A short outline of the storyline and the various plot involvements.
Poeple dont realize it but many quests and NPc's are part of the overall storylines.

    Bastok : Sandoria :Windurst

During the M1-M12 of these 3 nations stories you are basically a nobody agent of your nation trying to rise up the ranks.

They involve little more than fetch this or do that.
They dont tie to heavily yet.

During M5-1 after you do the magicite Which is basically the beginning of the Main storyline Pre expansion. You have risen enough in your nation to tackle a great challenge. Your task to defeat the lich is your last test of worthiness befoe you fight the Shadowlord.

    M5-2 The Shadowlord Battle
After Volker defeated the shadowlord during the War, Its spirit of evil fled to parts unknown, During the 3 Nations expedition you witness the betrayal of mistrust of each nation. Then you witness the beginnings of Raogrimms slip into the Shadow after Cornelias death.

Your nation sends you to Castle zvhal to investigate the "supposed " re appearance of the Shadowlord.

This is where the story Splits.

Dynamis: Another Being becomes the Shadowlord and Raogrimms spirit requires the assistance of the members of the original members of the 3 nation expedition.
Although Dynamis isnt a mission it is the continuing story of Raogrimms fate.

Bastok: Deals with the racial divide between galka and Hume and the future of the next Talekeeper. Cornelia( Karsts) daughter and zeid favor HEAVILY in these stories. You also learn of Volkers family legacy. Cornelias wish for her people, The destiny of the new talekeeper and the Antican invasion into the Altepa region.

Windurst: These Missions are continuations of the Main story abotu Windursts past and the use of forbidden Magic and the fate of Ajido Marujido. fenrir, The Sumoner AF stories all favor heavily in these tales. Windurts past is shrouded in secrecy and the lil tarus wish to keep it that way. In order to keep windurst from having the fate that befell it before. they go to great lengths to keep things hush even arresting you. Semih the mithra is the head guard of the Star sybil and plays heavily also.
But ajido marujido is the star.

Sandoria: Deals with the betrayal and jealousy on the part of the kingdoms rulers and priestly hierarchy.
I dont remember fine details but it basically is Trions ascent.

Ziraat: These missions deal with the last survivors of the first two races. The kuluu and the ziraat. The Kuluu and the Dawn maidens(agents of Altana) defeated the ziraat , but at great cost to Vana'Diel and themselves.
The ziraat missions take you from betrayal to the suposed acendancy of one who wants to become a god , to one who just wants to live among them. The plot twist here is nice. When people first realize who the ziraat are some are surprised others are in for a deeper shock.

The ziraat missions also foretell the coming of the apocalypse to vana'Diel. and the heroes who must Stop it from coming to pass.
It also has long lasting affects as the gateway to the gods become open to the people who it was never supposed to be open to. Namely the five races. I did nearly all the ziraat missions over the course of 9 hours one day and I must say its my favorite next to windursts.

various Npc quests: Constantly speak of teh fallen heroes /Villains of the wars. the coming dooms and the fate of vana'diel.

Ok I have a question: after you beat up "you-know-who," do you still see the archduke in jueno? or is he replaced?

        (hopefully this isn't too vague)

        Thanks Yyg!

Keep in mind you never actually SEE the archduke unless you can get into his room. So they just dont let you in his room and give the gaurds some crappy generic saying.

I am writing a fan fic(points to sig) which is very very strictly based off the books... so these kind of threads help. I tried to do this a LONG time ago, but was completely ignored(no replys). So I happy to see this becomes a success.

              BLM AF.

Stars: The gardener of the trees in Heaven's Tower basement(I don't remember the name will be called the gardener), Koru-Moru, Shantotto, Yoran-Joran(may be off), and Koru-Moru's old girlfriend(forget name again ><)

              AF-1
The tree of Heaven's Tower's growth has become unhealthly weak. The gardener calls the three famous doctors: Shantotto, Yoran-Joran, and Koru-Moru. They have a little arguement on what is causing it. (You find out Shantotto and Yoran-Joran went out once o.o)... I think you can choose who to side with, but it is the same thing: they think the trees need more light. You head to Xarcabard and kill a NM Light Elemental and you get a somekind of light orb.

              AF-2
              (Part 1)
              No good. Light wasn't the problem it seems. Koru-Moru has a suggestion... more so a secret. 20 years ago, Jeuno was facing many problems due to the crawler's eatting all their crops. *look at notes below*. A group of doctors were called together to solve this problem. Another doctor, which I will name as Koru-Moru's girlfriend, had an idea. She wanted to take the Star Seeds to Crawler's Nest and think that it would solve their problems. Koru-Moru was somewhat against it, but he loved her. With the seeds, and alone, she went out to see the Crawler Queen. She never returned and most likely dead. ;_;
              (Part 2)
After getting the seeds back from a Water Elemental in CN, it is Shantotto's turn. 20 years ago, she lead a squad of War Warlocks into the Castle of the Shadow Lord(forget name -.-). *see notes*. Problems went down and they were doomed and alone due to the retreating Royal Knights(useless Elvaans...). Shantotto was given a magical, floating doll that was perfect for tactical decisions and information. The magical doll also had a negative personallity and laughed at the Tarutarus telling them they were all going to die by the coming beastmen. Shantotto snaps and leaves the doll as a distraction as they made they made their escape. Beauty AND brains... what a package . You are asked to recover the doll, because it 'cursed' windurst.

