  • SE, consider Bit torrent...

I'm sure the people at SE has at least one brainiac that could piece together a bit torrent like solution for deploying releases, that way, the more people online downloading the patch, the faster everyone would get their updates done, instead of this ridiculous wait...

That still leaves PS2 users out in the cold.

Is it really that bad? I updated in 30 minutes, logged on right away, and have been having a very normal day in FFXI, no server problems whatsoever.

Bit torrent doesn't help that much. In fact it might cause more trouble then it's worth. You have to understand what bit torrent does.

It's used to distribute large files while maintaining bandwidth. Small numerous amount of files not to mention 20,000 people at once is a death trap to bit torrent users.

The CRC checks on 1.1k each files alone might crash bit torrent to bits.

Bit torrent is ment for something like thousand people downloading a single, 2gig mega file.

So why doesn't SE compress all their updates into .exe files and run it like World of Warcraft does? And I've downloaded enough stuff off bittorrent to know there are certain torrents that contain a folder, within a folder, that have over 2k worth of files. The only difference is that there are not so many people downloading at once. Blizzard Entertainment however has proved that it DOES indeed work. While this leaves PS2 users screwed over, I'm sure they could allow PC users to use this, and PS2 download the old way.

I think it is very stupid to place your downloading update importance to a program that is not even comercial.......very irresponsible of Blizzard, and yeah any other form of updateing would leave PS2 people out, and SE does not want that.

You can easily put a version of Bittorent into the PS2 version as well.

Read the many articles on blizzard's stuttering bittorent update system. And the battle ground update frenzy, I had 2k/s or less most of the day when that happened. Blizzard's didn't do their homework well, and ended up with a lackluster update system. Lucky they have other places to offload like fileplanet.

If blizzard actually wanted a revolutionary distributed update system, there are many bit torrent like system, that are "middle-road" which gives up more bandwith to fix congestion.

And if you zip it, ala .exe, or whatever, then yes it would work significantly better, but then you would get a "combo" update, instead of the ffxi realtime update system.

If any files are corrupted, or missing, it has no way to figure it out. Not to mention the whole hacking fisasco of people puting in backup .dlls, until ffxi made a manual check on it and rewrote them.

Well in ffxi update system isn't the best, but it gives a heck of a lot of flexiblity(including PS2 cross-compatiblity), though many of it are unused to a certain extent.

S-E I think has this mind set that playing experience should be the same for Ps2 and PC and applying that to updating the game too... but the thing is, by providing PC users other ways to get version ups, they are reducing loads of the PS2 players too. Better for everyone. Bit torrent is just 1 way. They can even do file planet in this case ;/ at least we don't have to manually "retry"

Yea a sacraficial "combo" update from S-E would cure some problems, or just release more stuff earily.

Unfortunelly, S-E likes control, it gives them less to worry about the nick-nacks. Having people sniff around for items, and so.

OF course this time we can pretty much say that DDoS played a role in problems. Without the DDoS, it would of been much nicer, as around JP sleep time(afternoon NA), maybe 30% would of finished updating. Then when Prime time hit, wouldn't have what we saw yesturday...
