Re: Im a level 5, looking for some advise
/befriend add name
That's how you add people. Make sure you've talked with someone before you go shooting that around, though. People will shoot your friend requests if you don't take some time to talk to them.
You can only change servers with an existing character for a fee, otherwise you may want to delete this character and just start over somewhere else. Shiva should have a decent population. New players have a misconception that starter towns are supposed to be heavily populated and that's really not the case. Most players hang out in the cities of Jeuno and Aht Urghan White gate. You'll be ready to visit Jeuno at about level 18, after you've done some work on your first support job.
Also, its "Bastok."

Re: Im a level 5, looking for some advise
To get window mode go to the Playonline folder in the start menu and in the FFXI folder open FFXI Config tool. Simply check the start in window mode and you are set. However it can cause frame rate issues on a lower end machine.
As for parties, more often than not people are solo leveling through to about level 20. You can always seek for a party (in the menu select party > seek party) You won't really ever get a party pre level 10, and as I mentioned they are rare 10-20. Since you are from bastok the quickest way to level is use the FOV manual in south gustaberg (at the mines entrance/exit) You can do the worm one until about level 10 (by killing tunnel worms until 6-7 and stone worms until 10.) from there you can take the goblin page and go climb the hill (Vomp Hill on the map) this can take you to about level 13-14.
Now you will want to move to Konstacht Highlands by traveling through North Gustaberg (from the far west path on the map) make your way to the FOV book located at the Crag of Dem. This will see you through to about level 20.
Just some key points
Always have signet on. You get it from gate gaurds.
When you have enough points buy and empress band (or emperor band if you find that you can't play every day)
Get reraise buff from the FOV books, as well as refresh if you are an MP based job.
Now I am not sure what job you are, but the leveling outline for soloing to 20 I gave will work with WAR,THF,MNK,RDM WHM and BLM may have a tougher time (since they don't really have access to decent melee weapons). BLM can be solo'd by killing worms they are stationary and will not chase you if you need to run away. WHM's can usually get PT's easy at low levels but if not you can still FOV with them they just take a little longer to burn through pages than the other classes I listed.
To change worlds, when you make a character you have the option of choosing a world to join during the creation process. For the most part worlds won't differ to much, the game ATM is more high level than low level, and with the recent cap rise, the nerf to COP, the added areas of abyesea and walk of echoes the high level players are busy exploring and leveling their jobs.
It will likely be several weeks before the lower levels get populated enough to build decent parties. (another reason why most people wait till level 20 to start grouping.)

Re: Im a level 5, looking for some advise
Screw all that "solo to 20" nonsense. Put your party flag up around level 11 or 12 and you'll eventually get a party in Valkurm Dunes. He's gonna have to learn partying eventually, so might as well have him do it in the zone that's educated countless new players before him. I'm a firm believer in a solid Dunes Education.

Re: Im a level 5, looking for some advise
I think maybe if you switch to the compact keyboard mode that'll work, but I'll be honest, as weird as the FFXI control scheme may seem to you (using directional keys and the number pad), once you get used to it, it really works well. I prefer it to the WASD mode that other MMOs use. Using the mouse in FFXI is not much fun, so I've found that just hovering my hand over that right side of my keyboard seems to work really well.
That or you can use a controller, which is pretty awesome, but I still prefer the default control scheme for the PC after years of use.

Re: Im a level 5, looking for some advise
WASD not being immediately accessible weirded me out and kept me immobile for a good five minutes the first time I logged in. To fix it, go to Menu > Config > Misc.2 > Keyboard Type:Compact. It makes things a tad more intuitive for me and I suspect you'll find the same if you're looking for the convenience of WASD.
I've also done the PS2 controller > USB adapter thing and that works out pretty well too. No configuration necessary either and it's a tad more comfy, although personally I find it's no good when I need to be in full on mage-mode.
Fun tip: If you bring up the map in the city there should be sections labeled "residence". This is where you will find your Mog House. It's important. You can store things there and you can change jobs there as well. Check it out.Server: Midgardsormr -> Quetzalcoatl -> Valefor
