Their just banning people for the wrong reasons. There's so much more people that do more crap out there than a simple windower. Not focusing on the real problems "Like bots that log in at 8:00 and buy out all the bronze ingots for 13 hours straight then log back off" There's more crap out there that they should worry about, but windower was an easy target, and they just picked them off.

On a side note, it did say something on their website that they enabled some auto cheat detection methods. Anyone know what that is?

I do recall on a previous update last one or the one before. Where they were installing methods to check their files. It was like a periodic check were it constantly scanned or something. Its on a thread I posted on here, I even speculated that this could be the beggining steps of a method to identifying 3rd party programs. Perhaps that actually was the beginning steps.

The windower is like a gateway cheat. I don't know how many of you played Diablo 2, but I'm sure those that did remember MapHack. At first, it was just a beniegn thing as well. Just helped with maps, then monster locations. But once people realized that they could get away with using MapHack, a 3rd party program not supported by Blizzard, it became much easier for people to justify using other, more malign, cheats. Same thing with the windower. What came first, the windower, or the voke bots and fishing bots?

And it's not that hard to live without the windower. Go play on the PS2 instead, or get some willpower. When I need info, I either print it out, remember it, or log out and go check. And checking only takes me like a min or 2 at most.

It always seems to be either a windower or a mapper that is the first thing to start then snowballs from there. UO started off first getting that map hack which gave you a bigger and better map then what UO provided. That's the irony a game could provide everything the gamers want it still won't be enough for them, they'll find some excuse still to say it's bad and want better.

Does smoking cigarettes from nicotine make people smoke marijuana? Does smoking marijuana lead to cocaine? does smoking cocaine lead to death? etc.

There is no easy answer to that, Everyone tries to proganda marijuna as a gateway drug, but every study on it shows it's not.

Windower is windower, not a hacking through the teeth. Don't fall into that line of thinking where one equals another. It can become mc carthy witch hunting lines of thoughts: If you're you went to a communist discussion you are likely to become a communist which is likely to go to the enemy which is likely to be spies which is likely to to...

Heh, it's not a gateway drug in the way that government propaganda describes it. They stretch the truth like anybody trying to force a point across people. For some people, it is a gateway drug in that sense. For others, they will start with the drug right away. Others will stop at smoking. It's not a simple, Person A does thing B, and so will eventually do thing C. People are human. It just doesn't work that way for everyone. What it does do is make it easier for someone to be convinced of going just a little farther. Here's an example:

Girl A is hanging out with her friends. They convince her to try smoking. She decides to pick it up to be cool with her friends, but doesn't want to do drugs like she knows they do. A couple months later, she's gotten in trouble a couple times because of smoking. She's also gotten more accustomed to being with her friends and smoking. Now they get her to come to a party and try pot. She decides that she's already in trouble for smoking, so why not have fun with her friends like she wants, and just smoke pot too? She can always quit if she doesn't like it. So now she starts smoking pot with her friends a lot. And the cycle can continue on from there with worse and worse drugs.

Now, not everyone will be like this. Only some people. Same type of thing can happen with cheating in games.

I've also noticed that most reasons or justifications that people give for using the windower are selfish ones. They're using it for themselves more than anything. Because they want to be able to chat to their other friends. Because they want to see their ability times always on the screen. Because they want to browse the internet while LFP. I don't think I've seen anybody mention using it to help an LS do quests, help people get AF, answer a newbies questions, or find out the ingredients for a synth for someone else. Not attacking anyone or anything. No one would be living if they weren't a bit selfish at all. I'm just trying to get people to stop and think about what they're doing. To re-evaluate they way they look at this issue.

For some people, it is a gateway drug in that sense. For others, they will start with the drug right away. Others will stop at smoking. It's not a simple, Person A does thing B, and so will eventually do thing C. People are human. It just doesn't work that way for everyone. What it does do is make it easier for someone to be convinced of going just a little farther.

Totally off topic and I apologize but I had to address this. One of the reasons we address marijuana as a gateway drug is because many people have addictive personalities. Quite often to these people it will be a gateway drug. If a person with an addictive personality uses marijuana and because of that use also starts to enhance the affects with alcohol, then the marijuana becomes a gateway drug. (Yes alcohol is a drug) Now this person has a higher chance of becoming an alcoholic. Or take the same person that starts smoking marijuana and after a while their threshold for it is reached and they enhance it with other drugs, then again it is a gateway drug. These 2 examples are quite common, more common than people realize. People with addictive personalities are at high risk when they use marijuana. If anyone has parents or grandparents that have had or currently have an addiction problem then these are the people that should stay away from using. The problem is the people with family that are addicted usually don't realize it because its become a natural part of their lives and they don't see a problem with it. Also be aware that addictive personalities do not always manifest themselves in addictions to chemical substances. There is sexual addiction, gambling addiction, etc.

actually most of my windower time is spent gathering data for the ls. what recipe seems to look the cheapest to skill on. where to actually lead a ton of people thru fei yin. when i lvl my low jobs, what skill chain to use. coffer spawns, nm spawns.

the personal benifets to having windower, is my game doesnt crash because i got a nortons warning. a windows warning. the game doesnt crash on me because i forgot to shut down AIM. or because i got a blank pop up ad. lol then its talk to online friends, an watch anime movies. somone said something about ps2 users cant do this. when actually i can split screen my tv. i have picture in picture. so i can play FFXI right next to my xbox. watch live tv, an if i care to, even surf the web with webtv..

to be honest. i dont feel the windower is yet a cheat or a hack. i still label it under the other programs like win amp, modelviewer, an fraps. an still cant put it in the same catogory as voke bots, fish bots, guild bots, A.H bots, speed hacks, warp hacks an so on.

ever heard of an overdose? if you dont know anything about drugs please dont try to talk about it.

Now back on topic, I agree with what Macht said the windower can be a great little thing to use if you just want to check some info while still in game but it can also lead to people taking advantage of it and turning it into something more harmful to the integrity if the game.

What I believe is that because of these plug-ins the windower has now been targeted, if it was just a plain windower nothing else I dont think SE would be so gung-ho on banning people for 96 hours for using it.
