i was wondering if you could use a prepaid mastercard to pay for the monthly fee.

As long as it's a credit card, it will work. It doesn't matter if it's a debit credit card, a secured, or unsecured credit card. They just need a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, AMEX to charge at the beginning of each month.

If you go this route, make sure you have enough on the card for a few months of payment. It's a royal pain to forget and log in to find that your bill isn't paid and there is no ffxi for you today!