              AF-3
Well it seems Shantotto forcing you to go the castle was in vain. Or it seems not. Time for Yoran-Joran to show he is more than crazy dude'aru. He plays with the doll you recovered. Now it can check for magicial abmorlities(jesus, forgive my spelling) and errors. Also it is silenced... thanks to Shantotto's request. Anyway you are sent to the Canel below Heaven's Tower to find the errors. You find one easily. Second one the doll gets an error, and you must use black magic(Manafont) to fix it. The last one, a Dark Elemental NM pops. I am at this point... no will help me -.-...

Anyway thats all I got... sorry for my forgetfulness/spelling. I would LOVE to hear more about SMN AF storyline btw...

              *NOTES*
-Jeuno's goverment at the time(which may have not been the Zilart Archduke) was against doing a full out attack against crawlers nest.
-Shantotto, as the leader of the Orastery, was the the highest position of the Windurstian military: War Warlord. Currently Ajido-Marujido holds this position.

That we can now live here in peace...under the blessed shadow of the Great Star Tree...is all thanks to the great hero, Karaha-Baruha...!"

Perhaps you have met the wizened Tarutaru named Zayhi-Bauhi while walking through Windurst Walls. He is known throughout the city for his constant speeches praising the great hero of Windurst.

Since the end of the Great War, much has been said about the heroism of Karaha-Baruha. Zayhi-Bauhi wanted to speak with a reporter to clarify the story.

Dispensing with formalities, he got right down to business.

"Listen up. Twenty years ago was right in the middle of that awful war," he said.

"At that time, I had just graduated from the beginners class at the School of Magic. I could barely cast a fishing line, let alone a combat spell. Nevertheless, I volunteered to join the guards at Odin's Gate in Windurst Waters to help protect the city.

"Even now, I still see it in my dreams. It was the night of the Siege of Sarutabaruta. My Caster Company was in the gate's lookout tower, preparing for battle. The magical barrier on the gate was Windurst's last line of defense from the teeming hordes below. We looked out over our doom; countless beastmen, and Goddess knows what else, covered the land as far as the eye could see..."

In the middle of the war, while the majority of the allied forces were massed on the front lines, the Shadow Lord assembled thirty thousand of his best troops to put an end to the threat posed by the Combat Casters. Standing against those thirty thousand was the city guard of Windurst, who numbered less than a thousand--including Cardians. It was as obvious as a Yagudo campfire on a moonless night that the city was about to fall.

He continued. "It was a face-off at Odin's Gate. Orders came from the division commander to our Caster Captain: 'Hold them off.' That was all.

"The monstrous horde was bathed in the pale glow of the moon. Only a miracle would bring us through to see another dawn. Terror gripped my body and I lost my footing, tumbling down before the beastmen set against us...

"I doubled over in pain. All I could hear were the metallic scrapes of swords being pulled from their scabbards and the blood-curdling cries of the advancing beastmen. They had seen me fall and were approaching fast.

"The monsters rushed towards me like a wave in a storm, unconcerned with the spells raining down upon them.

"I was doomed. But at the very moment I gave up all hope, there was a flash of light and a soul-shaking howl that resounded over the plains of Sarutabaruta!

"I looked up to see a shaft of divine light stretching from the top of the magic tower toward the full moon that hung in the sky.

"That's right! It was the great hero, Karaha-Baruha! He was summoning! It was an enormous beast! Right there! Above the tower!

"And the battle took a tremendous turn! Each swing of the beast's mighty forelegs sent dozens of beastmen flying! The magic emanating from his immense body vaporized hundreds more!

"Before we even realized what was happening, the beastmen were turning tail and fleeing. The humongous beast had broken both their ranks and their morale, and now he was hunting down those that had breached the gates to the city. Then, as suddenly as he had come, he flew off. It all happened in the blink of an eye," he said.

The old man has likely embellished the story somewhat. But the miracle of Karaha-Baruha is well recorded in history books; it is not the subject of question or doubt.

The story continued: "I was the closest to that great beast. Nobody got a better look! It's burned into my mind as sure as the Star Tree is! Even now, I can close my eyes and go back in time, seeing that magnificent creature bathed in the soft glow of the full moon, looking for all the world like the noblest of wolves.

