I see these debuff icons and buff icons up at the top of my screen, but there's no description or anything. Is there a link that shows what each icon means?

And how do I cancel casting a spell without moving? Poison seems to cast even if I do move, but that's just probably server lag and it's such a quick spell.

EDIT: More questions! I want to increase my rank in Windurst, but in order to do so, I need to take part in missions. Where can I start doing missions?

This doesn't list the icons themselves, but here is a list of effects, and each one has its icon on its page. Also, if you press your switch-window button (By default, + on PC, I think triangle on PS2, no idea on XBox) twice, you'll get a cursor up on that list of effects. You can move it over each one, and the window at the very top of the screen will tell you what it is.

This is also how you cancel buffs. Switch window to the row of effects, move to the one you want to remove, press your confirm button. Not all buffs can be removed, and obviously, debuffs can't be.

Hit the switch window button again to get back to normal, not-on-any-window mode. (The first press puts it on your chat log, where you can expand it and switch-window again to read separate logs like /say, /tell, etc.; the second press puts it on your status effects row; the third press brings you back to normal.)

/heal or the equivalent button (Ctrl-H or just H on PC depending on your settings, L3 on PS2, no idea on XBox). You're likely not going to be fast enough to cancel Poison no matter what you do. By the time you realize you don't want to be casting it, you won't have time to react.

Can Posion kill your character? I was out of combat and Poison was ticking and it faded right at 1 hp.

CTRL + R, ALT + R should work too if I remember correctly.

Does CTRL + R work too? I never tried that. I do use ALT + R religiously though. lol

CTRL and ALT are completely interchangeable except for macros.

Conversely, I've known this the entire time I've been playing, but still can't get myself to hit Alt-R/P/L, even though I find Ctrl uncomfortable to use for anything. I've switched to Alt for equipment, inventory, /heal, etc. For some reason I just haven't been able to do it with the chat functions yet.

Also "/t <r> message" works. <r> is automatically replaced with the name of whoever last sent you a tell.

The <r> tag can be used anywhere you would use <stpc>. So, /trade <r>, /pcmd add <r>, /ma "Cure III" <r>, etc all work (provided that the target is within range).

Ok, so I'm about to venture onto the long trek out to the Dunes for my first party experience. How is loot dropped by monsters sorted amongst party members?

And in combat, when I attack a mob, I hate the view. When I press "H" (I'm using compact keyboard), I get like a free roam view, where I don't have to face the mob, but can still attack and turn away. Is there anyway to make that my default view when I select "Attack" or do I have to always press "H" on my keyboard?

Items dropped are put into the party treasure pool. They stay there for five minutes, and randomly drop to the party members. During that five minutes, party members can also Cast Lots or Pass on individual items, and once one member has Cast Lots on something, whoever gets the highest lot on that item gets it.

Never Cast Lots without asking. That is not how we roll in this game. Everyone casting lots is exactly the same as no one casting lots (both are totally random), so casting lots just means you're making other people do the same if they want a shot at the items, which is an annoyance, especially for players on busy jobs.

Pretty much the only time you cast lots in an XP party is for quest items. Like the subjob quest items. Everyone expects you'll cast lots on those until you have your subjob, and then pass on them. But it still doesn't hurt to ask first.

And in combat, when I attack a mob, I hate the view. I don't remember where it is in the config, but there's a setting to auto lock on target during battle. Turn that off.

One thing to keep in mind is that there has been a recent trend lately to solo to level 20~30. If you find your invite rate in the dunes kinda slow, keep that in mind.
