that haven't tried something different...
Studies are their for a reason, you can refuse it, but they are there, and usually they help people. Did you know that 98% of your height is determined by genetics. The old tales of "drink more milk!"( which is untrue itself as milk is a medicore calcium/vit drink at best) or play more sports, will not gain you even another inch. And people ARE crazy enough to goto some Ad that will say "increase your child's height by 30%"
You can choose not to change, we do what we want to an extend, but why can't I throw out information to counter yours? I know no less then 5 people personally that can't look at a book without turning on the TV for backround noise. As I said the key here is relaxation, not quietness or distractions.
Perhaps I do sound serious, but then, throwing out data always sounds cold. it's easier to give advice to people or counter argue with things to the point.

You're assuming things again kuu. I didn't go from a 2.3 GPA to 3.7 from not changing what I did. I honestly believe the problem that most students have in the US public school system is laziness. And yes, there is data to back that up if you really care. I don't think there is a secret recipe or some theory to maximize your study ability. It's micromanaging details, and pushing the problem onto something else, and not looking at yourself.
It boils down to looking at what you need to do and work at it with discipline. When there is little else to do (minimal environment) except the task at hand, people tend to do it. That’s how we’re taught to manage people at my office, and it’s that way for a reason--because it works. If you have problems just picking up the work, no amount of advice will help you. A good shove is probably what you need to start, with a decent reward at the end to keep you going.
I don’t disregard studies, but I do look at them with a critical and conservative eye (the basis for all my opinions). They are only as good as the variables they study, and even the supposed baseline that they are comparing to is not always indicative of what you face. In essence, there is no perfect study, they are all flawed to a degree because it’s not humanly possible to consider all aspects. Am I going to say, I’m totally average, all I can do is focus enough to work well for 15min? Hell no, I’m going to try and be better than that, because it's possible to be.
What is the problem here anyway? Did I not answer the OP’s question?
If we don't like something, collectively, if our hatred for it throbs like an abscess beneath every thread, does that mean that they're doing something right?

As hard as it may be, don't take this game or your characters too seriously. I promise you - the guys that really own your account don't.

Actually, situationally, that might not be a bad idea...
I actually have been out of practice on Japanese since I stopped taking classes in it, and it's nice to have a place where I can go and actually chat with people in Japanese to keep my language skills from atrophying. That's kind of a specific example, but basically, I wouldn't discard the notion of studying while connected out of hand.
Japanese players I've encountered so far have been very encouraging of and impressed by Americans who can speak Japanese, and many know English well enough to help when you're having difficulty saying something, even if they aren't comfortable using it normally.
(As a side note, since I've seen complaints elsewhere about an unwillingness from Japanese players to speak in English, let me say as someone who does speak a language I'm learning to native speakers of that language, that it is much more difficult/stressful than I think many take into account. The difference in cultural norms have subtle effects on the way meanings come out, and it's very difficult to be sure your meaning isn't going to come out distorted, sounding rude, etc. I can understand and respect a reluctance to speak a non-native language, even if it seems they speak it quite well.)
Just get together a good idea for a website.
Drop out of school and create the website that will earn you money - while you play ffxi ^^ :D
