  • PLayed back in US relase - questions

I am interested in coming back to FFXI after being gone since not long after US release (hit about lvl 40). I have some concerns I would like your input on.

    1. Is the sub job quest still a horrible looking for group for 6 hours nightmare?
    2. Is the mid-level game still floundering in LFG for 5+hours and then having it breakup 10mins into the group?
    3. Has new content been added and has the game received any positive updates to improve it?
    4. Is there still a healthy playerbase?
    5. What is the ratio of JP to EG players typically like - will I run around trying to jabber away with the auto trans (does it work now) for 90% of my playtime?

You get the idea, I don't mean to sound overly negative but I need to know because I simply will not pay fo a game that requires me to spend 90% of my playtime LFG.

I really really want to come back because this game looks and feels amazing but the LFG issue is my biggest deterrent.

    Thanks in advance.

These are just experiences you've had, its different for everybody. Has the game changed in order to compensate? No. Will you have these same experiences again? Maybe. Maybe not.

    3. Has new content been added and has the game received any positive updates to improve it?
Well there was an expansion... not to mention lots of little things. Its only gotten better with age, so I guess everything has been a positive update. Gonna direct you to http://ffxi.somepage.com/links/ where they have listing an info for all the previous updates.

    4. Is there still a healthy playerbase?
    Yes.

Depends on the timezone you regularly play in, but I'd say as far as active accounts go its maybe 50/50.

I simply will not pay fo a game that requires me to spend 90% of my playtime LFG.
    Don't seek. Make the parties.

I don't know how feasible this may be for you, but in my case, I'm starting up at the same time as someone else who I went through some trouble to get able to play (had to actually ship a HDD and an IDE-to-USB cable), and a friend switching over from CoH, so we're going to be doing the static party thing a lot (together with another friend who has been on the game for some time), particularly since two of us will both be playing less than optimal character setups (Tarutaru PLD/RDM and Tarutaru DRK/THF).

IF you`re having issues finding a group, try playing a job that gets invites easily (pld whm rdm brd comes to mind) or just get a static party, its not that easy to get one but if you make shouts in jeuno for a day you will end up finding people who might want to static, and then you can get things started, even with a hard to find group job ^^

Please, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, dont shout for PTs in Jeuno >.> There is enough spam as is you dont need to shout for PTs. Plus, if your really having that much trouble finding a PT, you should make your own. You dont need to shout to make up statics, go to a site that has more active Server Forums (no offence guys ;p) and find some people.

Re: PLayed back in US relase - questions

Just wanted to update as some of my previous comments were slightly frustrated in tone

I got the game installed, updated, char created and in game. I finally understand the controls a bit better and can interact with the game much better now. I hated the graphics at first but fixed up the resolutions etc and changed the registry settings as per one of the tweaking posts. It looks bad to the bone now. I am playing a MNK->WAR to go war/mnk then war->pld for pld/war. I am loving it so far and just going with the flow and enjoying the game world. It is great to be back. I can finally cancel my WoW acct.

Thx for all input - look for more "twekaing" questions in future

The PLD/RDM will be tanking (and will probably get one-shotted more than a few times) but basically relying on taru's natural MP advantage, ignoring MP+ equip and getting as much Vit+ as possible. And yes, the player does full well expect to get laughed at by standard parties. Again, part of why we're going static.

No i asked him the question.

The problem I see with that, and trust me I dont care cause Im not being affected in any way, that he will have trouble keeping hate plus he loses some of teh better skills from WAR especially after getting defender and warcry. /RDM will have a slightly larger MP pool, true, but Id expect hed have maybe 200? MP at lv 30 ish... thats just a guess though and i dont trust stat calcs of any sort. It takes 24 MP along for a Cure II and 46 MP for a Cure III... Hes gonna need to spend a lot of money on drinks.

And even if he does keep his MP up, PLD/WAR still have hate issues sometimes with prov so you're going to want a THF to SATA at teh very least.

Definatly more then 200 MP. Tarutaru's MP with jobs like PLD when coupled with a Mage one is still quite good, almost like it being a mage job. At lv. 30 it's more like being around 360ish or 400ish, about what you'd see a WHM no sub have at that level.

As far as hate problems it's less then you think as long as the WHM knows it's a PLD/RDM or PLD/WHM then just keeps an eye on helping them heal when they have trouble executing. It even relieves it some on WHM in that the WHM only has sustain the PLD so a lower Cure spell on the PLD is all that's needed. In effect the PLD gains more of the WHMs healing responsibilities and the WHM is able to assist in other ways such as dealing out refresh's, regen's, paralyze, slow, erase, and what other effects that could hinder the party's performance.

The only trouble I've seen a PLD/WHM (PLD/RDM to an effect) have hate problems is when a RNG does a powerful hit which is generally the same trouble PLD/WAR has also. The bonus though is that the PLD/RDM is much more capable of sustaining a person if they get hate with the actual intent of getting hate back so healing spells of greater hate effect are likely to be used, after which once PLD/RDM has re-established the hate the WHM can patch up who ever needs it after.

Besides that if just looking at EXP parties a PLD/??? would only need a min. of 200 MP to acomplish what I stated. The Tarutaru's crazy boost of MP allows them to do much more then that, and able to get many more flashes off to help further improve their hate control. The debate of PLD/WAR and PLD/WHM has been debated a lot and in many situations the end result usually states PLD/WHM works best for Tarutaru, but isn't as likely to work for other race choices.

I dunno. Depending on the DD and how well everyone is equipped i still think itd be pretty hard to hold consistant hate. And as I said, 200 was just a guess >.> I mean, its a nice amount of MP, but if you have a DD that cant take the hits or you cant get the cure spell off on yourself to keep hate it might cause some problems.

Correct in cases of monsters like spiders doing thier syckle slash PLD/WHM and PLD/RDM may have trouble if a RNG/NIN who lost his utsusemi or RNG/WAR. In that case is has a potential of being suicidal for them. Which just means choosing the monster you fight more wisely (There is multiple options for the same level ranges). Like I stated the WHM only has a need to assist the PLD then if the PLD is unable to get the cure spell of on himself correctly for whatever reason with a lower Cure spell. If he ends up loosing hate then a quick flash will be enough to get it back till he gets his cure going right again.

Outside of a special like Syckle Slash if the monster were to go for say the RNG or DRK and say the PLD doesn't have flash, then they just focus a Cure II on that person that's given is going to get hit. That way it helps him to get hate again and basically nullifies damage done to the other person.

This idea and technique was even further expanded on in that PLDs get to use the Curaga Earrings. What better way to build a ton of hate then to do a Curaga on a party after a decent damaging AoE attack. In this effect though is sort of were PLD/WHM has more advantage than PLD/RDM though.

I know that higher lvl PLDs can keep hate pretty well thanks to an old friend of mine that always kept hate when skilling up or doing various odd jobs, but because of the availability, or unavailability for that matter, of some good JAs it seems itd be harder to hold hate with at least some basic tools (Prov) even with healing of others/yourself. But trying to hold hate in a higher lvl exp PT is different... if a DD lets off a nice Spinning Slash or something and it wasnt on you, have fun getting hate back >.>

To be honest it doesn't sound like you would enjoy the game, but if you are, that's great.

The horrors of LFG is still everpresent, and really hasn't changed a bit since NA launch. If you first quit not too long after NA launch, I'd say the problem has gotten worse due to a more "elitist" attitude that is more prevalent today, which wasn't the case back in the olden days.

Of course if you choose to play some InstaInvite(tm) job like BRD or RDM, completely disregard everything I said since you'll rarely LFG for long.
