  • Complete newbie needs help

Ok, I've been perusing these forums most of the morning and cannot find help for the COMPLETE newb. I have watched the videos for the new player on the play online site and stll have some basic questions.

I am playing on a PC.

    1) I notice on the quick start card and in the config menu that wasd are acceptable keys for movement, but it says "config 2" how in the heck to I activate config 2.
    2) is the game noticeably better / easier to control with a console style controller? How do you seamlessly move from the controller to the keyboard for things like /check etc...?
    3) Is there a totally and completely new player newbie guide anywhere? There doesn't seem to be in game tutorials and the videos don't cover some tihngs.

Thanks for any and all help!

    1) Ctril - should bring up your menu, then just toggle over to config. Go down to "misc 2" and you should see the option for keyboard.
    2) I use a ps2 controller and I wouldn't have it any other way. However, a lot of people play on full-size standard keyboards. Depends on your preference.
    3) Oh hai, lookie here:

I see the section you are talking about for the keyboard, but I can't switch it to use wasd movement. There doesn't seem to be a way to switch to "config b" or whatever.

I did read the post you linked, it was a good indication of the beginning quests, I am having more difficulty setting things up than actually playing hehe.

Thank you for the response. I will hook up a controller tonight.

If you play alot of console games, you might find the controller more comfortable , but if you play more games that would require keyboard commands, you might find a keyboard better.

I myself use a PS3 controller. I'm pretty sure I even used a 360 controller at one point but since I had gotten used to the PS3 controller it didn't feel right.

This is a old post from Ameroth from the below listed topic. This popped in my head when I read the questions you were asking.

Holding a shoulder button and scrolling with the direction pad/analog stick will never be faster than me pressing Ctrl+8: Headbutt and 1 second later hitting ctrl+2 for bludgeon. To each their own.
So basically it all revolves around preference.

If you switch it to compact, it works just fine for WASD movement. I just tested it.

interesting, so to get wasd I have to switch it to compact keyboard! I didn't try that, was thinking it would mess up all other keys if I did that. thank you, I will try that as well.

I play on a laptop, so I use the compact keyboard config. I use wasd for running and the arrow keys for changing the camera angle. I have played that way for a long time and it works well for me.

I was pretty quick at doing my abilities on the controller.. so I think the preface can be argued depending on the person..

Just in case you haven't gotten enough information on this yet, when you play with a controller, practically the only thing you use the keyboard for is chatting. You can still type in /check if you want, but usually you'll just target who/whatever you want to check, bring up the target menu, and select the Check option from there. It's the same with pretty much anything else you'd type.

If the controller doesn't have a button assigned directly to the action (e.g. L3 on a PS2 controller for /heal), you do it through a menu, maybe a macro. There are only a handful of commands you can only get to through typing (/blockaid, /ignorepet, etc.). So if you're using a controller, you spend 90% of your time with both hands on it, and set it down temporarily to type when you need to.

I would say using the keyboard vs. using the controller is two different kinds of easy. The controller is a lot more comfortable, and it's got a nice rhythm to it when you get used to it. The keyboard can be more efficient if you really work at it, and if you're a heavy chatter, you won't have to be switching back and forth all the time. It's pretty much a matter of taste.

                    Re: Complete newbie needs help

I'd also like to add that the game was originally a console game so it will naturally feel more comfortable if you play with a pad. But as everyone else has said it is all down to a matter of preference. Try out both to see what you prefer.
