I didn't actually select Windurst. When beta arrived, I knew what race and what job, but had no idea about the country selection. So I called my sister. She came and picked Windurst because she liked all the trees. Just happened to turn out that I loved the town. So when I started retail, I started in Windurst.

As far as quests: YES. You can do quests in any town, and become a Hero to that town with all the quests you do. My home town is Windurst, but I actually gained Hero fame in Sandy before Windurst. (I've done about 50 Tiger Fang quests. Upped my fame big time.)

I know people in my linkshell that have Hero fame in all three starting countries.

I think the best town is Bastok, but that's because I'm Bastokan and Hume. It seems like the easiest place to begin the game, because the area is quite easy to navigate, the enemies aren't too tough, and there are plenty of ways to make gil. Bees, anyone? Plus, leveling up on Vomp hill is a snap. And an added bonus: Getting to Valkurm is easiest from Bastok.

South Gustaberg -> North Gustaberg -> Konschtat Highlands -> destination!

West Ronfaure -> La Theine Plateau -> destination!

Personally, San d'Oria is the best. King Ranperre's Tomb is a great place to level from 9/10-12/13. And no one is really ever exping there, except for the high levels. There is also a PLETHORA of quests that can be done between 1-10 to raise your fame to rank 5-6 or so. The Rabbit Hide quest and the Bat Wing quest are great ways to get on your feet in Vana'Diel.

The missions are also easy. I got to rank 3 at level 20. And I did 1 through 2-2 all under level 17.

Yeah, I was going to say it's much easier to get to Valkrum from Sandy. That's the only thing I Dislike about Windurst. That annoying freak'n boat ride. But I level in the Maze of Shakrami until Lv.14-15 range, then spend the next 5-6 levels as a guest in Sandy.

Of course my Airpass makes it easy to just start in Windy, hit the ship, and then walk. But I just set up camp in Sandy for the time I'm there.

I didn't mean in the manner of map count. I mean in ease. North Gustaberg and Konschtat highlands are fairly easy to traverse, and you have lots of room to run in case there's a monster that will aggro you. Coming from San d'Oria, you have to go through that damn maze of crevasses in the ground at La Theine, and when you get to Valkurm, you have to run through the high level monster area with lots of Goblins, then through the tunnel with the sand bats. It's much more of a hassle for low level characters to come from Sandy.

Just pick whichever looks best to you.

Going from Bastok or San'dOria to Valkurm Dunes is definately easier than going from Windurst to Valkurm Dunes.

While I respect your opinion, I am a biased, ignorant elitest . La Theine is virtually empty. And if you have a map , it's obvious that all you need to do is head south from West Ronfaure and take the pass between the southwest crag and the mountain. Konschtat, for the matter, isn't hard either. But the Aumflung ( spelling ? ) pass has goblins lurking around every corner.
Silly Bastokan. One day I'll make you pay.

And sides, you're better of soloing up to level 12 or so; that way you can skip the Lizards which the absolutly worst exp in the game.

I would suggest bastok, as it's very newbie friendly.

Sandy is competitive but the forests will give newbies more trouble then bastok's open scenery.

                  Bastok also has korroka.

Windy is just terrible to newbies. The zones are annoying to navigate, they'res a lot of walking to anywhere, and lack of people to xp.

I remember one person hated windy so badly until we told him you can actually warp between zones...not so obvious to learners.
