  • One last set of questions before I go..

Sorry for killing you guys with questions, but I am buying the Vana'diel collection on the 16th and I just wan't wait to play it and find out. XD Anyway, yeah, this is my last set of questions... sorry if I'm being a n00b.

    Anyway:
1.) Do people actually role-play on FFXI, or do they just do the whole quick-type, internet lingo AIM chat thing... if you know what I mean.
2.) Since I'm new, what job/weapon do you suggest for me? (oh, and I'm going to be a male hume)
3.) I'm interested in changing my armor as soon as I can, so that I don't have to look exactly like all the other n00bs... About how long should it take me to build up enough money to buy some cool looking armor?
3.) My system specs are as follows: 512 MB RAM, my video card is a 128MB ATI Radeon 9600, and I don't remember how fast my processor is... it shouldn't suck TOO much, right? >_<

not much roleplaying going on. we pretty much speak normally. The way NPC speaks are quitaru normal in game too. But well I won'taru identify them as AIM lingo kinda way ;D it feels better than thataru.

each job will get a starting weapon which isn't too bad for the first few levels. you can always pick new one up for cheap at local NPC weapon store.

lower levels there's not much armor choice. it gets more and more diverse as you get higher and higher.
early levels, it's easiest to sell crystals at the auction house. Also, most junks you get, some of them sell for quite a good price at the auction too. you'll have to check for yourself.

your spec looks good. there's a benchmark you can download from the official site too you might want to play with that.

Lol, the first time I talked to a taru npc it took me like 4 read throughs to figure out what the hell they were talking about.

I agree with jei on the lower lvl armors. If you want to have the best armors you can, then you will be wearing pretty much what everyone else is. Dont worry though, you'll find a way to make a name for yourself quickly enough.

As for what job you should be. Noone can really tell you what you should be except you. Its based purely on what role you want to play in a party: healer, damage dealer, hate controller, tank, or support. I'd do some investigating and then make a decision that you like the best.

How about thief...? Would that make it harder for me to find a party? Do most parties actually want a thief?

Thf get their sneak attac kat level 15, enables them to be a very fearful DD and skillchain closer. Before that they can be pretty lonely. Also there are quite a lot of Thf seeking parties so the competition to get into group is another factor.

thf can be fun, but its gonna be hard to get a party pre 15. after 30, however thf plays an important in parties, with Sneak Attack/Trick Attack. i've seen some thfs do some massive damage...

Re: One last set of questions before I go..

I would recommend against starting as a THF. They're not a bad class, but they're probably the hardest basic class to start as. Main reason is that THF have very specific purposes, outside of general damage dealing, and that is hate control.

THF don't actually get their full ability to do that until level 30 though. It's primarily from the combination of two abilities, Sneak Attack, and Trick Attack. (SATA) You get Sneak Attack at 15, which is a critical hit, multiplied by DEX, that doesn't miss. Catch is, you have to be directly behind the mob for it to work. Trick Attack is a further damage modifier based on AGI, and transfers the hate from your next move onto someone standing in front of you.

While obviously this is more complicated than most low level melee play *anyway*, especially by the time you factor timing, macros, etc into it...it's compounded by the fact that pre-15 a THF is a very weak damage dealer with basically nothing to offer a party. Pre-30 they're good burst damage with Sneak Attack, but don't really stand out. Then it's 33 before they *really* stand out with the Viper Bite weapon skill. At that point...they're one of the best DD in the game. But it's not simple, and it's not easy to start with.

At some points, yes, parties will look specifically for a THF, especially those with a NIN tank. Post-60 most of the time it spreads to THF or /THF to do SATA WS.

If you want to play melee, I'd suggest this route to take.
Level MNK to start with until level 18 or so. They're very strong solo in low levels, and there's one weapon to use, Hand to Hand. As a MNK with no sub, your goal in a party is of single purpose...do a lot of damage. No tricks, no tanking roles, probably not wanted to pull (something that THF tend to do a lot), etc. Point at mob, hit Attack. That'll get you snatched up slower than say, playing WHM would, but if you want to play melee that's the way it goes.
Once you hit level 18, you can now do the subjob quest. Could even go for the gusto and get 20, which would let you go to Jeuno and get your Chocobo license.

Turn around, level WAR/MNK to 37 (likely with a Great Axe primarily). Yes, there are other good subs for WAR...THF, NIN, RNG, etc. /MNK is pretty solid through that range for DD or tanking though. There are also other good weapons, primarily 1h Axe, but Greataxe is pretty good around those levels too.
That will give you a nice WAR subjob for any melee job you might want to pursue, or a good start on levelling WAR in general. It'll also give you a good look at the game from a tanking/melee DD perspective. While there will be jobs to unlock, other subs to level, weapons to skill, and perhaps a chosen main to level from level 1, no time is really wasted. Any tank/DD benefits from a WAR sub at least as an alternate subjob.

If you think magery might be more fun, pretty much replace "MNK" with "BLM" and "WAR" with "WHM" and do that instead =P

RDM is sort of a misleading starting class...it changes over time, and evolves into a support job more than anything. It's also a lot less cut and dried, so being able to adjust to what a party needs is ideal...recognizing that comes from experience.
THF is harder to get started in due to basically being a very weak job until at least level 15. Both, IMO, are fun to level and very good jobs...just benefit from some in-game experience when XPing.

By the time you get to 30, you may find an advanced job that suits your fancy...or not. The "basic" jobs are all very powerful high level.

Re: One last set of questions before I go..

Thf was my first job to lvl. Part of what makes it hard is what makes it great. The learning curve is a lot higher with it. Granted, the learning curve to this game really isnt that huge, but once you hit 15 with thf (and some before that with pulling as was mentioned above) you'll have to actually think and talk to your party to make sure some jackass doesnt voke just as you activate sneak attack. Its not as difficult as being a rdm post 41, but for the lvl it is a job you will have to think at some, no auto-engaging and grabbing a coke. Yes, looking for group from 10-15 can be a little rough, but its not the end of the world and it does get better. Truenoir did give a good outline on a way to get subs lvl'd and such. And I would agree with him if you have a short attention span and dont think you could handle waiting an hour or two on a party invite. (I'm not attacking you, just something to think about) On the other hand if looking for a group for a while doesnt sound too bad, then go ahead and start with thf. Its a great job and I'm confident you'll enjoy it.
