Yes, I DO use my PC to play FFXl, so this should work okay for me.

I suggest, if you are on PC, to get the modelviewer. It will let you see the file number for the equipment, face, hair, whatever you would like to change. This is how the we were able to see the relic WS without having to unlock them.

If you wanted to edit the .dats i have a guide but you will need a program such as Photoshop or something like it. Heres the guide's site: http://csce.unl.edu/~ijones/ffxi/

Okay.... firstly, what is a relic WS?

Second.... I have downloaded the program and been trying to follow the instructions on how to get it to work, Click Here but I cannot seem to get a picture up, of any character, in the viewer window on the left hand side of the program. How do I do that??

A couple of the features in the instructions are somewhat different to those in the program. For e.g. in the 3rd step on that page, where it says the location of the .DAT File at the top right hand corner of the program.......
well, in the program I downloaded, the location of the .dat files are below, in the table, next to where it has a list of things such as : face, head, body, hands e.t.c.
So maybe there has been an update to what it says in these instructions.

Thirdly, it says something about swapping .dat files and changing the file names, (I know this bit is probably only temporary for testing) but I guess I'm still quite confused on how to get this thing to work.

Also, you mentioned that I would need to use a pain program.
I have use of Paint Shop Pro, but I don't know what for, and how to use it with this Model Viewer either.

Edit : Does anyone know of any simpler instructions (and more to the point.... updated too) than those printed, so that I can get a better understanding of how to work this thing?

Program, instructions, and a bit of help if needed. The program is in Japanese, so make sure to read before you start pressing buttons.
I've had a look at the page you placed a link to up there, but I'm quite confused, as I don't exactly know what I'm supposed to be looking for.

Where do I find this program? Do I have to register at that site to be able to see it?

Snowball: Place the ffxi modelviewer in your Final Fantasy XI folder. Something like C:\Program Files\Playonline\Square Enix\Final Fantasy XI... or something liek that. After put the folders and viewer in the folder you run the .exe. It should load the models from the .dats in your Final Fantasy XI ROM folders, if you downloaded the english version. If you downloaded the japanese version you will have to change your language settings on the computer to japanese to be able to use the viewer.

Once you have the Model Viewer you won't need any other programs to swap a face .dat.

If you're having trouble with the model viewer you may have downloaded the wrong program, the one you want is found here http://www.folye.net/lists.html and will be the second choice in the list. Once to download and unzip it you just gotta click on the model viewer icon to run the program.

After you get the program running then you can start swapping .dats. First find the face you want to swap out in the viewer. In the upper corner there will be a set of numbers that look like #-##-##, that's the file's location and name. You'll have to get to the ROM folders for FFXI. Off hand I'm not certain what the exact path is, but most of it's given on the page that explains how to swap dats.

Any way, to swap .dats all you have to do is cut and paste the original file to a safe location, then insert a new file where you pulled the old one out of.

For example(i'm using somewhat random numbers here)

You want to swap the Bronze Harness. In the model viewer you can see it's file 1-52-28, meaning it will be in ROM folder 1(folder name is just ROM) in subfolder #52(which will be named 52) and it will be file number 28(named 28). You cut this file out, then paste it in a safe spot with a Proper label (i.e. Mithra Bronze harness 1-52-28, so you know you have a back up).

Now that you took that file out, it wil no longer show in game or in the viewer.

Next find the file you want to put in it's place, we'll jsut say you want to use Leather Armor. It can be any file as long as it A) belongs to the same race and B) fits in the same spot. Using the model viewer, you equip the leather armor and find it's #-##-## on the top of the page. Lets just say for example it's 1-22-33(Not it's real Number btw). You open ROM folder 1, subfolder 22 and copy file 33. You then paste that file in the same place as you put your original harness .dat file.

Once copied and pasted you change the name of the leather armor from 33 to 28. After this you copy the renamed leather armor file, open ROM 1, subfolder 52 and find the blank space from where you cut out the original bronze harness file. You paste the renamed leather armor file in it's place and that's it, you just swapped a .dat file. Now in game whenever a mithra uses the bronze harness you will see them in leather armor.

To change your face is exactly like that, only you need to know the numbers of the
face you have now and the number of the face you want to change it too. As long as both faces are mithra then you can swap them with little trouble. Just remember to back up anything you move and label the files correctly.

