Mmmm why would the guy want an interview? Its not that i dont believe it, its just i like to see some more credibility? How credible is 1up?
...you think this was a fake article? You gotta be kidding me.
That feature was by a guy who's working for EGM, now working for Wired. The url to his page was incorrect on the article itself. http://egmwiley.1up.com
I feel no hostility from Shelia for questioning a source. -_-;a I dont see how thats wrong.
That and because i see a release date on a game that has low probability(damn) of comming out in the US, yet they put one there anyway and not on any other gaming site. I am sorry for doubting something and i should blindly follow whatever thats posted on the internet without question -_- Ridiculous.
Either way its one article, wonder if theres any more. The more articles the more different opinions and stuff we can see.
this is practically a dream job for them. getting paid 56 cents an hour sitting on a pc playing a game? that's better than getting paid 17 cents an hour sewing stripes on to pants sold at walmart.
anyway, i agree, this is terrible. but i don't blame the farmers, they're just doing a job. i blame the pigs that take advantage of their cheap labor and get freaking rich off of it. and i blame the asshats who buy mmorpg currency and make this sort of market viable.
anyway, it's fun to log on to my various characters on both sides of WoW and kill the farmers/sellers. they're so highly unskilled in pvp. it's even more fun when they think they ambushed you, and you have friends lying in wait!
too bad there's no pvp ganking in ffxi, then the farmers would have no chance!
I've always had pleasure killing farmers, in Lineage 2 + World of Warcraft but then I realized something: I'm making the lives of others difficult. To us, we hate the people who farm but usually they have NOTHING to do with the actual process of selling whatever is farmed. Infact, because of our PKing and interference they might lose their job and not have anything to eat for a month or so due to lack of a job. The world we live in is sad and it's more sad that we can't do anything about it. We are already doing all we can (I frickin' hope so) which is not purchase online currency. And if anyone does here, even though this is unlikely, I hope the law states the death sentence to all who purchase game currency. Yes, my hatred runs that deep =P
But then, on the bright side, who knows...maybe PKing them actually allows them to have some fun. I remember in Lineage 2 there were these infamous people known as the LOVE&KISS clan during beta. They camped Dark Elf dungeon for hours and no on was allowed to go in or you would be PKed. Near the end of beta a huge clan was formed (forgot the name) to take action against them. Pretty sure it was as fun for them to defend the area compared to us killing them =P
The article makes a lot more sense then the witchhunting gilfarmer bashing accusations around here.
Key points:
A person who has programing skills makes bots
Low income people monitor bots
Sell to a distributor.
Direct Myths disproved: IGE are gilfarmers.
This specifically has quotes and gives evidience that IGE are NOT GILLFARMERs. They're only distributors, a middle man. Sure they turn a blind eye to some of the rotten things, but that's nothing new in business. All those masses of people that shove pitch forks and shout "Down with IGE" now has a realitiy check. There is no conspiracy that IGE is paying massive underaged teenagers to farm to death. They mearily skim the difference of people selling and people buying.
Myth's put in question: Professional Gilfarmers are SOB, MPK, HNM stealers.
This article points to otherwise. They do mudane farming, using macros and bots and have people that monitor it. This method is means that they are not training workers to actively play ffxi.
Bot's aren't good enough to KS, or MPK or take on HNM. In fact the workers seem to know so little (only respond and walk), that they wouldn't bother with KS, MPK, or HNM. These people get minimal training.
They are NOT paid on a proformance basis(sorta, stationed on a spot of 20/hr they need 15 per hour). This makes it very unattractive to KS, MPK, or HNM. It's workflow. There is too high risk of not making any money, and people that don't really know how to play anyway. These people monitor, and walk around, not pick fights. They farm, not HNM hunting.
They DO NOT live in hazardous conditions. I remember one poster on ffxionline, claim gillfarmers will get beaten by their boss if they don't do "so and so", etc.. In pictures and as it states, it's a normal company environments, and heck a easier then some of our jobs.
Are there MPKing, KS, HNM, gil farmers out there? Probably. But Not these guys. Sweat Shop style, model just doesn't work for high attention/skill basis. They perfer mindless people.
Math:
2000->4000 yuan a month is a lower-mid range income for China
(Give or take where you live. Closer to city, the more it cost, Big cities are higher like Beijing, and HK is even higher then US)
Therefore at a trade of 8 for 1, so $25 - $50 US per month. The article gives us a number of 56 cents an hour, and $150 a month. See the money difference, that's A LOT of money for income level. Almost 3x of your butcher or shop keeper.
The first myth you mentioned, I don't think is a very highly believed myth anymore. At the same time, it is still bullshit that IGE(as a business) can make money off another company's ideas. Whether its common business or not, its still bullshit simple as fact.
As for your second myth, tell that to the people getting mpk'd, kill-stolen from. Just cause an article puts something slightly into question don't forget all the people that have been dicked around by these guys.
Screwing the math, what are companies who own these servers supposed to do? What are players supposed to do? Just deal?
It can't fall upon the GMs or other customer support staff to police it... It's just too big of a job, and they have to stay on the side of caution so as to not ban innocent users. What the companies need to do is take steps to make the game not as susceptible to these type of things. WoW has taken steps towards that with BoP items and instances etc., however, there are still many valuable 'world drops' (Like 1/10000 chance of dropping) that they still make their gold off of and that other people buy. So the problem still exists there, albeit in a slightly less obtrusive form.
At the current stage of FFXI, there's not much SE can do except perhaps make future NMs and stuff that drop the 'valuable' items BCNMs, ENMs, and trigger pops.
Essentially what I'm saying is, the gilsellers can't be policed by actual people, the game has to be designed in such a way that it prevents it, but doesn't get in the way of players (ala the stupid fishing thing SE has in the game where you have to zone every now and then). Which... is easier said than done.
Actually, World of Warcraft fixed many of the equipment problems. Many many (almost all) good high level weapons, even low level weapons, bind to you when picked up. In other words once you pick it up you cannot trade them. Also, most people don't even buy gold because it's not that hard to obtain gold. But then, when things are so easy....the game gets boring fast.
Also, the best items involve you reaching the highest rank on the PvP ladder and they cannot be sold either. I don't know if Blizzard was a genius or not, but this solved a lot of the gilfarmer problems that we have here.

Dont forget we are still paying at least 13 dollars amonth....a game we are paying for they are destroying...
If they wanna pay me my 15 bucks a month sure ill shut the fuck up but intill then i will stop them...
