  • Question of a beginner...

    Hello
Started playing Final Fantasy XI recently, I searched guides but didn't find answers to some basic questions...

1/ How to level up ?
I am currently level 10, farmed some mobs to gain level...but is there other ways to level up ? I heard that dungeons can be done but how can I find players ? What is the point of dungeons, do the ennemies give more xp to level up ?

2/ How to gain health and mana ?
As a red mage I learned Cure, it gives a few hp, but I loose all my mana after 3-4 fights, so i decided to die to respawn to recover all my mana to return to the zone where I kill monsters...Not sure this is intended by the game

    3/ How can I travel faster ?
As a Taru I have some problems to go from the respawn crystal to my leveling zone...

4/Is there a way to find the latest selling price of an item in the auction house without putting the auction, checking the latest prices, cancelling, going to my house, and putting the item in the auction house again with the right price ?

Thanks a lot for your help

1 to level up you go and kill stuff. You can go into parties and get exp faster that way. If you want to loom for other players all you need to is type "/sea all". Or you can put on certain requirements, such as a level gqp, zone, name, or job. To do so just put the zone name, player name, or job between the sea and all. For the level gap it will ne #-# for easier finding. You can also do /sea #-# "job" all to see if there are any jobs on that level range you wish to party with.

2 to gain HP/mo type /rest and your character will take a knee allowing you to gain exp.every 10 seconds, but the first tick takes 20 seconds.

    3. To travel faster you cab outpost.warp or.take a chocobo when you hit lvl 20 and do the.quest

To clarify a few things, EXP is gained from fighting monsters, doing Fields of Valor quests at outposts and doing certain missions. Mainly, you'll be killing monsters.

Dungeons serve different purposes, many serve as places to go for story based missions given to you by the guards. In windurst you can find rank mission guards to the left of the fellow that issues you Signet at each gate. You may also be sent in there for quests. They're not instances and aside from story-based missions and special content, there's no requirements to just mosey into a place like the Horutoto Ruins which you'll find entry points to littered around East and West Sarutabaruta.

You may come upon a dead in where you can proceed no further in these or see a point of entry you cannot enter for some dungeons, These are either points where a cutscene may occur for a mission or quest which will need to be activated in order to trigger the event.

Some dungeons contain BCNMs, which are special fights you can use Beastmen Seals on to buy an orb in Jeuno and enter them to fight for certain rewards. These generally start around level 30, but they can also pertain to missions as well.

Takelli explained resting.and searching for other people to group up with.

To clarify his point on travel. FFXI kinda makes you work for that. The first and best thing to do is get your first Outpost Warp. You'll need to request to do a supply quest in from the Signet fellow to do this. After that, seek out the outpost in Sarutabaruta to turn in your supplies. Every outpost that Windurst currently controls under the conquest system is one you can quest, but unless something's changed, I believe these can still only be quested once per day. Its a hit or miss affair, but check the world map to see what's open and what you can get to within reason. If Bastok or Sandoria control the outpost, you're out of luck.

There's also the quest to get the chocobo Takelli mentioned, but another point of intereswt is the three crags - Holla, Dem and Mea. Mea is that bony looking tower in Tahrongi Canyon. If you see a hovering crystal there, touch it and anyone with the White Magic "Teleport Mea" will be able to bring you there with that spell.

There's more. As you progress through the game more travel options open up to you. If you're curious about airship access, look into the Kazham Key quest and Rank missions. For now, just focus on leveling and getting the Outposts and Teleport crystals you can.

Though I guess Warp Scrolls earned from Conquest points and warp items are also an option for you, but those might be a bit to costly for you right now. You're going to be dabbling in White and Black Magic anyway as you level subjobs for RDM, so you'll have more magic to help you get around in Warp and the Teleport spells in time.

At those levels, your best bet for optimizing experience gained is to use the Field Manuals (or, in the case of certain dungeons, Grounds Tomes). Abyssea has made the game rather top-heavy, so you're not going to typically find very many people in lower-level areas; it is worth seeking to group with anybody you do find, however.

Since you're new, it's probably worth re-iterating the following points, as well: Always make sure you have Signet for a leveling session, get an Empress Band as soon as you can, and never, under any circumstance whatsoever, drop your Beastmen Seals. You will be able to store them with an NPC in Port Jeuno once you get there, and they can prove worthwhile in earning Gil later on down the road.

One more point: you're probably going to want to unlock your subjob access through the quest in Selbina; the subjob quest in Mhaura is disproportionately difficult for the level you'd take it at.

2/ How to gain health and mana ?
As a red mage I learned Cure, it gives a few hp, but I loose all my mana after 3-4 fights, so i decided to die to respawn to recover all my mana to return to the zone where I kill monsters...Not sure this is intended by the game
No, it's not! Try the text command "/heal" in-game. Your character will start resting, and after about 10 seconds, will slowly start restoring HP and MP. Trying to move will cancel resting, as will losing HP, so take care to find a safe place out of the way beforehand for you to recover.

