    um... I can't get on either -_-

As for "give them a break they're being attacked"

You don't think other corps aren't either? I am sure EVERY SINGLE mmorpg has been or is being attacked daily. SE's absolute lack of the ability to HANDLE/FIX/TAKE CARE OF/RESOLVE/ETC is the only thing different from everyone else. Boo hoo we're being DDOSed, but we're gonna take your money anyways and "work to resolve the problem".

It's been almost 3 weeks now, just how long does it take to "resolve a problem" of this nature?

Pretty fuc|<!|\| weak for a multimillion dollar corporation.

    ***edit***

there is DEFINITELY a KNOWN issue as of right now, yet there is NO notification of what's going on posted on POL.com (P.lay O.nline L.ater). They're leaving everyone in the dark.

When they release a statement saying they have the federal government investigating it, i'll believe it.

maybe a little noob to ask but what are these hackers after ? Why are they attacking SE with so many dos attacks ?
And won't they be able to destroy SE's database with their attacks ? I don't think so offcourse and it may sound noob but i'm just wondering...

DDOS attacks the connection from the ISP and the TelComm provider. Basically it floods/saturates the ISP network's bandwidth causing lag and other such annoyances.

It's a process to get the DDOS stopped (alert ISP, ISP alerts telcom, telcom alerts authorities. As far as what the authorities do I have no idea, especially internationally.) But it is NOT something that should take three weeks. Worse comes to worst SE finds more bandwidth, reallocates bandwidth, or goes with another ISP if theirs isn't cutting it. But no they're "working to resolve the problem" while we get to sit through and bounce POL 0011's ALL damned day for a week.

is DDoS that fast to solve normally?

was IT intern when our ISP was attacked and it had a 6 day turn around with the hackers being apprehended on the 6th day. We could have been lucky, but for crying out loud it's been THREE WEEKS. FIND a solution whether it be another provider/etc. If they had to shut down for two days to do something that would completely fix this situation I, as I'm sure you ALL, would NOT mind a bit. But dragging it out with hidden ineundos, lame-weak-felt appologies ("our bad, sorry for the inconvenience." An inconvenience is someone parked in my spot at work. This is a fuc|<in month long travesty. They can send me an electronic newsletter promoting all their $h!7 including publicity for controllers no less, but they can't send me and everyone else a mass email explaining their situation and they ARE sorry for the inconvenience.) and all this other ish we've been put through since this all started is just them hiding behind a problem they're having trouble solving.

Yeah I won't leave the game, I've got 42 days invested over the period of 4 months since I started playing. Was the service before this good? Yes. Do i want a refund? No, 10% of my playtime is affected by all of this, but it's REALLY fuc|<in' annoying. SE has their upsides, but as far as technical maintenance and public relations they suck more than a $5 whore with a golf ball and a garden hose.

and MAGICALLY we're able to login again...

with yet ANOTHER half assed answer to a problem:

"If you're having problems logging in please try again at a later time." Not even an appology this time. Lol it gets better and better everyday. If my time is now and I am paying to use your $h!7 I expect I can use it during my time. If it was free or I was being refunded that's another BST altogether. Good luck to everyone else trying to login as well. Hopefully we can all get on without problems.

Oh, thank God, it's not just me. When I saw no report of an error on the POL website, I got worried that my internet connection was screwed up somehow

Perhaps not the most elegant way to express it but I wholeheartedly agree.

DDOS, update problems, whatever. Throw the thousands and thousands of people paying for your service a bone and at least give us a clue as to what's going on. I don't work at SE and last time I tried, I still wasn't able to read minds. The level of service over the past month has been absolutely unacceptable DDOS or not. Like the poster I quoted said, while prosecution and apprehension of DDOS'ers may not be instant, certainly resolving the issue for your players should be significantly faster than this.

Like many others, I'm not going anywhere, but I think as a player, my opinion counts, and square will certainly hear my opinion.

6 day turn around for a DDoS is incredibly good actually. That person had to of been really dumb to not cover his tracks right. Otherwise if you have someone especially skilled 6 days isn't going to cut it, some of the more noteworthy ones have taken 1 year or longer to catch and stop.

Also you have to consider a lot of players with the PC version are definatly using third party programs (Windowers, FFXItools, etc..) and one of those could add a registry string and turn your computer into one of the possible millions releasing a DDoS attack on the server without those players even knowing it. When got so many players like that unknowingly doing a DDoS attack how do you expect to find the source to stop it all?

This kind of thing is a tough one to resolve and will definatly take time to resolve, I wouldn't expect a 6 day or 1 month turnaround at all for this.

                            EDIT:

Either way this does give the insetive or possible drive or reason for SE to prevent those 3rd party programs or ban those using them in any way, shape, or form.

A good place to look at I think is the gibson research center, the biggest (No suprise to me) OS they show being extreemly vulnerable to being hosts for these DDoS attacks are Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Operating systems I'm sure many of the FFXI players are using and could be hosts the agents are using to attack POL.

Ok, that yesterday was a wide spread DDoS. If it where a Server fault, you wouldn't half loging and then kicked out. I got twice to 50% Login then lost connection to the full.

Since i had Friends on the servers who did well, i assume the Group went only after the POL mainserver not at the World Servers.

And for the kiddo, who said it's not a DDoS and, a DDoS can be solfed in 2min, go back to school.

One big problem of a DDoS is that you might have 10'000 or more Zombie Computers who bombing you in time intervals. It's a Distributed Denail of Service, not only a single Denail.... So i want to see you to enter 10'000 IPs 95% of them are dynamic in a Black list to filter all the Junk out. Normaly a DDoS is not only a ICMP and SYN Flood, since most Systems (even Windows) can filter them.

And you can't really do anything against a DDoS in preperation, if you could then you would not need these big connections where you calculate around 15% for Flooding attempt.

For the Reason, i think that are Gilsellers/Gilbuyers that where kicked from the game and need not their "Revenge" for being kicked. I doubt it has something to to with the Japan China thing.
