Re: PLayed back in US relase - questions
As to the OP: FFXI is FFXI, love it or hate it, it is what it is. LFP is very much a part of the game, unless you chose to build all of your PTs. However, if you play smart, the negative impacts of long LFPs can be minimized (LFP while farming, if you note that there is a lack of players to build a PT with or an overabundance of your job seeking, use the time for missions or quests instead of sitting around bitching that you have no invite.)
The issue is not survivability, its hate holding as several have stated. At 26PLD/13RDM as a taru, I have 222MP and 352HP before gear (198MP 366HP with /WAR). You have to cure approximately 500 HP to equal the hate of one provoke. The difference in MP between /RDM and /WAR at 30 is not sufficient to make up that differnce. The MP recovery methods you have are not sufficient to ever provide you with the MP to cure 500 HP in the 30 seconds you would have between provokes. Your enfeebles wouldn't land past your solo levels, so all you would gain is insignificant MP, Dispel and Phalanx, Blink and Stoneskin. The damage reduction of Phalanx on XP mobs would be far less than damage reduction from defender--and come later. Dispel might be helpful, but it is would not come until mid-60s and is not significant hate nor is it enough to compensate for the removal of the tanking capacity. Blink might be useful, but you would be better off subbing NIN--same number of shadows, lower cast time, doesn't use MP and is more reliable. Stoneskin, when tanking via cure hate, is stupid as you lose the hate for the dmg taken, but don't lose the HP to cure it back for more hate.
In short: PLD/RDM is for solo, not tanking. Actually try playing the game before you go declaring you will break the mold and be the best player of (insert unique job combo here).