"Now listen good, 'cause I've never told anyone what I'm about to tell you.

"I heard the hero Karaha-Baruha's voice when he summoned that glorious beast.

"`You've done well in holding them off. Leave the rest to my servant, Fenrir,' he said.

"Yes! That great creature was called FENRIR! Fenrir... I haven't said that name in twenty years."

It is said that Karaha-Baruha gave his life to summon the enormous beast. So Zayhi-Bauhi is torn between love and hate for Fenrir. Perhaps this is why he kept the name locked within his heart for two decades.

But why did he want to tell the whole story now?

His answer: "Why not? It is my life's work to let the world know the greatness of Karaha-Baruha.

"More and more adventurers are following in the footsteps of the great hero. That is a good thing, to be sure. But I cannot tolerate the constant and baseless rumors that we will soon see the rise of a hero greater than Karaha-Baruha.

"The great hero is Karaha-Baruha and he alone! If you doubt that, just ask yourself, how many people have summoned Fenrir since that day? Not a single darn one!"

Zayhi-Bauhi's story of Karaha-Baruha and the name Fenrir will surely spread across the world, and one day Fenrir's name will appear beside that of Karaha-Baruha in history books.

"Let the name of the great hero, Karaha-Baruha, not be forgotten! May we exalt the names of Karaha-Baruha and Fenrir on high!"

                      The Summoner Flag quest

This is the detailing of the return of the summoners to Vana'diel.
Summoning magic was forbidden during the war.
The reason was the loss of control of the beast of the full moon, and the death of his summoner.
                      That story is detailed above.
The Carbuncle ruby story is about the return of Summoning magic , and how it is released to Vanadiel thru the ruby of the little rat.
Carbuncles Ruby is for those who hear the voice of those from the void. The avatars.
When the ruby is on your person and and you visit the house of the hero, its special magic will activate.
The story has two paths one with ajido Marujido and one with a Cardian.

The Joker cardian will tell you that you are the one who will return summoning magic to the worl. and that you must first empower it and then use your heart to reveal the truth of Vanadiel.

Ajido-Marujido(My hero) Gives you a similar speach but also warns you of the dangers of becoming like the one who perished sometime before.
He also warns you that what you seek(the avatars) will not be n easy task, and thathe will not always be there to protect you.

                      ...................................................................AVATAR BATTLES.....
The avatar battles are the way fo ryou to become one with the forces from the void and use their powers to aide you in your travels.
They are being researched by the Tarus , they need adventurers to seek the protocrystals ad awaken the slumbering monsters within and best them in combat.
The true story aspect comes from the fact that when you return to the city you recieved the quest in you will be treatedto a cutscene with a mysterious taru and a floating dol.
that doll is the mojo doll of Uran- Mafran former minister of the manuastery.
During that story cutscene he gives you the choice to choose to choose the path of power, that you would gain from the avatars themselves or the rewards of the manuastery.
The scroll to summon the avatars do not come from the manuasterybut from Uran himself. The items are just the researched completed projects of the manuastery researchers.

Now this sets you up for further adventures with Uran later on.

                      Uran-Mafran

While Kuro-Muro was principal of the school of magic Uran Mafran was one of two top students at that time. the other was Shantotto. His test results were impeccable, and showed great promise. He was known as the puppet master for his use of dolls in his magic.
During the war years Zonpa Zipa former Manustery minister was abducted by rogue cardians.
Kuro-Muro chose him to become the new Minister out of haste.
Uran Mafran one simply disappeared, but befre he left he used his magic mojo doll to bewitch the others into forgetting him.
                      He used forbidden magic.
He has reappeared as the protocrystals returned to Vanadiel.
what he seeks isnt for sure. But he is using adventurers to further his goal.

EDIT: Ill add more later, But he is particularily influential in the SMN AF storyline.

So far what I can remember about the story (as a rank 4 bastokan) :

Some dude in bastok likes lizard eggs, beastmen are bad, theres some evil dudes, theres a hot chick who looks like rikku, cid made the airships, and somebody got knocked out in Delkfutt.

                              Honk if you love bastok!

                                At it's most basic... yes.

Cid was an engineer who was the head of the airship project (the airship was originally designed as a war machine btw) apparently one airship was created, geared for war. But then the Shadow Lord was defeated and the Beastmen armies scattered before it could get actual combat use. After the War Jeuno built several airshps using the same design, but removed the weapons from them.

The guy with the lizard eggs is just an idiot, who uses adventurer's for his own personal use.

Beastmen =/= Bad, they're just like the normal races, only they don't really like us.

Rikku chick = Lion, she's an adventurer from the town of Norg, on Elshimo Island, she pays a very large role in some of the later missions.

And the Delkfutt guy was the ambassador to Jeuno from your country... pretty good thing you saved him eh?
