Actually, I heard a person beg me to come to the Dunes from Windurst to DPS for an exp party, and I didn't even have my LFG sign up. I've heard from others that Asura has a lot of actively looking leveling parties, so I'm not too worried. I will solo until I do get that invite, though

And the loot system seems very similar to my previous MMOs which is a good sign! Hopefully my subjob items drop

EDIT: I don't remember where it is in the config, but there's a setting to auto lock on target during battle. Turn that off.

    Thank you!

    Wow, the Dunes were amazing!

I got into 2 great leveling parties and went from 12-18 in a couple hours! Level sync is awesome!

Now, if I want to go back to Windurst, do I have to do that whole long trek again? What's the best way to get back?

Also, I need to get Warp for my BLM now. I can get it in Bastok from a quest, but it requires Bastok reputation of 2 to complete the quest. I started in Windurst, so can I still get the reputation in Bastok? Do I gain rep just by doing quests?

Where's your home point? If you're still in the Dunes, and your home point is closer to (or in) Windurst, you could change jobs to something <= level 4 (so you don't lose XP) and die.

If you happened to do a supply run on your way there, an outpost warp could speed things up a bit.

If you picked up your Teleport-Mea crystal at the Crag of Mea on the way, you might be able to find someone to give you a Teleport-Mea, which will also get you closer.

But barring all that, you're stuck taking the ferry and walking all the way back again.

Yes, reputation (AKA fame) is earned just by doing quests. There are tons of easy quests you can do in each city, and a lot of them are repeatable. Reputation 2 doesn't take long to get at all. I'd recommend one of two quests: either "Only the Best" in Selbina (because you can buy millioncorn or La Theine cabbages at a vendor, and then just spam them to the guy, and it raises both Bastok and San D'Oria fame), or "Mom, the Adventurer?" in Bastok (because it's easy, repeatable, and profitable; you buy a ring from the jewelry store for cheap on the first run, and then you get a Fire Crystal and more gil than you spent, so every run after that pays for itself; also, you can't do this quest any more once you hit reputation 2, so that's an easy way to tell).

And all this stuff should be fairly easy to find on the wiki. I'd provide individual links again, but there are a lot of them and I'm feeling lazy.

There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

I did a supply run to the outpost in West Saruta, how do I outpost warp back there? Also, my homepoint is in Selbina, so that won't work.

And yes, no links are needed, I can find them no problem

Okay, that's not going to be much help. I was thinking more of the outpost in the Dunes or Buburimu. If you'd done one of those, you'd be able to talk to the outpost vendor/warper and head home from one of those two locations. With just the Saruta one, you wouldn't really be saving much time (taking the ferry and walking back to the W. Saruta outpost and then warping from there).

While you're in the area, you might want to grab your key items for Teleport-Holla and Teleport-Dem in La Theine and Konschtat, respectively. And on your way back home, if you haven't, grab the one for Teleport-Mea. They might not do you much good while you're still mostly hanging out in Windurst, but you never know, and you'll need them sometime anyway.

            Ellipses, you're the best

I'm getting my Chocobo License ATM, but I want to actually raise my own. How much would it cost to raise one so I can ride it and how long, approximately? I see days in the wiki article, is that Earth days or in-game days? I just want my own chocobo to ride on in the field for now (no races), so I don't think I need super great stats. I notice "Strength" increases running speed, though. Does anyone know if that's just for racing or is it for riding in the field, too? I was under the impression that all chocobos have the same speed in the field and stats didn't influence that...

On this wiki page, some guy talks about selling cards for chocobo colours or something? I'm lost, but here's what he said:

-Alright a lot of speculation here and I will add my own as well but I have more experience than most in this respect and this idea taht choco color is not an inherited trait is completely absurd. I have personally raised 9 chocobos, 1 Yellow at first and then a male and female of Red, Blue, Green, and Black. I sell a ton of cards on my server and offer the guarantee that if the chocobo does not turn out to be the color of the parents on day 19 then I will give them a new set of cards. I have sold hundreds of sets of cards easily and here seems to be the fault in your theory that color is a factor of stats.

What does he mean by "cards"?

Re: New player, looking for some guidance on Asura and leveling partners.

I'm not a chocobo breeding expert or anything, but here goes.

I think you can raise a chocobo for free. You get your first egg for free by doing the quest that starts the whole thing, and you don't have to buy food for it or anything. You can ignore its hunger and sickness and mood and all that, and you'll have a bird you can call at the end. It just won't have very good stats. There is an expense for the chocobo whistle that lets you call it in the field, and I think an expense to get cards for it etc.

The time is in Earth days. It takes over a month total.

The stats are not just for racing. My bird was horribly slow before I started getting its strength up. Now it's tolerable, but it's still not as fast as a rental (all rentals are the same, but not all raised chocobos are).

The cards are the way you breed chocobos. When you're done raising one, you can get as many cards for it as you like, and/or buy cards from other people. You take a male and female card to some NPC, and those two chocobos mate, and you get the resulting egg. Eggs you buy from NPCs and the one you get from the initial quest are random, so breeding with cards is more likely to get you the color you want, and I'm pretty sure it effects the stats too (parents with high strength lead to a chick with higher base strength, etc.).

Ellipses, you've been great! I'm back after not asking a question for a while, because I'm here to ask about my RSE for my NIN. I'm going to get the key to open the chest for the Magical Pattern, but what I want to know is if I can have more than one of those keys in my inventory at a time? Here's a link to the key I wish to carry 3 or 4 of, just in case:

Nope. You'll notice that it's marked both "Rare" (RA) and "Exclusive" (EX). Rare means that you can only have one in your possession at a time, Exclusive means you can't sell/trade/send it to another character.

I don't mean to take away the conversation here... but I am a new player and this all looks pretty overwhelming to me. Is it easier when you start to play? Cause right now I am having 2nd thoughts of playing this game... it seems really confusing reading about this stuff.

                      Tutorial video from Square-Enix:
                      http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/newplayer/index.html

                      Tutorial NPCs (non-player characters) in-game:
                      - Alaune: Southern San d'Oria (G-10)
                      - Gulldago: Bastok Markets (D-11)
                      - Selele: Windurst Woods (K-10)

If you have specific questions, feel free to ask. Wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to ask other players in-game for suggestions on what a new players should do, either. (Keep in mind not all players speak English.)

Oh, you probably won't anyway, but don't ask for money. If anything, ask how to make some gil instead.
                      Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
                      yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

Lol, I've come so far since this thread (not really <_<)...

To Siora: Don't let all this intimidate you. FFXI does have a steep learning curve, but it's all worth it! I played it once in October 08 and I said "Forget it." because the whole system seemed so foreign and difficult to me. Was a big mistake cause I came back several months later and now love the game because I put the effort into learning (and asking, thanks much Ellipses and everyone else). If you need help, ask here and soon enough you'll be familiar with most everything in the game.

                        And to update:

                        NIN37
                        WAR30
                        BLM20

Now levelling RNG16 to 37, maybe 75 if I don't go COR and levelling Woodworking which is at 20 :D
