Congestion During the Version Update: Addition 5

This is a follow-up to the previous news regarding congestion issues with the version update occurring since Jul. 19, 2005 2:00 (PDT).

We have confirmed that there is a continuous DDoS attack underway which has hampered our efforts and slowed the recovery process.
Our technicans are still investigating the issue and considering all possible options to bring this matter to a speedy resolution.

If you continue to have errors during the version update, please wait a while and try again later.

Oh, they DEEPLY apologize, well then, all is forgiven. Cant say noone here saw the "continuous DDoS attacks" excuse coming.

EDIT: Can they not just say: "Sorry, we have better things to worry about than providing more servers to d/l from so that this doesnt happen everytime we update, so you're going to have to wait awhile and just deal with it."?

They dont even have a harmful DDOS, its everyone trying to d/l the damn patch from their idiotc servers.

it's not their fault , you know how many thousands ppl play this game ????
and ppl always try to DDOS FFXI servers , you should blame ppl who do the DDOS cus they didn't do that , prbadly we are playing atm . . .

yeah <.< i do notice how on the average update it was 1 hour tops to stop downloading then shortly after i have fun this is a i started 8 hours after patch finished and its been 13 hours o.O of me popping back on and trying to download D: so maybye its a ddos attack maybye its something else but its not a normal occurence

What I'm curious about, is this used to NEVER happen during updates. I used to just log on and get the shit lickity split. Last update it got pretty bad. Now its just getting worse and worse. I wonder if one of SE's servers is about to go kaput or something.

I think the continuous DDoS attacks are from ppl who got banned or sold gil. They pissed that SE is trying to stop them and making it harder for gil sellers to make and sell gill. The last time we had this much trouble logging on was when the banned all those accounts awhile ago. Since the update took so long I think the problem will be harder and take longer to fix. Some might not be able to get on for days.

I think the "DDoS" is just everyone trying to get the update at once so it appears as one.

100k+ people trying to download the same thing off the same server...what you think is gonna happen!?

I doubt this is the case, as everyone has mentioned, it has never crapped itself after an update before. Besides 100k+ people trying to download @ the speed SE caps you at wouldn't really slow their servers down that much. it's a what? 43mb download for PC users and 22mb download for PS2 users. It's not big enough to slow their servers down this much.

DDoS... again? Even if it's true, it starts to sounds suspicious now. They used this excuse too often already.

you cant even sign on after you downloaded it because of it. an then when i cancel the load up process it tells me the update didnt load. umm jack arses im not trying to download the packets, i already suffered thru that, im trying to play!

Square Enix is also bringing police forces in to help figure out the source of the attacks. "Law enforcement authorities in Japan, the United States and Europe have been contacted for support. Our technicians will continue to employ the most effective measures available to counteract the attacks. As well, we are working with local and international authorities to take legal action against those obstructing the PlayOnline service."

the same news are on various other knowen sites like Gamespot so i doubt they lie.
From rumors we know they got an anonymus e-mail with a 2mil $ extortion
