    Re: why did they

At starting levels race plays a big chunk into ability. Just have 1-2 more in a stat then another job can make huge differences. Each race's highest stats works out as follows.

    Galka VIT/HP
    Elvaan STR/MND
    Mithra DEX/AGI
    Taru INT/MP

Elvaan having the highest STR means to Hume and Mithra they have about 2 more STR. That's 25% improvement and at lower levels it really shows. You even seen a LV1 Elvaan WHM cast cure and a LV1 Taru WHM cast cure? The Elvaan will actually crush the Taru in the amount he cures, but Taru crushes Elvaan in how many times.

So yes, at lv. 8 MNK with no subjob you'll notice an improvement in performance with Elvaan over Hume. This difference can also be overcome by supplimenting the difference in other ways, such as food. Being that Elvaan are good a damage they are poor at aim, which Hume will have a one up on just eat something like grilled hare and you should be good to go.

      Re: why did they

I've recently gone and leveled some sub-Lv.10 jobs. In a lot of instances it's like that horrible tedious work you're made to do at work. But just like that same crappy busy work, the more you do it, the better you seem to do at it, and find yourself getting it done quicker.

Well, with Lv.51 job, I've leveled most skills to Skill Lv.50+, and in most instances Lv.100+. So I started leveling MNK for WAR subjob, and my Evasion is cap'd for DRK51, I "power leveled" H2H with my WAR to 50, the only thing I have to level now is Guard skill. So with Jack-o'-Lanterns for Acc+10 I got to Lv.10 pretty quick. I was actually chaining Evens.

However. A character, of any race, with out a subjob, and none of their skills cap'd out may find things pretty slow going. I actually saw a Mithran MNK bite the dust to a Yagudo Intiate the other day. I got off my Chocobo, Raised them, and gave them the 3 Jack-o'-Lanterns I had on me and told them what they do. I got a /tell from her about 30 minutes later with them profusely thanking me. Those 3 Jack-o'-Lanterns should easily get her to Lv.10+ and she can really start having fun.

But I would suggest Jack-o'-Lanterns to all melee under Lv.10~13, and mages should use pies of some sort. I know they can be expensive to somebody who just started out, but you can get your hands on some, or have friends help you out. Just don't find your first guy with their Mentor flag up and beg for money.

                Re: why did they

Yes, for a general choice meat jerky is the best right under Bunny Ball (At least until you reach around 120 attack, 0-120 Bunny Ball is better to bad it's craft only).

At lv. 5 with around 50-66 attack +22% (Meat Jerky) gives back 15 Attack, at +30% (Bunny Ball) gives back 20 Attack. Then at around about lv. 7 with 83 attack +22% is only 18 attack, and +30% is 25 attack. From there till almost lv. 20ish Bunny Ball is better. Then even once you reach around 120 attack Dhalmel Pies are better, and those are sold in Windurst when they are Rank 1.

Unfortunatly since Bunny Ball is a lv. 75 cooking skill getting them is a bit tough, so Meat Jerky wins that fight by default.