If you need more help I can prolly get the real numbers for the files later on, but for now I don't have access to my model viewer. Good luck and lemme know if it works.

                    Hi.

Thank you for typing out this interesting, yet detailed version of how I go about editing .dat files in the viewer.

Some of it I have understood most clearly, and the rest has me a bit confused, so I'll try to explain as best I can.
                    Here goes.....

Btw - I already downloaded the english version of the viewer, so I shouldn't have any problems there.

So, this is how far I have got, and have understood all of the above very clearly so far. (so far so good then. :p )

Using the model viewer, you equip the leather armor and find it's #-##-## on the top of the page. Lets just say for example it's 1-22-33(Not it's real Number btw).

Now, this is where I am a bit stuck, so I'll try to explain this as best I can.

So, after swapping out 1 file, and trying to exchange it for another, (for example, I removed 1 file and put it in a safe place, and my new replacement is "1-44-98 Seers Tunic" for a female Taru) it's like you said. At the top, is a supposed number, which reads #-###-###.

But what I don't understand is, why is the number covered up like that? How do I work out what the number of the file is, if I am to find its correct place in one of the ROM Files? Or do I just use the number it says in the list? i.e. the number for the seers tunic (which I would which I said was "1-44-98"

I'm quite baffled by this I think.

You open ROM folder 1, subfolder 22 and copy file 33. You then paste that file in the same place as you put your original harness .dat file.
In this case, (as an example) I opened Rom Folder 1, sub flder 47, and picked up file 32, (this is the one I want to move) and placed it in a safe place out of the way.

Then, I went to Rom Folder 1, sub folder 44, and picked out file 98 to put in place of the old file 32 in sub folder 47.

Okay, this is where I am stuck.
I cannot copy file 98 from sub folder 44, and place it in sub folder 47, where my original File 32 used to be, as there is already another file 98 in there.
All the ROM Folders seem to have files with the same number, even though there maybe diffrent information concealed inside them. (and when I do a copy + paste, I just get a message telling me something like : "a file with this name already exists" So my system thinks its the same file, when really, it isn't)

So, what do I do in order to place this file in that folder I want it to go in please?

Once copied and pasted you change the name of the leather armor from 33 to 28. Okay, you said to change the files to a diffferent numbers once they have been copied and pasted, but I'm not sure why you need to do this.
Also, does the file you change the number to, have to be a specific number, or do you just think up any number at random in your head?

To change your face is exactly like that, only you need to know the numbers of the
face you have now and the number of the face you want to change it too. As long as both faces are mithra then you can swap them with little trouble. Just remember to back up anything you move and label the files correctly.

This last bit sounds exactly like the same process you would go through to change any parts of the body (i.e. body, legs, feet e.t.c) so I don't think I need any help with that.

Phew! That took some working out in my mind, plus a little brain wracking Heh heh.
I hope I haven't confused you in what I have written, enough for you to be able to explain where I am going wrong in the parts I don't understand.

If you are able to leave any feedback, it would be quite helpful.

                    Thanks. :cool_shad

Btw - I still haven't got as far as to be able to see a picture of a character in the viewer on the left hand side. (it's just a green, blank background) So I still haven't got that bit figured out yet. I don't know if that comes up later somewhere after editing a character's body features on the right hand side or not.
I wonder if you might be able to tell me how I do this please?

I used the #-##-## thing as a generic example of how the file name will appear in the model viewer. It can mean 1-22-33 or 1-12-100(random numbers btw) or 1-44-98 in your case, but will always appear in the same format. When you scroll through the equipment in the model viewer there will be a number at the top left corner of the screen that changes with the equip.

http://cse.unl.edu/~ijones/ffxi/body.jpg <--- this pic gives you an example of what you'll be looking for

that's the number you need to use to find the correct files

In this case, (as an example) I opened Rom Folder 1, sub flder 47, and picked up file 32, (this is the one I want to move) and placed it in a safe place out of the way.

Also, does the file you change the number to, have to be a specific number, or do you just think up any number at random in your head?
You are correct in noticing that every subfolder has the exact same numbers, ranging from 1-160ish. Each one of these is a different .dat file from the game. When you equip a Seer's Tunic in game, your com says to find the file with the name 1-44-98. By looking there and finding that file, it displays the graohics of the seer's tunic in game. If you removed file 98 from folder 1 subfolder 44, when you try to use the seer's tunic in game, you will appear to have no body at all, just a head and hands floating around where a body should be. The folder#-subfolder#-file# coding is to help the com find the right files faster and easier.

