I think it's the minus key.

You'll want to configure something in one of the miscellaneous menus(I think that's where it is). Somewhere buried in there is a setting to switch to compact keyboard mode, which will make life easier(for example, it enables WASD among other things).

Is there a way to make it so I control my toon with the arrows? I never really learnt how to use wasd. I will do though if I have to

Not that I'm aware of. I think the arrow keys control the camera angle.

I'd honestly recommend a controller, it makes things a lot more intuitive. Just grab a PS2 dual-shock and a $5 USB adapter for it and you're pretty much good to go.

Oh also, how can I minimise the game? I had to exit the game to be able to type here, I normally run games on Windowed full screen so it's easier to tab out, but I couldn't find an option to do so.

You should be able to find a PlayStation to USB adapter in most electronics shops. Call ahead before you go to make sure they have some in stock - not every shop sells them here in the US, and that probably holds true in the UK as well.

There's a setting in the FFXI Configuration Tool which allows you to run in windowed mode (launch this from the Windows Start menu before you start the game).

You'd have better luck just buying one off Amazon. This looks similar to the one I got, although I may have purchased mine through NewEgg now that I think about it.

Yeah...FFXI and tabbing out don't play nice together. There's a config menu outside the game(check your start menu > ffxi > etc etc) where you can start the game in windowed mode, but then it has to stay in windowed mode. SE really botched making the jump to PC. I'd recommend getting the unofficial Windower at some point if you're gonna stick with FFXI for the long haul. It can give you functionality closer to what you're looking for than the official windowed mode can.

It's technically against the rules to use it, so if you decide to make use of it just be sure to never mention it in-game. You probably shouldn't bother worrying about it right now though. Just get in there and get your feet wet.

I just use a Logitech Dualshock controller myself. It cost me 19.95 at BestBuy. I've burned through about 3 of them in my 9 years of playing. They last... but not forever.

I need a cheap one or an adaptor tbh, I won't be able to afford both the game pack plus a controller.
