  • New player saying hi

I feel like I'm coming to the party well after midnight, but I'm taking the plunge and trying out FFXI. I've read comment after comment on other sites about how engaging the story is, so it's time I see for myself. Lack of engaging story is what has made me get bored and leave many of the other games I've played.

I've been trying out FFXIV, but from what I've heard it pales in comparison to the depth of FFXI. I'll probably continue to dabble in FFXIV (it is free after all!), but I'd like to get into a meatier game.

Anyway, that's all for now. I'm sad because I thought the game was all downloaded and ready to go so I could play it tonight, but after going through the craziness that is creating a PlayOnline account, the game now tells me it has about 7 hours of patching to do.

Once I log in and make a character I'll be able to say who I am and where to find me!

    Until then...

Yeah, you kinda missed the boat but the good news is that the swim across the ocean isn't so bad these days.

Take your time and enjoy the trip.

Welcome to the forums. If you want engaging story, FFXI definitely delivers. The difficulty of the story missions has dropped greatly because Square removed the level cap on lot of stuff, meaning high level players can and probably will trivialize the fights. On the flip side it means getting missions done is a lot easier and faster.

Regardless, it's never too late to give the game a shot. I hope you enjoy it. I recommend you make your character in a server where other forum members are so they can help you out.

Thanks for the encouragement! My game finished patching while I was asleep, now I just have to wait until after work to log in and make my character. Boo.

From my time browsing through the forums it seems that folks on the Valefor server are fairly active here so I think I'm going to give that server a shot.

I look forward to getting started later on!

Jessamy has been born on Valefor. Hooray!

I've only just started. I spent the better part of an hour tweaking the graphics. Everything looked smooshed until I found the right resolution. A side effect of all that fiddling is that I am now an expert at logging into PlayOnline with its many steps and clicks.

          Back to exploring Bastok...

Thanks! The city is huge. I thought my map was of the entire city, not just one section. I haven't gotten much into the story of the city yet, but the look of it makes me think it was the inspiration for Limsa Lominsa in FFXIV.

I have to say the graphics in this game are considerably better than I thought they would be. YouTube videos don't do the game justice at all. I think my favorite moment so far was sunrise in South Gustaberg. The lighting change was fantastic.

I may be joining the game late, but I'm very pleased so far.

If you think Bastok is big, wait till you see Windurst. It's annoyingly big, but at least you can teleport around there a bit. Sunrise and sunset in certain zones have some of the best views in the game (anything that overlooks water or a canyon of any kind). Foggy weather is really cool to see too when it is paired with the morning hours.

Glad to see you are enjoying yourself so far.

Windurst is the only starter city where you can go from any zone in the city directly to any other zone without using the Mog House shortcut. Can't go from Port San d'oria to Southern San d'Oria or from Port Bastok to Bastok Mines. Personally I find Bastok to be the most annoying nation to move around in because of the drawbridge.

The drawbridge that only affects you going to the mog house in Port Bastok (which no one uses), that draw bridge?

Aside from the teleportation, the zones in Windy are just bigger.

I use it whenever I need to get from anywhere in Bastok (say, Bastok Mines via Exploration Moogle) to North Gustaberg for whatever reason, since even waiting on the drawbridge takes less time on average than going the long way around.

Mog house shortcut? Did I miss something?

The scale of Bastok is definitely sinking in. I ran around town last night for over an hour just talking to NPCs and getting to know the lay of the land. In fact I didn't quite finish so that's what I'm going to continue doing right now.

There is a quest, not sure the name anymore, that allows you to enter the mog house anywhere in the city and exit it somewhere else in the same city. There is a seperate quest for each of the cities (Bastok, Windurst, Sandy, Jeuno).
