  • Re: How to raise your NPC buddy

lol, when I left a weapon with luto for my NPC, my npc is a guy, and so when she said "Don't worry, I'll make sure she gets it" I'm like {hmmm.} something wrong there.

    Yay, Ty for this Eohmer~

Question to Kilgraw. Did you keep your NPC on the Shield job, or kept him using a one-handed weapon after the 1st upgrade?

I've had her on attacker mode using a one-handed axe since I had the ability to change it... I really hated her provoking off me. Almost got herself killed the first time I took her out on the town. :p

Why do you ask? Are you unable to do the same? That'd be interesting if you got access to giving your npc different equipment for different slots depending on which weapon you chose.

I had the hypothesis that only those who kept their NPCs on Shield style or only gave their NPCs a one-handed weapon would get the option to give a shield to luto on the second upgrade. Looks like my second guess was right.

If you give your NPC a 2-hand weapon, they obviously have no shield. If you then give your NPC a 1-hand weapon, they still have no shield. You have to give them *back* a shield. Their starting sword and shield are, I think, the same things they have from the first list. (Namely Xiphos + Lauan Shield.) The second-list shield is Shell Shield, level 7 I believe.

And, of course, once you hit the first list (6 calls) you can fork over anything on that list. If you change your mind, just give something else to Luto. The game doesn't limit you to only one weapon, though of course you won't get a refund on the stuff you buy. Once you hit the second list (12 calls) you can't fork over anything on the first list, but you can just as freely fork over stuff on the second list.

Basically if you've been keeping your NPC on 1-handed weapons, give them a Shell Shield (as well as the upgraded weapon - the level and stats on the weapon are meaningless, the second-list stuff works better for the NPC even when its stats are worse for the player than the first-list equivalent) when you hit 12 calls and the second weapon list. Give them a Lauan Shield if you're on the first list, if they've somehow lost their shield (such as by changing to a 2-hand weapon, then changing to a 1-hand weapon).

They don't dual wield thus far.

Btw, I need to edit a few things in previous post. Like recommending that ppl not give a Staff to their npcs and switching from weapons that can have AoE ws attacks at certain levels (like Spinning Attack for Hand-to-Hand [Mnk 49], Cyclone for Dagger [Thf 41], Circle Blade for Sword [Pld 49], Shockwave for Great Sword [Drk 49], Spinning Scythe for Scythe [Drk 41], and the aforementioned Earth Crusher for Staff [Pld 23]). Keeping the weapons until your NPC reaches the lvl of the job that can use specific weaponskills is ok. But, keeping them after could get your npc killed.

This means that Great Katana, Great Axe, Polearm, Axe, Katana, and Club are safe to give NPCs without worrying about switching.

So it's been confirmed that the NPCs will get those AoE WSs?

My friend's NPC at level 34 pulled out Earth Crusher during our session yesterday while using a staff. STRONGLY recommend not giving your NPC a staff, as this happened 3 times over the course of 30 minutes.

Lol, well then looks like something that should be brought to SEs attention. Kind of hinders the NPCs value if they are going to do that.
