Concept art is neat since you can see what they started with and then compare it with the final version that we know in game. Thank for sharing the pics.
Originally posted by RuneGrey Very nice looking. You can definately see the influence that Crystal Chronicals had upon Final Fantasy XI in its early development stages. I'm surprised that the Mithra don't look more like Selkies than they do now, given that I understand that it was the FF:CC designer who did most of the work on FFXI to start with.
And if it isn't obvious that the Taru were heavily influenced by the Lilties in FF:CC... both in overall design and in racial temperment.
I like some of these designs, but I guess they ended up wanting a more 'realistic' look to things.
I hope what I'm about to say doesn't come in any offense; but if you look at the original Japanese release dates, I'd say the roles would be reversed -- and that Final Fantasy XI had an influence when creating CC.
Where as CC was released in Japan on August 8th, 2003...the original PS2 release of FFXI in Japan was more than year before then...dating at May 16, 2002.
Overall, I think FF: Tactics would be the one that had an impact on both games in terms of designs.
Thank god that Elvaan was only a concept... They look horrid!

Thats Kendo!
It'll just take you 20 years to learn to do it right.

I would have chosen a Tarutaru if that's what they'd have looked like...
The goblin concepts look remarkably like the goblins that Brian Froud designs. (Some of you may know of him - or remember the films "Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth")

There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.

Those Tarus look cool.
They seem to have alot darker of a theme to them...
Now, you'll see these cute little "animals" running around...
Kind of takes away from the "mysticism" feel.
They would've made a better looking race if they stuck true to the concepts.
