Are Credit Cards the only thing I can use to pay with?

Im not asking if there are time cards or anything like that, I know the answer is no. I played for a good year or so back when FFXI first came out and at that point I was about 14 using my dads CC.At the moment im unemployed and have no CC and not really enough income to warrant one. Im wondering if there are any kinds of gift cards I can use to pay for it. That or reloadable cards.

The type without activation and monthly fee's if at all possible. Something I can load up with about 2 months worth of payments and then not have to worry for awhile.

You could get a pre paid credit card which only allows you to spend the money you put onto the card.
From personal experience I suggest Virgin money prepaid card. Each transaction cost me 10% of the total deducted from the cards balance.

Virgin are quite a well known company you can get your parent's/guardians/siblings to get it on your behalf if you are too young yourself. The website say's it wold make a nice gift. It cost me 10 pounds up front and it had an empty balance when i got it.

I'm not sure on your location and such but a prepaid card sounds like the way forward. I used one from 2006 until last year when I changed my personal bank account and I had a new debit card which works sort of like a cc.
Check your personal banking/debit card for the logos that SE payments support you may get lucky like I did.

As of the update to the new payment system, PayPal can now be used to pay, as well as Ultimate Gamer cards.

EDIT: Beware with the new payment system, you have to overpay to get Crysta unless you have a JP account. JP accounts can buy Crysta in any increment, NA and EU accounts can only buy in increments of 500, with minimum monthly fees being 899 or 1295 Crysta. You will have leftover company currency you can't spend completely, and can't convert back to real money, so SE will get to collect interest on it. If you do pay with credit card, you can't direct pay anymore, you have to go through Click & Buy, which has a notoriously bad reputation (F rating at the BBB), and your bank will likely charge an international transaction fee (C&B is in the UK) and/or lock your credit card for fraud detection whenever they see a charge from them. Chase-owned banks are instructed to nuke credit cards that C&B bills, because they are a red-flagged company.

The new game is getting SE to accept your money, it's no longer FFXI. My account is currently inactive because I'm having trouble getting a payment method to use with my JP account from launch. They won't take my non-JP credit card anymore, and I need to register a Japanese mailing address to enable Crysta (via WebMoney), when I was able to pay with WebMoney before. That extra annoyance on top of the markup SuToCorp charges for WebMoney cards has left me taking a break and seeing what they do to the billing system in the future. I can't find another source of WebMoney cards to use on a regular basis.

UPDATE: So I got my account back in February after fighting with JP support via email and Google translate since a week before my original post here. I can pay again because I got them to do a region change on my account by transferring my PlayOnline ID from my Japanese SquareEnix Account to my American one. They said they'd only ever do it once, but it worked and I can now pay in US Dollars with the usual payment methods.
