Re: Defending the Sport I Play...

Yeah I agree with Kagetsu, I also dont think tricks was calling FFXI a sport as much as he was just using it as a metaphor to get his point accross. Personally I love FFXI its a great game. I just dont see why some people are worried about others finding out that they play it. Are you just worried about people making fun of you becuase you like to play a game? Thats a pritty stupid thing to be afraid of people making fun of you for. I mean seriously people are going to make fun of eachother no matter what, its just human nature. So why not just let them make fun of you for doing something you like?

I dont exactly shout it from the rooftops, but then I dont go out of my way to hide it either. My roomate knew and gave me endless crap about it, but more as a joke than anything else. My other friends that know dont seem to care one way or the other. They're too involved in NCAA football and Tiger Woods golf to notice (both good games, I just happen to suck at video game football). I really only play late at night when I'm not doing anything else, so as to avoid interfering with real life (always made a point to put RL first). I think I just broke 40 days played and I've been playing since before ps2 release.

Yeah, its hard to explain to your friends that you cant come play poker because your static has plans to XP that night. Its really hard, and I actually tried real hard to explain it to one of my friends wife. Its not a game you can just "Pause" and come back to whenever you want. Everyone that plays the game is a real person. You cant say, stay here while I go play poker...

But I still catch crap about it, its hilarious though, one guy would never stop makin fun of me about it, callin me a "loaf" and everything else. Then he tried WoW. And now he plays WoW just as much as I play FFXI. So now I call him the "Hypocritic loaf."

So the point is, don't try to explain to your friends, they wont understand unless they have actually played an MMORPG.

Yeah, thats one of the reason I never tried to get a static. I never know what I'm going to be doing until I'm actually doing it. If I get 5 minutes heads up before going to play pool or poker or something its a miracle.
For the most part if I'm gonna be a little late to something b/c of ffxi and I tell them its online and I cant just pause it, then they're cool with it and I just show up a few minutes late.

Heh, well putting my place in the FFXI everyone in my family and extended families know I play games and a few of them know the specific ones I plays. It's just the whole RPG genre that seems to confuse them the most, they don't understand what's so thrilling about it. Which is why I generally tell them it's an interactive story were the hero's triumphs and triffs become my own through 3rd person perspective. A good RPG will have me in tears or sorrow when the hero has come face to face with his darkest fears and filled with conviction when they make their final stand.

To help them understand an RPG more (or at least the ones that tend to have more popularity) I tell them it's like a great book. For MMORPGs I tell them it's the fantasy of a Neverending Story.
