  • Re: How to raise your NPC buddy

I have no conrete evidence but I think the same rules apply betweeen pc and npcs. You wouldn't want your lvl 30 npc to be in a xp pt with a lvl 40 npc. A 1, 2, or 3 lvl difference shouldn't matter much unless you're killing stuff that's like VT to a lvl 40 but IT to a lvl 38.

    But, that's just my guess.

Can you zone with your NPC?

No. This info is right on SE's update page when they introduced NPCs btw.

Don't know about this yet, but my NPC is like 3 levels above my friends now. So far their leveling seems completly uneffected between eachother. Again though 3 level difference isn't that huge. But so far our NPCs have been leveling faster and faster now, mine levels nearly every time I take her out.

With the resent change though, now when I auto-target the next monster that linked if she's reached her max she will not go after it. She just despawns, so can't do what I said before on my first few accounts of using her now.

Oh, forgot to mention also. The second upgrade for Great Katana even though the Tachi is a weaker weapon then a Uchigatana the damage she's doing with it is definatly better. On top of that her WSs are hitting 100 - 160 to the previous 40-90 with the Uchigatana. It seems the weapon stats mean little to them and just the simple act of upgrading improves the damage.

Hmm, curious now though. Any tried trading back the first tier weapon to see if anything changes there?

              ?
I was about to test this by trying to parse 2 sessions before and after giving the 2nd GKT ... I had a feeling it might work this way. Thanks, you've saved me a lot of trouble!

(sidenote: NPC is 35, and it's tough to kill things as a bard solo!)

It's going to be a while, but I wonder if we'll have to worry about our npc firing off AoE WS?

I finally did the quests last night, took me a few tries to deal with dragon petrify as whm40.

Was exping my 39 npc with two friends and their lvl 30 npcs they had just got in xcarbard a few days back (just before patch). They both lvled mid way through their 2nd call (same time) and there wasn't a clear exp penalty to them for such for a huge difference. Mine also lvled mid way through. This would suggest there is no exp penalty because my npc also lvled to 31 midway through my 2nd call.

Yes, this info is linked on this thread's first page.

It's also possible that your NPC is improving through skilling that weapon and gaining levels. I'm not convinced that NPCs have all their stats automagically capped. My NPC use to suck at G.Axe but now he has at least 100 points in it because he can use Armor Break.

I really fail to see how a retrograde in weapons would improve skill otherwise.

I doubt that they skill up. When mine had Leveled Up to 33 which is right when you get to use Tachi:Kagero she did that one as her first WS on our next fight. Either she went and fought something while my back was to her or she didn't have a need to level it. We will see though when she reaches lv. 49 she should not be able to use Tachi:Jinpu as a WS for a while, if she goes and belts that one right out then that proves it.

Well proves it unless you want to go and say they are not restricted to skill caps like we are. If that is the case though then why didn't she use Tachi:Kagero before reaching lv. 33?

Could be that they can skill a weapon as much as they want, but cant use a weapon skill until they are in the lvl range for it. (I hope that makes sense.)

I think we've seen enough of NPCs to know they do not follow the rules of normal player characters 100%. That being said, it's quite possible that the NPCs do not use the exact weapon you give them, but rather simply determine weapontype by what you trade. The game could very easily say "you've given the NPC the 2nd weapon in the GTK list (reguardless of the stats on the weapon itself) and therefor the NPC now does X more damage than it used to do".

also i have called my NPC 7 times and cannot change her job so it is definatly connected to exp (only two of those 7 did she gain exp) so i'm thinking maybe it doesnt neccisarily have to do with lvl but exp in general?

what i've been doing is going with 3 ppl

SMN for astral flow, BLM for sleepga3, third member can be BLM or RDM.

this would work even better with 9 people (alliance of 3 parties with 3 people each)

kill 13-14 monsters, then train as many as you can (5-10) each except smn. smn waits with ramuh or shiva, everyone trains to him, stand in a corner if possible so they all cluster. then ga-3 plus astral flow everything, you can kill 10-20 at once, and usually everyone's NPC levels up at once because a chain of 15 monsters all IT must be worth 3500+ XP.

my goal is to level up twice from 1 astral flow, i hope i can get a screenshot of that for you soon