        3/ How can I travel faster ?
As a Taru I have some problems to go from the respawn crystal to my leveling zone...
Us Tarutaru are quite sprightly for our size! All races have an equal base movement speed.

As you go up in levels, you will find methods of transportation open up to you surprisingly fast!

At each of the crags in La Theine Plateau (Holla), Konschtat Highlands (Dem), and Tahrongi Canyon (Mea) are Telepoints which you can receive gate crystal key items from; this will allow you to be transported back to these areas via the White Mage "Teleport" line of spells.

At level 20, you can do a quest in Upper Jeuno to obtain a Chocobo License, valid until the end of time. This will allow you to rent Chocobos wherever they are available. If you have tons of time and money, you can also take the sequel quest that allows you to try your hand at Chocobo Raising. (It should be noted that the quest itself doesn't take the time and money that I specified earlier. At least, not nearly as much as the simulation of raising a living being. It's probably an accurate parallel to real life.)

Once you progress to Rank 4 in your Nation, you are able to obtain an Airship Pass that allows you to transit between the ports of each of the three starting nations and Jeuno. There is also a Kazham Airship Pass that you are able to obtain much sooner by bringing the keys to treasure chests in Ghelsba, Palborough, and Giddeus to the Kazham Airship agency, but this isn't exactly "faster travel" so much as "getting access to Kazham and its attached island in the first place."

If you can gain membership to the Tenshodo, and have access to all three add-on scenarios (A Crystalline Prophecy, A Moogle Kupo d'Etat, A Shantotto Ascension), you will be able to obtain a level 30 piece of equipment called the Nexus Cape, which gives you the personal ability to teleport to the location of your party leader, assuming that they are within the Middle Lands (and not the Near East) and that they are neither within a dungeon nor in the past. Various other restrictions apply, but it's quite a convenient item.

If you have been to Abyssea, there are Abyssean NPCs in various town areas that can teleport you to the relative vicinity of an Abyssean Cavernous Maw which you have used previously.

If you find yourself dying just to get back to your Home Point, try using Warp instead. Gate Guards give you Scrolls of Instant Warp (one-shot Warp items) for low amounts of Conquest Points, though even better than that, Artisan Moogles even give you one Scroll of Instant Warp per day for free, just by talking with them!

The aforementioned Field Manuals and Grounds Tomes also have Repatriation options: for 50 tabs (which you can obtain through training with the Field Manuals and Grounds Tomes), you can be teleported back to your home nation. Grounds Tomes also offer a "Homing Instinct" option at the same price, to warp you back to your Home Point.

Finally, do supply missions for your home nation. If your nation controls any given region, you are able to take a supply mission to that region, where you take supplies to that region's outpost (you'll note the area where the outpost is by bringing up the Regional Map, and looking for the area with the miniature nation flag under its name). After completing a supply mission, you will be able to be transported instantly to that outpost via your home nation's Regional Transportation Service in exchange for some Gil. You can also use a Return Ring to warp to the outpost of a region that you are in currently, provided that you've already done that region's supply mission and your nation controls that region.

Oh. And one more thing. Once you reach a certain level, if the "Ease of Exploration" Super Kupower is in effect, you will be able to use the Explorer Moogles given to travel between each of the three starting nations, as well as Selbina and Mhaura, for a low, flat Gil cost.

And I'm still probably forgetting something. Nowadays, it's not exactly hard to get to where you want to go with just a hop skip and a jump, 99% of the time.

4/Is there a way to find the latest selling price of an item in the auction house without putting the auction, checking the latest prices, cancelling, going to my house, and putting the item in the auction house again with the right price ?
Er. In-game, if you go to the Auction House and select "Bid," and then go to the appropriate item category for the item you intend to sell, you can check that item's "Price History" to see A) how much it's selling for, and B) how often it's selling. You can subsequently use this information to go back to the main Auction House menu, selecting Sell, and putting the item you want to sell up for auction.

Outside of the game, there is also a website called FFXIAH which people use to check the going prices for any given item on their server ahead of time.

Thanks a lot for your help
        Not a problem!

I remember reading another story about how somebody else would run into his Mog House for restoration when he first started the game. XD

I love reading that shit just to bring me back to the game... I still remember when I first started, 8 or 9n years ago or so... The world was so immense, i had no clue what ws going on, and there was SO much I didn't know. Thinking back at what was learned and the total expanse of the game, from CoP through the Shantotto Ascension... Man... mind blowing all the details, storylines, game plans, etc... I truly loved the game, up until the day i quit... Wow... good times...

Enjoy the game!!!! Come see us with questions!!!
