Re: The History of Vana'diel Website 100% completed!!!

Nice! I just have to say this site is amazing! Now the experience of playing a game for its story we care so much about can be striped and raped to contain half-truths and opinions. Oh man, I thought working hard to experience the magic of FFXI through effort and with friends would be worth it, but reading it off a website is way better. I mean, you don't just answer confusing parts of the plot or point toward locations of answers, you just do all the work for them, it's awesome. I mean, why read books or watch movies? People can just tell you what happens! And no sense of accomplishment to wait you down. Flawless. Btw, Snape kills Dumbledore. And Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense? He is a ghost.

So like I was saying, you really show how much you enjoyed playing FFXI for its storyline that you ripped it's heart out and pasted it on a website so that people can never feel that joy!

You know what? You know whattt? We should sticky this in a forum that is used by many low level players that have not had the chance to do these things themselves, so the magic of it is totally ruined. So when they watch a cutscene, already knowing what happens they can say "Hmm, ok" or "Hmm, when did it say the Far East declared war on Jeuno? I mean, if that was said I'm sure I didn't miss it... I mean Tenzen even comes back in the end for Apocalyse Nigh, I don't think he would if the Far East and Jeuno were at war... oh well, this website knows best". Man, that's not hypocritical at all. Keep on fighting the good fight. Down with sense of plot, up with spoilers. Thanks for the great site.

                  but can I have some?

oh and since we're playing the sarcasm game...
I love when people complain about spoilers when the entire site has been around for ages and everyone knows it has spoilers but they go ahead and look anyway..
the continue to read even though they have been spoiled then complain about "the heart" of a game when it's just a game and the HEART comes from the interaction with others and the friends there...not what some zilart did in a fake history that you now know and are gonna slit your wrists over..

I think you completely miss the purpose of the website entirely. FFXI's story has so many different branches and history behind it that most normal who've gotten to that part of the game couldn't hope to remember it. It can serve as somewhat of a refresher fro them.

And this site actually can be of use to newer players without ruining the story. You see, the problem with FFXI is that you really don't know much about Vana'diel from when you first start the game, aside from the fact that there was some huge war 20 years earlier (although technically, when you consider the current year in the game right now, it would be more like 200 years earlier, but that's beside the point). Now if you are really taking on the role of a citizen of Vana'diel in the game, then why wouldn't you know about it's history? So the way I see it, as long as you only read from the beginning and stop reading once you reach the end of the Crystal War none of the FFXI's main story would be spoiled (although you'd have to skip the part about he Zilart), if anything you'll walk away with a better understanding of Vana'diel so that you're not wondering what the Hell NPCs are talking about when they briefly reference some event in Vana'diel's history and act as if you know all the details about it. Where's the harm in learning about the Beastmen's reign of terror over the Quon Continent? Or how the Galka were driven from their homeland? Or about the Tarutaru's long journey to what is now Windurst, where they rediscovered the long-lost art of magic? Or about the San d'Oria's conquest throughout the Quon continent and their eventual civil war? Or Bastok's industrial revolution? These are all things that citizens of Vana'diel would know, so there's no reason why players, even new players, shouldn't know this.

Look at the lore stuff... under "About Vana'diel". Not only does it introduce information better, it has more information that than the spoiler-filled site.

The first chapter... Legends of Old starts off with basic myths everyone knows, then not half way though it spoils an entire plot twist that takes up the first 6-8 missions of RoZ and some of CoP. New-player friendly?

I'm sure this site is useful for people who "can't remember the story"(and is too lazy to rewatch the cutscenes, which are all possible). The site isn't even right on somethings... like I said earlier... Far East declares war on Jeuno?

This shouldn't be a sticky in a site for low level players, period. What good is it that a level 10 knows what happens at the end of CoP? To say that is okay is to say the story doesn't matter in the game.

                      Double Post Edited:
And for the love of god, you are level 45. YOU shouldn't be reading this.

What, it still says I'm at level 45? I need to change that.

Anyway, maybe the site has changed since I was there, but I only read about the first few ages of Vana'diel's history, this included the Age of Beasts, the Age of Magic, the Age of Power, the Age of Technology, and the Crystal War. I do not recall reading about anything that could be considered a spoiler. In fact I don't even remember reading about the Far East declaring war on Jeuno as you talking about, although I really don't see why this is too much of a spoiler, I mean what nations in Vana'diel HAVEN'T been at war with each other at one point or another? And yes, you are right about the second chapter of "Legends of Old" spoiling parts of Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promathia, but like I said in my last post, as long as you skip that part, there really isn't too much that is revealed over the next few chapter that you couldn't either hear from some NPC in game or read in the Vana'diel Tribune. And I knew well enough to skip that part when I came to it, I mean the title to that particular chapter, "The Truth," pretty much speaks for itself that it contains some spoilers.

