Re: To those affected by Hurricane Katrina

Here in the U.K. we often hear about these things happening around the world, from watching it on the news on T.V. so I guess it's hardly surprising that they keep us all up to date on the international goings on.

A lot of people must be really devastated. I can never really imagine what they all must be going through at times like this.
We never get any hurricanes in the U.K. which is why I can't really feel their pain.
Though I don't really know why we don't get it as bad, over here. (I guess I should count myself lucky though)

I was having a discussion about this hurricane yesterday with my mum, and I said to her, why do they always have to give them names? I can't quite understand it really.
It sounds a rather silly idea from my point of view.
They might as well just call them Hurricane A, Hurricane B, Hurricane C e.t.c.

So why DO they have to give them all names anyway?
    :cool_shad

They give them names so we can look back and say Hurricane Isabel knocked out my power for 2 weeks, instead of saying the huricane on September (i think) of 2002 knocked out my power for 2 weeks, and its harder to remember numbers.

Yeah.. It's just easier that way.. Althought the onyl hurrican I can remember was Andrew. That was back in 95 I think.

Re: To those affected by Hurricane Katrina

Yeah, giving the hurricans a name makes them easier to identify. It for us to better associate them. Useless info but before Hurricans when they started getting named were only female names, was debated as being sexist (Well duh, their defending excuse that their destructive nature matches what a female can be like at "that time" in their menstrual cycle).

Anyway after losing that debate the Hurricans/Tropical Storms now get named interchanging from male and female names. I know there was some rules into which the next one is named, a whole setup to be in fairness. Something like 1 year is all male names then 1 year all female can't remember the specifics, been so long since I had that class and didn't really pay a huge amount of attention.

Anyways, hope they get everything in order there as quick as they can. Hope they get those levies fixed otherwise the area is just going to keep filling with water.

I think they alternate male female and go through the alphabet. I also think they name tropical storms which is why it seems to jump through the entire alphabet rather quickly.

first of all, it's boarded, not borded

secondly, seeing as they are 10+ feet underwater, wtf is a board going to accomplish?

                third, way to be racist.

I can't believe people would loot items and steal after a disaster aftermath... that's pretty low. Luck to the people that got served, I'll actually pray. (...seriously)

Looting after a disaster is quite common. Chaos brings out the worst in people sometimes.

If looting as all you heard then you don't know the worst of it. The rescue attempts to move everyone from that Stadium they had to stop because they had gun fire that seemed to be directed at the helecopters going there. Many gangs are going rampant hijacking people vehicles, or robbing people at gun point. One of the Buses heading to a hospital to transfer patients out of there even got hijacked by civilians and forced to transport them out, the patients they had to load who they could into the isles of the buss.

I heard not only is gun fights a problem, I read on CNN.com /Sniper Fire/ was fired twice from two different locations onto a hospital evacuation procedure-in-progress. Satan's torture is too good for people who would fire Sniper Rifles at wounded half-dead innocent victims of a natural disaster beyond their control.
