S-E implemented both Convert and Refresh quite a long way after FFXI was released in Japan. The original red mage concept had very few support abilities.
In fact, red mages have had their spells tweaked quite a bit over the years:
- Red mages used to be able to cast Cure 5
- Red mages used to be able to cast Regen II (and in fact, white mages were NOT able to cast Regen II when the game was released).
- Refresh, Phalamx, and Convert were relatively late additions, after S-E realized what a useless job RDM had become.
RDM used to be basically just a WHM without AoE spells, gimpy nukes, and a half dozen flashy enspells that did nothing in XP parties. The RDM you see today bears zero resemblance to the "old school" concept of RDM in FFXI... and it's a darn good thing too.