But when it comes to parts of Vana'diel's history that is revealed through Missions, they do keep pretty much all of the detailed information about some historical events that are learned about through different Missions in different sections that cover all that is learned for example. Take the part that speaks of the expedition to the northern lands, which ultimately lead to the beginning of the Crystal War, for example: All it says is that a small group made up of soldiers from all three nations set off to the north lands, two of them supposedly died there, and the rest were found murdered shortly after returning to their homelands. But is that all that happens though, is there more to it? Of course there is, as anyone who's made it to Rank 6 knows. But do they tell you what happened in that particular section? No, they save that for later when the events of that mission are discussed. Another example is former Windurst Optistery Minister, Karuha-Baruha: The only thing that is said about him is that he saved Windurst from the Yagudo invasion by summoning Fenrir, which is hardly a spoiler, as many NPCs in Windurst that you can talk to from practically the moment you first login to the game tell you this. But when it comes to the rest of the details about Karuha-Baruha, they just save that for the section of the site that deals with Windurst's missions.

So you can go on about how this site spoils the game for newcomers as much as you want, but all I know is that I read parts of this site a long time ago and I learned essential information about Vana'diel's history without having any of the storyline spoiled. So don't even tell me what I "should" and "shouldn't" be reading, even if I was still at level 45 you have no right telling me what to do.

edit: btw... I just remember to add this.. your first sentence "look at the lore section of the FFXI page" or whatever...
I literally word for word copied that section and put it in my guide just so I wouldn't be different from the official history.
So you saying it's a "better" version is the silliest thing I ever heard.

edit2: and where the hell on this site does it say "for new players only"?

now on to me replying to your posts, that make me angrier ever time I read them.

Look, I don't know why you have taken it upon yourself to bash my site, but I'm just gonna ask you to stop. You really are taking it too far now. You might as well be insulting me. I don't know how much clearer I can get about this..

                          1. This site was created not for new people, not for old gamers, not for people who don't play anymore, or even people who write fan fics...but for ME. I made it for myself just so I could go back and see all the cool stuff I loved in the game. And if along the way, I happen to get tons of email a day from people thanking me for helping them understand something better, or giving them information they can use for a fanfic, or new players reading it and going "damn this game looks sweet"... that's just a bonus.

                          2. Also, "the site isn't right on somethings?"...

have you played CoP? You do realize there is an entire scene with a ninja telling *spoiler* that the Far east is planning to attack Jeuno becuase the zilart are the ones who are responsible for the emptiness?
IN FACT.. I went to my site, and searched every page for this so called "the far east declares war"...I couldn't find it. The only mention of it, was the CoP walkthrough where it says and I quote ..word for word
"Then it will be time to undertake our most desperate plan. Based on Tenzen’s information, they will invade the city of Jeuno. Liberating the mother crystals is now the only way to stem the tide of emptiness. He agrees, but he cannot return. Not now. Phoenix entrusted him with a final duty. He can hear every voice. The voices of the children he failed to save. If he betrays them here, it will be unforgivable. He will secure the crystals."
That's it..that's all it says on that.

                          3. No where did I says this was for new players... I don't know where you get off saying I'm trying to spoil things for new players. Besides..why would people come to this site unless they WANTED TO KNOW THE HISTORY...
I'm not gonna not tell the COMPLETE history, what the hell would be the point of just retyping the stuff on the FFXI mainpage.
Also, it's not like they couldn't turn away, you don't just read something and then keep reading..and keep reading..
it's not like TV where an image can flash in front of your face and you can't stop it.
Ans speaking of which, as with TV and the internet...
if you don't like the program (in this case the history of the world you're playing in) don't look, change the program, go to another site..
                          etc..etc..
you make it seem like I'm forcing people..or worse tricking people in to going there.

I don't know what you have against me, or how I offended you..
but I'm starting to take this personally, and if you keep flaming this topic (which was made a sticky not by me, but by the site staff), I'm gonna ask they remove your posts. So please, I don't wanna have to write a PM explaining my reasons for it..
so lighten up and enjoy the game, don't worry about my site It'll still get as many hits as it does with or without you.

I kinda figured it was assumed and didn't need to be said, But I've long held The History of Vana 'diel as one of the most important ffxi sites out there. It's an amazing project that has helped me immensely in my understanding and appreciation of the game. Thank you so much, Kerrigan/JadeNightshade/Whatever for providing a valuable service to our community. The only complaint I have is that there is no .pdf version I can print out at work and keep as a reference. Pretty petty, eh?

i don't think I would even know how to do that if I tried...
lol to be honest this all started as an over glorified .txt thing which then I was like "instead of sending people to get it on gamefaqs, I can just make a site...ooh and with pics!!!
needless to say, a year later, 2 website redrafts, and the help of many people who know what they are doing with the technical stuff, we have the site we have today..
                              I couldn't be happier ^^

                                @OP

Thank you, JadeNightshade, for your wonderful History of Vana'diel. I learned a lot about Vana'diel (since I'd forgotten a lot of the scenes over the last 2 years) and it gave me encouragement in my character's progress in FFXI.

                                @general

I realize I'm not like most people because I'll read and watch the same stories and movies over and over again. If a "surprise" ending "spoils" the entire story, then the story isn't worth much to me. It's the telling of a story that draws me in, not the "surprise" ending. For me, the History site is very useful and I don't consider myself lazy not traveling hours on end to various Goblin Footprints around Vana'diel.
