I don't know exactly, but you may need to register with the Square Enix website beforehand. Did they give you a user name? (it would be four capital letters and four numbers)

Hmm, I don't see anything. I launch Steam, then go to my library and beside FF11 I see a play button, when I click that a medium sized window pops up then vanishes and a smaller one reports: "Steam - Error Failed to contact key server".

It is the exact same problem being reported in this thread: No CD keys available FFXI - Steam Users' Forums

I created an account on that forum in the hopes of posting in that thread but I have to raise my post count before posting there.

Any suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

By constantly retrying I was able to make out what the medium sized window that quickly vanishes says:

"This is your multiplayer CD key for FF11 blah blah. You will need to write it down or copy/paste it and use it once the game loads."

Something along those lines anyway.. but again it quickly vanishes and I receive the error - failed to contact key server

Just when I was about to say how impressed I was with Steam and how much the pc gaming landscape has changed since the days of Warcraft 1 shareware disks

lol - i plan to try it out eventually but most likely on ps3 when issues are all resolved etc. I dont have a PC good enough for it.. I dont think

I have to admit it is somewhat of a scam because if I knew the key wasn't ready etc. I would have probably just bought the game from amazon instead but now Steam has my money and I have no playable game --> nor do I even have a clear reason why it isn't working (other than the fact that it seems others have had a similar issue). Lets hope they reply to my ticket soon.

You can see your key in the library, just right click on it's name in the Library and select "View game CD key", this is for games that require a key. Other misc codes can be found in Properties > DLC tab.

This is for games that have keys like XI. Many others don't have the option because the authentication is directly through your Steam account like Valve games or Skyrim, etc.

Thanks - I gave it a try to see what would happen when I query for the CD key - when I right click on FF11 in the library list and click "View game CD key" the same thing occurs as when I try to launch the game.

Based on what I have read and what I am seeing for whatever reason Steam is not able to successfully obtain a CD key. In that window that quickly vanishes it also says "Requesting key" or something like that but when it fails I receive the error. I am guessing this is a problem on Steam's end and I either need to wait until they resolve it or follow-up with the ticket I opened. Could take a while .../:

If that's the case then maybe there is some problem with SE's key distribution indeed. And it wouldn't be the first time, after all some people got the Vana collection (DVD) with codes that didn't work not that long ago. <_<;


TL;DR > It's definitely on SE's side, not Steam's. <_<

Ya - its not the end of the world - but too bad.... I just hope it gets resolved in a couple days or so.

On another note - I wish they released FF11 for ps3.. I think the ps3 is a good platform for such a game.

OK, now it is running through the first-time setup. Both cd keys were there. One for the game and another for the item that you get when you purchase on steam... Cant remember the name

It's a Bethesda game. There's really no reason to believe it will ever have all the issues resolved, so your best bet is to go with the PC version so the modding community can clean up whatever Bethesda won't.

You are correct... the only problem is that I'm on a 2010 Macbook pro.... if i get a nice gaming rig then no doubt PC is where its at

Hmm, OK I am really confused. I went to the SE website and creates an SE account... So I have a SE userid and password. When I try to run the game it asks me for a ton of other things including a "membername", playonline id and password, member password and SE ID... Where do I get the playonline stuff. What are these various fields ?

and the harp theme while its updating is awesome nostalgia.. I have a feeling I will really like this game. It seems to be more Final Fantasy rooted than the later games like FF13 etc.

Pick your race based on aesthetic appeal. The stat differences are negligible.

I am just googling around regarding this but I might as well just post it here. I plan to play the game on my HDTV via miniDisplayPort/HDMI. I have this already setup in Windows etc. but I noticed someone talking about this "windowing" program. Should I bother with that, or will I be able to just setup the game as I like naturally. I guess I will figure it out soon... 85%

SE has done a very bad job of keeping FFXI's engine up to date. I think the only reason there even is an official windowed mode is so they'd get a stamp saying it worked on windows 7 or something. Someone who knows what the hell I'm talking about get in here and correct me.

Point is, SE is bad about keeping the game modernized. Expect problems, expect them to be fixed via third party programs, namely Windower.
