What do you consider Role-play? In my opinion, roleplaying is done solo. You create macro's, bazaar comments and such in the style you like, a good attitude makes people respect your roleplay (Being helpfull, friendly and stuff). The way you like to speak.. And you can express it in your experience points party's. Don't spam it though, lol.

I know this is an old thread but it caught my attention so please forgive the bump

Since there's massive confusion over what roleplay is, I want to set people straight. I come from an established roleplay linkshell on Sylph (a server with a looong roleplay linkshell history).

Roleplay is NOT cybering. In fact, most established and successful roleplay linkshells make PG-13 rules, along with a host of other rules to create a safe and enjoyable roleplay environment.

Roleplay involves creating a history and personality for your character. It's not YOU, the player. It's the character. I'm assuming you've all played other FF games since you're here. In those games, there are characters with unique traits and backgrounds. Being in a roleplay community is similar in that respect. Every roleplayer has a story to tell.

Roleplay is NOT done solo. It depends heavily on interaction with other roleplayers. Simple macros, emoting, etc do not constitute true roleplay. In fact, us hardcore roleplayers are very disturbed when people call that "roleplay." This is why there are various roleplay specific linkshells scattered across various servers. It's unforunate we didn't all choose one server to gather on so we could have a large community ::sigh::.

Roleplayers frown upon use of Internet shorthand, leet speak, and other chatroom lingo. If you're a taru, you're usually expected to talk like one if roleplaying (unless your character background puts you in a different position). Every character is unique.

Most roleplayers do NOT spend 100% of their in game time roleplaying. It's usually a linkshell only kind of thing since roleplayers are a minority in the FFXI community. It would be foolish to speak in character while fighting a major fight or something (although some of the more hardcore people may do that still).

If you'd like to see examples of roleplay, you can check out our site/forums. Maybe that'll help dissolve rumors/misconceptions/prejudices. This linkshell is stationed on the Sylph server by the way...not here. Just posting it so you can see what an established roleplay shell tends to look like. It's also still new so keep that in mind. www.ffxi-legacy.com.
