    Re: Hello

    Welcome to Dreams in Vana'diel.

You set up your PlayOnline ID when you first install the game (during the PlayOnline Viewer setup process).

You'll need a valid credit card, and the registration code(s) that came with the game to get up and running.

Technically, all versions of the game. no matter where you acquire the software, come with a 30 day free trial. The trial version is for all intents and purposes the full game, the only difference is that your first 30 days are not charged (and if you cancel before the 30 days is up you never get charged). Once the 30 day trial elapses, your account just switches over into normal billing, with your first month possibly pro-rated, depending on how many days of the previous month were covered by your free trial.

Just install the "trial" software and take it from there. You don't have to do anything to convert it into a full version other than buying the registration codes for expansions (if you want those, which you probably will at some point).

It's pretty unlikely you'd be able to hit much of the story/mission contents from the expansion pacts in 30 days, but, no, they should not be locked out.

For the first 30 days, you should have plenty to do just getting used to FFXI, leveling your character, and exploring what area of Vana'diel you can without worrying about expansion pacts.

Nope. Just install everything, including the expansions (I don't even think the Vana'diel Collection allows you the option of skipping them anyhow, since you obviously have the codes already).

The expansion pack content is integrated into the gameplay experience - without the appropriate expansions unlocked, you can not enter certain regions of the game world (specific to each expansion), and there's a few other things that probably won't even come up in your first 30 days - like unlocking extra jobs such as Blue Mage. But otherwise it's the same whether you have expansions unlocked or not, and you're still playing on the same servers as everyone else.

And you should be aware that due to SE's billing practices, it's best to start your account in the first week of the month, maybe from the 3rd to the 10th of the month, because that 30 days won't really be 30 days unless you cancel. They only bill at the start of the month and don't pro-rate the first billed month. (at least that's how I understand it, feel free to explain how I'm wrong)

If you have a ton of free time, then yes. It is a fun game to play, but after gridning to level 37 (twice, some time three), then to lvl 75, it can become... repetitive.

But, as soon as you have a lvl 75, so much of the game opens up for you. You will still be needing to take a lot of time to play the game as most end game gear takes a very long time to obtain. But, once you actually obtain the gear, you will enjoy the game even more then when you have first started.

But, seeing as how FFXIV will be coming out in a year, you wont have that much time to obtain any of that gear. Most of the player base, from what I understand and have read, will be moving to FFXIV when it does come out. There will be a lot of players who will stay on FFXI, and there will be server merges, but FFXI will still be kicking. Some players that left FFXI, will even return to the game as FFXIV (Can I just call it Rapture, its much easier.), might not be all its cracked up to be. Rapture has the same (looks wise, not name wise.) races, as well as what some people say that a few "zones" will look like. But, as Rapture's "zones" have yet to be release, they don't really know.

... I'm going to stop rambling on now... haha XD

                          I like it.

BUT, it's not for people who expect instant gratification.

Over a year ago, my Liinkshell was doing something the American players called "Zeni Notorious Monsters", where a series of lower tiered monsters must be defeated in order to fight higher tier ones. We tried it a few times, never got past tier I, then we ended up getting distracted by other things, and dropped ZNM altogether.

Quite a few months back, I got the the idea of restarting the ZNM runs and do them more systematically, bounce the idea around, recruited inside and outside of the LS, and finally got it rolling. It took seven and half month, at one run a week, to finally reach a tier IV monster last night, Tinnin--and we lost.

However, I'm happy to finally have reached tier IV. And, I enjoyed the fight--we now have a pretty good idea of how a group like us can defeat it next time, too. (We have three more pop items. heh.)

                          Is that appealing?

                          * * *

Most endgame LS won't take seven and half months to reach their first tier IV, but we're not an endgame LS. (Or, maybe we are now, but just not a terribly strong one. *shrug*)

Some people will come away from a story like mine and think FFXI isn't enjoyable unless one has a powerful LS full of extremely well geared players. Some will believe it's all too much trouble and best not even to try.

Others, though, will find that the challenges--how to make the best of what you have--combined with the patience and perseverance required--to be exactly what they enjoy. Best of all, the bonds we form with friends online achieving difficult objectives are something which cannot be found in games with "easy mode", in my opinion.

FFXI's difficulty scales well for all but the beginners and the most hardcore players. It's slightly too daunting for newbies who have no previous experiences with MMOPRGs. And, not all that impressive to those people who spends thousands of dollars to buy well geared Lv.75 accounts (against the rules, by the way) and third party tools (VERY against the rules) and control two to four characters simultaneously at all times and have defeated all but one or two super monsters ("HNM") in the game already.

In between though, most of us can find challenges just at the edge of our and our friends' abilities. That, is something I come to appreciate about FFXI lately.