When you pull a .dat file from the sub folder, it will no longer be able to be shown in game. But by putting another file in it's place, with the same number as the original, you are telling your com the file is still there. If you change the name of the seer's tunic file from '98' to '32' you will be able to place the seer's tunic file in the subfolder. The Com won't let you put two files of the same type with the same name in the same folder, which is why each .dat has a different number within the folder. By changing the name of the new file to the same number as the original file you pulled out of the subfolder, you are able to put the new file in it's place without over writing any other file.

As for the model viewer trouble, you might not have it's destianation path(the folder it looks in to find the models and such) correct.

http://cse.unl.edu/~ijones/ffxi/MVfilemenu.jpg <- this pic should help show you how to find out if you have the correct path in the model viewer.

Also, I believe all the files that are extracted from the zipped file have to be in the same folder, so if you have the launch icon on your desktop with all the other files in a folder somewhere it may not run correctly.

I hope this helps clear things up a bit. Once you get going things seem much easier. If you have any more questsions just ask.

I even used this in Dynamis.

                              DAMMMMMIIIIIITTTT!!!
This Model Viewer has got me quite frustrated now!! :magmad:

I have been playing around with a few things in the viewer, (just the viewer though. I haven't been swapping any new ROM Folder files since yesterday) and something has gone wrong  and I don't know how to fix it.

Yesterday, everytime I opened the viewer, the screen on the left was always in the "GREEN" colour it was supposed to be, but just today, I opened it again for a short while to play around with some stuff, and surprised myself by finding out that I could bring up some NPC characters to look at, (by clicking the NPC option at the top)
and I could ACTUALLY see what they looked like too, unlike yesterday, when I was completely cluseless about this.

But NOW..... there is something I have done (well, I HAVE removed the viewer and its files from my default folder where the FFXl Icon starts, to start all over agin with the model viewer, but I'm not sure if it's the cause of my problem though) which has turned the window in the Model Viewer (on the left) into a "BLUE" colour.
This is the colour it would be before I would move the viewer, (or if I haven't already done so) into the game's default folder, (as I have just said) but I DID move into there, and it's still Blue. I can't get it to the GREEN colour that it should be! :-(

Also..... after changing things around a bit, I now cannot an NPC character to show up either.

I don't know what I have done to cause this, but now I'm feeling frustrated, and I don't know how to sort it out.

Can someone try and help me here please?
It would be helpful if they could.

P.S. - my game itself is still fine, so no files are broken, and I'm still able to play just fine.

I've also set the correct FFXl Folder at the top left hand corner, under "File(F)" and STILL, I have these minor problems. :-(

                                Hi again everyone.

Okay, after my little outburst yesterday, (Oops! ) I have now managed to get a character to show up in the Model Viewer. Here's what it looks like.

I found, and realised that my problem was in the "Final Fantasy" path/route you put in. (under "File" in the top left hadn corner) I had the corect the path/route from the very beginning, but it says not to forget the "\" and you (or rather "ME", since I have only just found this out) have to put this right at the end too, (i.e. - if the path is C:\Program Files\Square Enix, you have to put the "\" right at the end of the path too, which is why nothing would show up for me before) otherwise a character (for some unknown reason) just WON'T show up in the viewer.

Anway..... now that I have this thing working, I have a question to ask. (I'm still rather confused over this, so please try and bare with me if you will)
The character I put in the viewer that you see there - say for e.g. that is the one I want to use ingame, so what do I do now? Do I need to swap any files at all?
I had the impression that you only needed to swap any files, if you were to go looking for another file (in a ROM Sub Folder) that you wanted to use in its place, but since I want to use this one as an e.g. (and I didn't swap any .DAT Files to look for it either) I'm not sure that I need to swap any files now really.

So, I made a save instead, and I now have a saved .DAT File of that model in my default FFXl Folder.

So what happens now? Please can anyone tell me?
How do I get it to show up ingame? (or whatever you do)
                                Please help!

P.S. - I'm really desperate to get this thing going, so
                                "PLEASE".......
someone read my post, and help me out! /begs
                                It would be helpful.
