lol for some reason i dont see a dif between HD tv and just tv, my dads tv is HD and mine id well not and even the shows that are in HD look the same to me. Not that it really makes a dif how a game looks really does not mean how good it is i mean look at tetris i could play that no matter how it looks, even the old DK game where you need to climb the ladders and jump over the stuff is still tons of fun and it looks likr crap

The difference should be quite noticable...

But having a HDTV won't automatically make everything look better; the input source has to be good as well...

in the case of the HD shows you watched, if they're off cable or some such, there could be issues with the channel, such as poor compression and other stuff, which end up mitigating the effect of the HD.

Really though, if you can't tell the difference between a clean 480p source and a 720p source, I guess you either need your eyes checked, or your the type of person that can see a difference but doesn't think the difference is anything to crow about... maybe because you were expecting more?

But if you really care to see the difference, just find someway to output your computer videocard out to a normal TV, and you'll see how much of a blurry mess lower resolutions will make a higher resolution source.

It's rare but there are bad HDTVs out there just to make money off the HDTV name. Or even "HDTV ready"

There are very obvious reasons HDTVs cost so much, because they do have supeior things. It's like saying why a crappy dell monitor 21" doesn't look the same as my 17"LCD.

Some things that'll kill HDTV would be having a 100:1 contrast ratio, which will look way pale compare to a nice 500:1

contrast ratios, but normally when they are high, it washes out colors--it doesn't make them bolder. Contrast ratios are also not measured to a universal standard, so it's all just marketing hype.

And yes while having all high contrast can wash out, you're assuming the source is bad and can't handle the color range.

Watching a VCD with many blocky residues on a 500:1 is way bad, but on a blurry TV looks nicer... That doesn't mean watching a nice DVD movie on 500:1 will have the same residues.

heh, I dont care what the TV has as long as it has the digital connection for my PC, and its 52" or higher....I will be happy ^.^

It's quite possible your not watching a HDTV channel. There is a HUGE difference in between the 2. We had ESPN and then we had them add on ESPN HD. BIG difference, especially in football season!! We had a very high quality 36" tv before we bought our HDTV. I gave my daughter my yr old tv and bought a 61". I didn't think that I would see much of a change except for size......and then I got it all hooked up. I kick myself now for waiting as long as I did. Thin tiny screen on the wall and a nice stereo system hooked up....its like going to the theatre without the hassle. Kind of a bad thing really....now you never need to leave the house! LOL

You should watch Conan O Brien on HD. I mean, you can actually notice that his hair is really red -.- I curse myself for not having things such as this sooner. In any case, I'm planning on getting a TV input and lotsa ram for my computer, so I can see if it is usable as a HDTV.

Try watching ESPNHD then switching to the regular espn channell. Then switch back....the difference is a lot more noticable when you compare it like that. Trying to decide if I want to upgrade to HD source after I kick this last roomate out. Kind of hard to say since theres only a few channels that continuously show HD shows and I'm usually at work in the evening and miss most everything anyway....Maybe when they put out HDDVD...errr I mean BluRay disc...no wait HD-DVD, oh no now its BluRay again....

LOL I love my HD channels and don't mind the few extra bucks for them. The difference is worth it. The problem is that in summer we hibernate in the rooms with a/c and the living room is not one of them. So the tv gets little use and usually only in the late evenings. When you're paying $170 a month on cable/internet, it is very annoying when you can't enjoy it as much as you would like.

Note: This house is an old Victorian home that we are working on. Radiator heat hence no a/c.

HD should be in 16:9 widescreen ratio, not the square 4:3 of normal TV. The res is litterally more than twice as sharp. Even dvds are not sharper than HD broadcast.

The only reason I could fathom an HD broadcast, on an HD TV not being noticably better is if you use a bad HD TV which is not the resolution it is supposed to be, or a poor quality connection e.g. composite, running a connection through a switchbox. You really must make sure all their stuff is putting out HD in purity, adherent to the HD specs. Some TVs say HD ready, but it doesn't mean they are HD, or the signal they get is HD.

HD is not a subtle difference. Either the equipment setup they are using isn't up to par, or your vision is bad. There's no way I could understand how someone could not notice it.

Yeah, HDTVs exceed the Resolution DVDs have. When the HD-DVDs are out you'll be able to compare and see the difference better. Heh, a 52" screen, go for a powerful HD projector or an LCOS. I actually like the LCOS definate difference from the LCDs, well if you are going 40" or higher (or was it 32").

i think the real improvement here will be the performance of the game

square didnt plan dynamis too well, my bud has a geforce 6800 yadda yadda 2gb or ram and a 4ghz processor and he still gets 9/10 fps in dynamis with a full alliance whacking at a mob

sure he plays on a super high res and has all the max settings, but still?
